Jujutsu Kaisen did alright, it looks like? Granblue too.

Oh, and Switch is stable enough, HW-wise. Guess we can expect 40k-ish weeks often during next few months.

More playstation games than switch and still a bigger drop than switch hardware, damn

Good numbers for persona, granblue did aight. Could have been higher if it had better timing

[PS4] Granblue Fantasy: Versus # <FTG> (Cygames) {2020.02.06} (¥6.980) - 86.248 / NEW <80-100%>

I can't believe the action RPG did worse than the fighting game.

Persona 3 Reload sales are quite disappointing.

Granblue is bad too but was undershipped so it might have sold respectable numbers.

PS5 and PS4 SKUs of Yakuza already crossing streams.

Good drop for Shiren given the ample supply issues.

Spider-Man 2 bundle being phased out is making PS5 HW drop. Switch selling well for its age but declines are there.

Wow Granblue did much better than I thought, and apparently it sold out at some point too. Persona 3's numbers were expected as Atlus released recent PR.

[PS4] Granblue Fantasy: Versus # <FTG> (Cygames) {2020.02.06} (¥6.980) - 86.248 / NEW <80-100%>

Relink is seeing big sell outs. Could have done quite a bit more if it had stock.

It appears I overestimated Persona, Granblue and Jujutsu Kaisen, good thing there is no relegation in the prediction league XD.

relink could have sold more shits underprint also from what i heard the new prints doesnt have the mobile code?

The Spider-Man 2 bundle ended, right? So it makes sense that it wouldn't continue with those numbers.
It’s pretty steady, considering the bundles are apparently gone. At least the hardware and software numbers are starting to make sense together.

Big week for PlayStation, but its software sales are still a bit underwhelming. Persona 3 Reload's opening is only a bit more than P3P and P3FES.

I can say I'm bit disappointed with Persona and Granblue. Feels like they could have done more. But still great to see a good level of software sales activity on PS5.

Switch is doing Switch things. Shiren is the star of the week. Let's see if it can show great legs.

The state of Persona in Japan is clear but I do not want my notification box full this time so no comment from me.

The mobile codes for Granblue has been a great strategy in japan imo. Even if it's a great game too.
Good sales for P3R too.

Rip some of my predictions. Shiren over 100k retail. LAD PS4 inching past PS5 version. Not every week Mario Kart drops out of the top 10.

Switch declining is expected but still putting up respectable numbers. I know we said earlier the Spiderman bundles are sold out still didn't think PS5 would dip below switch because of new releases.

Mario 2D comparison

Momotaro Dentetsu comparison

Disappointed with the PS5. Hopefully it can get back above 40k. I was going to say impressive Xbox sales but like the PS5 it's down a lot on this week last year.

Persona sales are very underwhelming, Infinite Wealth did better (which is bizarre). They should have ensured a Switch SKU at launch.

At least it’s performed well globally, but yeah, the Japanese performance is underwhelming.

Granbomb! (just kidding)

It's supply constrained but going by Steam review ratios it's doing pretty well on there too in Japan.

P3R seems just ok or passable (like Spain, they really needed that Switch version), Jujitsu Kaisen not so much though.

Shiren 6 digital is crazy given the 200k figure.

Marios Wonderful Legs. weird seeing +% consider HW is down, but.

As a comparison: NSMBWii had 62k in the same week in year 2010 and 98k the week before. Wonder has 14k now in both weeks. So I would not call this 'wonderful legs' for Mario Wonder. And yes, there are also some digital sales to add for Wonder, but this will not change the pattern significantly, because digital share of Wonder is maybe ~25% at the best. So Wonder is clearly tracking behind NSMBWii in Japan and will even fall more behind it from week to week

It was more a comment about the increase WoW and not a comparison to NSMBwii.

In the grand scheme of things, it is doing extremely well, in comparison to 2D peaks though, you make a fair point, but the markets have changed and so has the context of its release.

Man, Tactica really cratered. I still think a Persona Q Origins Collection would've been a smarter investment, it'd have sold more and cost less.

