Amazon.com Sales Tracker (US and International Markets)

You've missed a last part : "XS will become a holiday console". That average 4.3 million was vast majority from holidays. That's not good. Sales of X1 cratered throughout the first 10 months every year in US. Even Xbox said before that holiday sales counts and where it matters.

That means XS sold in 9 million more units since July 2023.Not a single chance. Not even shipped.
XB becoming a holiday product is precisely why XB has likely never turned any real profit on XB hardware as the holiday subsidies can represent >60% of units sold in a year. From a P&L perspective that’s bad, but from a “growing the install base” perspective, they’re still achieving good unit numbers, regardless of when those units are sold. If they can maintain 4-4.5m/year units in the US , they will keep pace with the PS5, which is probably the most important thing. It maintains 3rd party support and stops PS from becoming too dominant in a key market.

Maybe in US, but outside of it, it doesn't. If XB is just a platform to buy during holidays in US, which is bad in US, imagine what is the situation then outside of US where XB sales are bad even during the holiday period.

3rd party devs knows that US isn't the world and knows how bad Xbox is doing outside of US.

I agree, situation outside US is dire and will likely be worse than XBO. If MS can salvage US market and maintain 4m/year sales, they can at least make sure they maintain some market share from XBO gen. The wild card is GP. If full game sales are in decline on XBS due to a large percentage of users being GP members, the 3p support will deteriorate for XB, especially as MS moves away from paying exorbitant amounts for 3p games on GP due to the strength of their 30 1p studios.

Right now, assuming Dec is ~flat, XBS is heading to 3.7M. This is with a year that had Starfield, a new model and the Dec $100 price cut.
Whether MSFT holds the price cut or not is a big question.

$100 off would another $1B loss on their books, which would singlehandedly wipe a majority of ATVI profits. It may be a good test to see if MSFT is fundamentally tied to consoles and needs consoles to perform to stay in the business, to see how big of a loss they are willing to take for XBS.

Right now, 90% of GP, subs and 3rd P TRX are tied to Xbox. As Xbox's base shrinks, especially in US/UK, which may be 20-30% this gen, all those segments shrink accordingly, which is why Phil Spencer says it is a necessity for MSFT to have an equivalent sub count/store outside of Xbox.

Should be weird if, after 3 years in the market, Microsoft couldn't cut any Series X costs.

Should be weird if, after 3 years in the market, Microsoft couldn't cut any Series X costs.

Any notable efficiency gain would be seen in the product. We've already seen two cost efficiencies with the PS5:
  • 6nm chip
  • PS5 slim, with smaller heat sink, parts and different fan
Afaik the XBS is still the same spec as 2020. XBS chip is larger and its motherboard is split in two, causing different challenges.

Here's how I'd estimate everything beyond their minimum.

NSW: 179,000
PS5: 131,000
XBS: 72,000

HOWEVER, those are only the numbers for December 1 - December 30. November 26 - November 30 is going to account for a large chunk of sales for December thanks to Cyber Monday, and in the quoted post, nearly everything fell in the last 5 days. So, the following are what I estimate each console to be at when accounting for those 5 days. This and June are the only 5 week month (others being March and September) that I've accounted for the extra 5 days (June because we had weekly sales 😭 ). You can see in the tables below that those months in particular typically have lower market shares than the other months. These "missing" 5 days would be why.

NSW: 233,000
PS5: 163,000
XBS: 83,000

Looks like Microsoft can't make many Series X anyway. Maybe they'll do some promotions in 2024.

Superb results for Super Mario RPG and Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach.

On the flipside, I wish Hogwarts Legacy would be a tad higher.

i never thought about fnaf til i noticed my nieces 7 and 9.

it's so stupid but they love it, or at least did for minute.

they would veg out watching endless looping yt's of different fnaf screams. i get it now, it's scary but not really scary aka for kids.

I am actually curious what is the relationship between retailers and stock movement there?

Not sure what you are asking. But retailers make orders for millions of consoles during the holiday season. XBS sold terribly in November which would have left retailers with tons of unsold stock in early 2024. By doing the sale hopefully MS helped moved that stock which will help retailers by not having to store it and help MS by expanding the user base and keeping retailers happy and continuing to order Xboxes.

I dont know either. Like if Wal Mart orders a bunch of xsx at normal wholesale (probably on the order of $480, consoles are not priced much above wholesale), discounts the Xbox to 349 from nominal 499 because their ordered stock isnt selling quickly enough the holiday season, are they taking the hit or do they get reembursed in some way?

A retailer as large as Walmart get reimbursed otherwise they would send the units back to Xbox.

The question is why it is a problem for retailers to keep the stock if it is not sold. They can still sell it later no? They just don't need to order more until the current one is sold.

Retail space is not infinite. If you have a store you want products to sell to be able to earn money.

warehouse (distribution)/backroom (retail) space for one.

nobody likes to keep a lot of inventory in todays just in time shipping era, also. probably financial aspects to it.

i'm not an expert though, just a couple things.

btw i was at a wal mart electronics section yesterday. i noticed they had a couple 449 ps5 DE behind the glass, the only ps5 hardware i noticed. that was a bit notable.

Another Code: Recollection past month numbers 15 days before release:
US: 500+
Japan: 500+
Spain: 500+
France: 300+
UK: 100+
Hopefully Nintendo has very realistic sales expectations for this because it is almost certain to one of the smallest 1st party Switch launches. Glad the game still exists either way.

Note that the Deluxe edition with early access to the game is digital only (excluding Japan?) and the game will be available subscribing Ubisoft+

And there's Skull and Bones...

Skull and Bones PS5: 300+
Skull and Bones Xbox: 100+

It has....... not been a good stretch from Ubisoft financially other than AC Mirage.

Skull and Bones and The Division Heartland (the beta test reception was incredibly bad) look extremely likely to fail despite so many years in development and those will be two big blows.

Ubisoft has three VERY big mobile titles releasing soon-ish that are critical for the company in Assassin's Creed, The Division, and Rainbow Six. AC Red is also the return of yearly AC so that's another big thing to monitor. But it has been rough for Ubisoft since Fall of 2022.

Germany and France seem to be running out of stock for Prince of Persia, sales doubled or more in all other territories compared to last week thanks to great Reviews/proximity to launch.

All PS5 (disc/digital) models are out stock at Amazon US.
On the flip side, Amazon only just started selling the Series X again today through themselves. It was only being sold by 3rd parties like antonline and other for the past two weeks.

They're price matching the GameStop $469 price.

The only real surprise to me is the low pre-sale figures for Tekken 8. T7 sold 10M+ as of Dec 2022 so I figured there would be much stronger hype for its sequel. There are still 2 weeks left until launch so preorders have room to ramp up.

Everything else is unsurprising: Rebirth, P3R, and Like a Dragon are doing well, Suicide Squad and Skull & Bones are expected to flop, Granblue and Dragon's Dogma are very niche, Peach and Ronin will get big boosts when the next Nintendo Direct/State of Play airs.

I would guess a lot of those people bought Tekken 7 at sharp discounts so they're probably not jumping on the next one until it gets discounts too.

Series X is charting around 50th place on Amazon.com, despite being discounted to $445.
Before the holidays Series X used to chart 20-30th place at $499.

It's similar at Best Buy where Series X used to be No. 20, now it's No. 70 at the overall bestseller list.

I think it's save to say Series X needs the $399 price point now to sell decently

Prince of Persia is back in stock in Germany just in time for launch, France is still missing Switch and Xbox versions.
