Chainsaw man 12 collected ~295k after its first four weeks up to the week preceding CSM 13's release, yet CSM 13 will probably end somewhere around ~450k fm or so, a grand total of +40k first month (I'm giving it a degree of frontloading since it released on week 1 of 2023, though could land a bit higher since it should still have some remains of its boost to bump up legs I guess). That is incredibly underwhelming and an extremely low sales upgrade from the anime in spite of the raw amount of new readers gained being quite high. Something like Bisque gained much less than CSM from its anime yet the actual sales gain for new volumes was higher (and I'm not talking about % but straight up raw numbers...), it's quite disappointing really. Won't even catch up to its pre-anime peak at this point.

I also saw on reddit that CSM didn't see the same boost from the anime that other IPs have seen, like JJK and spy x family.

7vxxh89v9tca1.png

I wonder why is this the case? Does the fact that it's not a typical shonen affects its sales? Was it overhyped abroad while its popularity in Japan is more muted?

Or maybe (my preferred theory so far) it's the fact that it blew up before the anime adaptation, thus most people have read the manga already? Because I don't know any other series where fans actively make you read the manga before finishing the anime, either by recommending it, or by spoiling manga-only content. I also see manga-related memes blowing up on twitter all the time, while the anime seems to have left the popular culture, as good as it was.

The size of the boost and the sales of Part 2 volumes are two different things, though linked. Each have their own problems.

The anime boost is good, but the last 4 huge boosts we've gotten have skewed people's perception of what an anime boost can be. (I'm talking about Demon Slayer, JJK, Tokyo Revengers and Spy x Family, to a lesser extent)

Prior to Demon Slayer, the top 2 anime boosts of the Oricon era were Attack on Titan and Seven Deadly Sins. In terms of peak weekly sales for volume 1, AoT reached 72k and SDS 49k. These two were the only non-One Piece series to reach 10M units sold in a single year.

All the other famous good anime boosts peaked way lower, on a level similar to Chainsaw Man (35k) :
-Blue Exorcist: 40k
-Haikyu!!: 28k
-Magi: 29k
-One-Punch Man: 30k
-Tokyo Ghoul: 26k
etc.

And if we consider total yearly sales, Chainsaw Man is likely gonna have a year on par with the best of these.

The situation is actually very, very similar to Assassination Classroom (30k peak weekly sales for v1 during the anime) : a manga that was already huge and which didn't get a boost that impressive following its anime.
(In fact, it's so similar that the last time AC #1 charted, it reached 1.435M units sold, exactly the number CSM #1 is at right now, and it might not chart again.
Though CSM's boost is better than AC's because the series started from slightly lower.)
This is a situation that me and a lot of people thought would happen to Spy x Family. Except it didn't and surpassed expectations.
So yes, how big CSM was before the anime was definitely a reason for its relatively small anime boost.

Also, you have to consider that the JJK, Tokyo Revengers and SxF boosts (to a lesser extent for SxF's) were this big because of left-overs from the Demon Slayer boom. And that couldn't last forever.

As for the Part 2 volumes, that's a different issue. Clearly, a lot of people did not make the jump from Part 1 to Part 2. And a bigger anime boost wouldn't have changed that. There are just ~300k people that are not interested in a new CSM story with a new cast. Maybe they thought Part 1's conclusion was enough and a new part wasn't needed. The long break surely didn't help either.
But I insist, this drop for Part 2 volumes sales can't be explained by the size of the anime boost.

And, just so you know, you are replying to the person that made these graphs lol

Yes it did get a boost pre-anime particularly from the Volume 9 pv and anime trailers. Chainsaw man is a typical battle shonen hit, a non typical one is what i'd call Slam dunk or SpyxFamily or Detective Conan or Touch etc, not Chainsaw man.

Social media response doesn't necessarily correlate to actual sales or popularity. There's many examples of this happening in every industry. (Sony/Nintendo, Avatar 2 etc etc) I'd say a better metric is Jump+ viewership but even it doesn't correlate to manga volume sales.

2022 Paper + Electronic Publishing Market to be 1.63305 trillion yen, down 2.6% YoY, but up 5.7% from 2019 before Corona - according to the Publishing Science Institute.

