COVID was hitting hard in EU back when FFVIIR has been released: no surprise here imho (even if many users didn't believe this theory, but COVID start/lockdown has REALLY be big in terms of online spending over here in EU)

I gotta ask. At this point, France is among the slowest major markets in terms of digital adoption, right?

I know the digital market is basically dead for books (under 5% of the market, down YoY in 2022), but it's still interesting to see something somewhat similar (though not as extreme) for video games
 
Considering how cheap retail copies can be compared to other main EU markets, it's not surprising that digital is much less appealing in France.
 
I don't think there is anything in that thread that allows us to determine that digital adoption rates are lower in France than elsewhere and by how much.

Oscar has a valuable infography from 2021 but it compares ratios for selected titles only.

There is the Sell yearly report that had some GSD data

Physical software share has been stable since 2020, and 2022 digital software sales share was down compared to peak pandemic years.

You are right that we don't have hard evidence but from my own experience, as living relative close to the French border and having imported a lot of games and even consoles from France.

The retail prices in France are a good bit lower than on average across neighboring countries. I think that retail is highly competitive in France and therefore relatively cheaper.

France is a rather transparent market, but other markets aren't. We don't know about the digital ratios in countries like Germany, Canada, Japan, etc. That's what makes any comparison hard.

Another big factor that impacts digital ratios is that Xbox is weak in all the counties you stated and that's the most digital platform. That's obviously a major factor that makes the US/UK have higher digital ratios.

One thing I would say is that for Nintendo to make a digital only system, digital adoption in Japan and France (easily the 2 most retail heavy major markets) has to go way up as otherwise it wouldn't do well in their 2nd and 3rd biggest markets.

So digital and physical game sales are basically almost 50% each?

    We have few (old) exemples who show that Spain is bellow France for digital ratios.

    all you had to do to see that is look at usa pc game market. boxed afaik basically hasn't existed for a while.

    Not sure why you are making this claim for a game that is ranked 12th on a list. Like technically those are legs, but you can't extrapolate the performance from that low of a position, especially in a year with so few heavy hitters and a weak COD. 7 new games in the top 20 is kind of weak, even with the transition to digital.

    GT7 was not far behind Horizon in 2022 charts. It likely have sold 7 million by now.

    No number yet, my estimate was based on anual 2022 charts position of GT7 and Horizon 8.4 million as of April 2023.

    GT7 also seem to have better legs in Europe compared to Horizon based on monthly PSN charts of 2023.
     
    Gran Turismo 7 has now outsold Horizon II in France.
    Probably same for the whole european region.

    One stipulation for Horizon is that bundles aren't tracked in the software charts for NPD/Circana so, Horizon is actually higher than it is represented. Also keep in mind that differences in position can be in the tens of thousands for ones right next to each other so the NPD gap could be in the hundreds of thousands without considering bundles. It could still be 7 million but, it seems a little less than likely.
     
    looking at GT7 sales I think that FFXVII, funded by Sony as an exclusive PS6 game, will be a Chocobo Driving simulator game.

    GT7 now likely have outsold Horizon II in EU where GSD do track bundles and Japan as well. I doubt difference in USA will make up for more then 1.4 million.

    I can understand being disappointed in that and could be the same reason here. But still fans as usual overreacting to something and review bombing.

    It has a 9.4 user score on Metacritic.
    On Amazon Germany it has 4.1 stars from 19 reviews.
    People giving 1 star because the game doesn't have something the franchise never had before shouldn't be taken serious. Nobody complains because TotK doesn't have coop.