I mean, we talk about sales explosions for various Nintendo IPs this gen, but a lot of time... That's partially because they changed their genre or weren't on a dead platform, lol.

BotW is the first open world Zelda game.
Pokemon SV is the first open world Pokemon game (and Sword/Shield was more open than prior games)
Mario Odyssey was the first pseudo open 3D Mario since Sunshine and 64 and Sunshine were on unpopular systems
Xenoblade 2 was the first time the franchise had been released worldwide on a non-dead platform
Kirby Forgotten Land is 3D

Obviously this doesn't apply to all the sales successes for the Switch, but Mario Wonder is pretty similar to the NSMB franchise with better graphics and more creativity, it's not a massive genre change or anything and the Wii was extremely popular in 2009 and 2010.

A lot of software for PS5 but hardware drops significantly, I guess we can see now a lot of the last few weeks of hardware sales were the Spiderman bundle getting liquidated out.

Good showing for ReLink + the strong PC sales.

Yeah I think this actually tells us why P3 did poorer than IW, in spite of both hitting the same platforms

Persona has convincingly made moves to build an audience on Switch before, which means a (seemingly not small) portion of the Japanese audience prefers playing these games on Switch, and they’re fine with waiting for that or sitting out on the game if a Switch release is skipped - which seems to be what happened here.

In contrast, RGG’s never really made any indications or moves towards moving the audience to Switch at all (even in the face of market realities) so them skipping Nintendo is par for the course. A new release skipping Nintendo has their entire audience showing up (and even growing).

Ironically RGG’s dumb Switch aversion seems to have helped them have a better debut with IW as a result.

Persona 3 sales are underwhelming. It's also the n-th release of the game, after Fes, Portable and the recent porting on all platforms. However, it's releasing after the franchise has growth a lot thanks to Persona 5. I really feel a Switch version could have helped a bit in selling at least 150k at retail.

Yes these are good explanations. But on the other side, we also have some other IPs sales explosions on Switch, although their new entries did NOT make anything basically new:

Mario Party
Animal Crossing
Luigis Mansion
2D Zelda
2D Metroid

I mean, basically every Nintendo IP broke new records on Switch - 2D Mario is one of the few ones, that will NOT do this. I think your reasons regarding too much similarity to NSMB is reasonable. Nintendo should have changed graphic design and overall presentation a bit more, to make Wonder more unique.

Persona and Grandblue didi ok-ish for PS games in Japan, at retail, but still very tepid numbers.
same imho for Jujutsu Kaisen

Switch already higher than PS5, now that the Spiderman bundles ended?

I never made a prediction worse than the one for this week. Jesus Almighty!

I wonder how much of the userbase in Japan have purchased Granblue and Persona on PC instead of on the PS-consoles.

I'm going to say that 2D games have a pretty hard cap of interested consumers at this point as people view them as less valuable than 3D titles. Outside of Nintendo, all retail 2D games seem to bomb these days (this is not counting fighting games, obviously)

P3R sold 15k units more at launch than SMT3HD. However, keep in mind that these two projects didn't have the same scale nor the same price.

Ok debuts for new titles, interesting to see their legs as they got good reviews.

Next PS blockbusters we have on the road are FFVII Rebirth later this month and DD2/Rise of the Ronin combo by later march.

I think it also helped that they released a new game instead of a remake.
I think the remake factor is not as relevant here. Persona 3 is beloved enough for series fans to show up for it, and the brand has grown massively in a post-P5 world where a remake would have newer fans showing up for it (like an RE remake or even the Pokémon remakes). And that’s actually what’s happened globally. In Japan, it hasn’t, and platform choice has a big role to play there I think.

It's harder to break records when your predecessors (ie NSMB and NSMBWii) were already mega succesfull. It's a much higher barrier to "success" if that is how you gauge it

This is very obviously untrue for the Japanese market

I would say that console numbers for P3R are nothing very impressive so far (at least in Europe). Most of the growth has come from Steam.