Yeah don't worry, I'm very much aware. Those are my graphs, in fact! :p I should post the updated version of a bunch of stuff, haven't had much time lately.

Rouk has pretty much said it all. CSM's boost is very strong as far as backlog is concerned. The translation to part 2 has been very lackluster though, not only from the ending of part1 to volume 12, but from volume 12 to 13 as well, and suggests interest in part 2 is not very high from atleast a good chunk of its readership to me. Even if the backlog boost was as big as JJK's, CSM was never going to match it FM when a lot of people just aren't making the jump to part2 (atleast it - hopefully - won't follow through JJK's disastrous decline, though...).

The boost in the west has been uneven. It's set to break the record for best selling single volume and quite possibly new release in a year (which kny was going to break otherwise) in the US, but it's been pretty disappointing in France. Italy and Germany seem strong as far as I can tell.

Oh nice, the world is really small.

You think that Part 2 is too separate from Part 1 and that explains the decline in sales? Given that it has a new protagonist and that Denji is basically a supporting character now maybe audiences are treating it as a spinoff even if its branded like a continuation of the story of CSM.

I would say japanese audiences tend to not be the most sequel-friendly (and this goes beyond manga, its a trend that can often be seen in box office as well). I originally thought this would play out more like a Tokyo Ghoul:RE situation, but audiences clearly feel differently (or they just don't like what they've seen of part 2).

Chainsaw man part 2 is so boring right now
I think denji not been the main character is a very bad decision imo
I disagree. It's just that Fujimoto stories take a while to ramp up. You're not going to get Ch. 70-80ish level of tension and horror in the first chapters of Part 2

If it's not specified, it is almost certain to be Japan only and correct me if I'm wrong but the previous circulation figure for this series was physical only

I don't think it is. It's very reminiscent of the early chapters of part 1 which set up pretty much everything for the rest of the series, so we'll probably get the bog moment soon enough. What we have now though is very interesting.

ngl, the chainsaw man sales have been a disappointment. It's basically selling 10k a volume for backlog, and the newest volume virtually received no anime boost. And looking over at Shoseki it's going to keep falling, I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't hit 7 million. I understand all the reasons why this came to be, but it doesn't change the fact it's disappointing to me. I see BL falling off a cliff as well. People now know what BL is, people who are interested are buying volumes right now, but it won't have an episode that brings new fans in. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if JJK or OP win it at the end of the year. I'm still thinking that JJK will stop losing fans, and hold ~1.1 M sales per month, and the backlogs will be enough to push it to the top, but it's going to be really close this year.

I do not see anything particularly odd. CSM was always going to fall big time once the holidays ended without an anime to sustain. Blue Lock had a fairly solid hold.

BL has solid hold it barely even fall ( less than 2%). I think it will have good holds at least until anime is airing and it will do well after the anime as well imo.

Week 2, 2023 (Jan 9 - Jan 15)
It feels like chart of one piece and Spy x Family. Lol

Unfortunate BD sales for CSM and explains why manga sales didn't explode like other series. I do wonder if the comments from the director were a major influence (considering the petition that came out of it) or japanese audiences just didn't like the anime very much.

On the other hand, #BOCCHISWEEP

Is not the yearly GFK ranking from 2022 Dec 27 to 2022 Dec 25 ?
It's not. I'm as confused as you as to why. LivresHebdo shares the ranking for 2 separate periods of time for some reason.

But I'm confident in both dates (these ones and the ones from last month) : The ranking is different from what I posted last month.
Also, I assume you don't have the full LivresHebdo mag, only what was shared on twitter, but they did give the exact dates (the ones I wrote) at the beginning of their article. So no mistakes possible. The One Piece #103 numbers also confirm this, both for this ranking and the one I posted last month.

Any idea how many copies One Piece, Spy x Family, Naruto, and Demon Slayer sold this year in France? From the looks of it One Piece is all +%, so I would assume it beat last years record.

We don't know (yet) sadly.
However, Spy x Family is fairly easy to estimate. It's only missing the limited edition for v8 and all of v10. So its sales should be in the 1.65-1.7M range.

And yes, One Piece has almost certainly beaten last year's record.
