Chainsaw man 12 collected ~295k after its first four weeks up to the week preceding CSM 13's release, yet CSM 13 will probably end somewhere around ~450k fm or so, a grand total of +40k first month (I'm giving it a degree of frontloading since it released on week 1 of 2023, though could land a bit higher since it should still have some remains of its boost to bump up legs I guess). That is incredibly underwhelming and an extremely low sales upgrade from the anime in spite of the raw amount of new readers gained being quite high. Something like Bisque gained much less than CSM from its anime yet the actual sales gain for new volumes was higher (and I'm not talking about % but straight up raw numbers...), it's quite disappointing really. Won't even catch up to its pre-anime peak at this point.
The size of the boost and the sales of Part 2 volumes are two different things, though linked. Each have their own problems.I also saw on reddit that CSM didn't see the same boost from the anime that other IPs have seen, like JJK and spy x family.
I wonder why is this the case? Does the fact that it's not a typical shonen affects its sales? Was it overhyped abroad while its popularity in Japan is more muted?
Or maybe (my preferred theory so far) it's the fact that it blew up before the anime adaptation, thus most people have read the manga already? Because I don't know any other series where fans actively make you read the manga before finishing the anime, either by recommending it, or by spoiling manga-only content. I also see manga-related memes blowing up on twitter all the time, while the anime seems to have left the popular culture, as good as it was.
Yes it did get a boost pre-anime particularly from the Volume 9 pv and anime trailers. Chainsaw man is a typical battle shonen hit, a non typical one is what i'd call Slam dunk or SpyxFamily or Detective Conan or Touch etc, not Chainsaw man.I also saw on reddit that CSM didn't see the same boost from the anime that other IPs have seen, like JJK and spy x family.

Yeah don't worry, I'm very much aware. Those are my graphs, in fact! I should post the updated version of a bunch of stuff, haven't had much time lately.I also saw on reddit that CSM didn't see the same boost from the anime that other IPs have seen, like JJK and spy x family.

I would say japanese audiences tend to not be the most sequel-friendly (and this goes beyond manga, its a trend that can often be seen in box office as well). I originally thought this would play out more like a Tokyo Ghoul:RE situation, but audiences clearly feel differently (or they just don't like what they've seen of part 2).Oh nice, the world is really small.
You think that Part 2 is too separate from Part 1 and that explains the decline in sales? Given that it has a new protagonist and that Denji is basically a supporting character now maybe audiences are treating it as a spinoff even if its branded like a continuation of the story of CSM.
I disagree. It's just that Fujimoto stories take a while to ramp up. You're not going to get Ch. 70-80ish level of tension and horror in the first chapters of Part 2Chainsaw man part 2 is so boring right now
I think denji not been the main character is a very bad decision imo
Worldwide? But the manga is very old. I find it weird it got 7 million increase in few years. The Silent Service by Kawaguchi Kaiji has reached 32 Million Copies in circulation inclusive of digital

I don't think it is. It's very reminiscent of the early chapters of part 1 which set up pretty much everything for the rest of the series, so we'll probably get the bog moment soon enough. What we have now though is very interesting.Chainsaw man part 2 is so boring right now

ngl, the chainsaw man sales have been a disappointment. It's basically selling 10k a volume for backlog, and the newest volume virtually received no anime boost. And looking over at Shoseki it's going to keep falling, I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't hit 7 million. I understand all the reasons why this came to be, but it doesn't change the fact it's disappointing to me. I see BL falling off a cliff as well. People now know what BL is, people who are interested are buying volumes right now, but it won't have an episode that brings new fans in. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if JJK or OP win it at the end of the year. I'm still thinking that JJK will stop losing fans, and hold ~1.1 M sales per month, and the backlogs will be enough to push it to the top, but it's going to be really close this year.Oricon (Japan) Ranking: Week 3, 2023 (Jan 16 - Jan 22)

I do not see anything particularly odd. CSM was always going to fall big time once the holidays ended without an anime to sustain. BL has solid hold it barely even fall ( less than 2%). I think it will have good holds at least until anime is airing and it will do well after the anime as well imo.I see BL falling off a cliff as well. Damn, at least One Piece's publisher was kind last year, so they will probably release data for One Piece. This is it.
The only additional data we may get will come from leaks, news articles or tweets from publishers themselves.
