You have all the Tales games in the world to remaster and that is what you pick? :(

Each to their own, Berseria isn't the worst entry but it's certainly not deserving of a remaster yet imo, doubly so given that it's tied to Zestiria which is easily the worst Tales game I've played.

It's high time we got a Xillia 1-2 remaster imo, but given the 10 year anniversary has passed with nothing, I kinda doubt it at this point.
Be me and cry that 2D Tales will never get a modern remake or even a port. I want Eternia personally.

I didn't know that there was a difference in the significance of an outsourced port depending on country of origin.
If a a western studio outsources a port, no comment.
But if a Japanese studio outsources a port, it doesn't mean anything.
Good to keep in mind.

All I know is that this is yet another case of SE continuing to look foolish for not porting over the PS2 KH games natively to Switch.

People are freaking out about Ace Combat, but refuse to acknowledge that Harada still owes Nintendo for putting Tekken in Smash Bros.

Don't act surprised when Tekken shows up just like it did on 3DS and Wii U.
Harada will point to his shirt towards Nintendo: don't ask him for shit

Bamco doesn't owe Nintendo anything. especially since Bamco is being paid for their services

Bandai Namco were payed to develop the game, but Nintendo isn't obligated to include any of their characters or franchises in Smash.

Last time I checked Nintendo doesn't do free advertising for games on other systems and it would go against the way they view Smash Bros. as a tool to introduce characters and series to their audience.

Is there anyone seriously believing that Nintendo had to take special permission from Harada to use Tekken in Smash.

I'm afraid they don't exactly have a good track record on in that regard
Snake was added around MGS4(and includes some MGS4 stuff!)
Ryu was added around Street Fighter V
Cloud was added around the FF VII Remake announcement
Joker was around the Persona 5 Royal announcement

1 million.

Nice! Well deserved Psaro and DQM sweep. Good to see the series back on track.
This is a false equivalence though, since there is art in photography, effort put in the compositions and more. AI "art" is not only something made with a promp given to it without thought or imagination or even a vision, but also relies on copying other artists, because they were trained using other people's art without their permission. It might all be in a politically grey area for now, but it's certainly not morally gray. That's why people don't like AI images and can't be compared to photography.
3 different moderators have already asked and warned for the AI discussion to stop. Please let's just comply to avoid anything.

It's much more probable that Tekken wad added to Smash as a thank you for the Bamco development team that had been working on Smash for 10+ years at that point.

Tekken 8 can or can not come to Switch 2. But Tekken on Smash doesn't mean anything.
I remember how many people were pissed they got a Persona and not an SMT character, lol. Good that some Persona games are now on Switch though.
I was one of them! Felt a slap in the face for the Atlus rep to be Persona rather than SMT, which is a series that had been supporting Nintendo for 10+ years. I get it that it was meant to be a push from Nintendo towards Persona on Switch and because Persona was a more popular series. But I still don't agree with them passing over SMT.

A big lack of new games in this year's Top 30 only nine from this year make the Top 30,
My guess is that most Switch owners have other platforms and a lot of mon-Nintendo titles are on there due to a combination of their popularity and aggressive in some cases eShop discounts.
Korea seems to be mainly paying full price for Nintendo & some hit indies - while for other titles the audience seems to waiting for anything else to drop in price before purchasing digitally. We see this trend with a lot of titles that likely had sales this year seeing higher placement in the charts while others that didn't chart in 2022 now are charting.

Nintendo & Pokemon Co - 15
Tears of the Kingdom no doubt had a big year in South Korea, probably an explosive start but also very impressive legs for a Single Player game, its launch also boosted Breath of the Wild there, as likely people picked up both games especially new Switch owners. Very recently it was still in the physical Top 5 in Korea which hasn't happened in Japan.
Not suprised to see New Horizon in the Top 3 - I think its the best selling Switch title in South Korea. Wonder being below New Horizon does mean that digitally at least it was a huge Q4, but with Wonder I expect digital to be making a smaller percentage of overall sales.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is up nine positions YoY, which I think hints that hardware might be flat ior even up n South Korea and MK8D is aided from the lack of new games
Very good holds or even some gains by other Evergreens like Switch Sports only dropping a few positions, Clubhouse actually gaining a few spots, Superstars basically holding to the same place.
Splatoon 3 was one that didn't have such a good hold in South Korea dropping from #3 to #19 on the digital chart, thats a bigger drop than Violet which went from #2 to #12 which is a much softer drop I attribute to the expansion releasing this year. Splatoon 3's expansion will need to change things as it seems that the quarterly updates arent enough.
Last thing to note is that the Mario Movie effect is also observed in South Korea with Odyssey and NSMBUD showing up.

Western non-indie - 5
Japan non-indie - 3
Western indie - 3
South Korea non-indie - 2
Japan indie - 1
This year bigger publishers have a small advantage over indies in the Top 30, last year it was the opposite.

Aladdin X - 1
Suika is verified to be a huge hit in Asia, being the number 1 game digitally on the eShop is a huge result. I think maybe consuming similar social media channels and being in close proximity to each other its not surprising but also great to witness. It's position tells me that at least a quarter million people in Korea bought it on the Switch and that total could be much much higher(1M+)
For a startup selling a totally unrelated consumer electronics gotta wonder how Aladdin X seizes on this success and invests their winnings.

Team 17 - 1
Overcooked is preferred over its sequel in South Korea, obviously much like in Japan its likely getting 80% discounts - still to be ahead of MK8D is a great result for such an old game. This is also the number #1 Western game in the chart at 6th position, so a great result for an indie studio.

Nexon - 1
Good debut for Dave the Diver. The top South Korean game on the Switch Top 30. Nexon hasn't focused on the Switch but their first hit on the platform fits right into the ecosystem. I wonder if we would see a more serious investment in the coming years.

Blizzard - 1
Diablo II manages to gain a few spots at #10 in Korea again not terribly suprising considering many buyers are likely not kids but adults with a lot of nostalgia from their time playing the game on PC.

Ubisoft - 1
Just outside of the Top 10 we find Just Dance which climbs a bunch of positions compared to last year likely aided by big eshop discounts.

Capcom - 2
Ace Attorney Trilogy climbed in a big way YoY, likely the impact of big eshop discounts. While Rise is holding which means that there is still ways for Capcom to further discount it in coming years as I'm guessing it didn't go above 60% in 2023. This is the first Japanese Third Party in the list and catalog sales are what is driving their position in the market.

Bandai Namco - 1
One Piece Warriors 4 much like in Japan is having good legs in South Korea at #16, again we are talking about big discounts to maintain its position.

Take Two - 1
Similar case to Diablo II, PC audience wanting Civilization on the go and discounts doing the work here with the game climbing up 9 spots YoY.

Electronic Arts - 2
It Takes Two didn't make the Top 30 in its debut year, so must have taken some time for it to gain popularity and also be discounted to all of the sudden find itself in 18th place. While EA Sports FC 24's position is okay for the first year considering usually last year's FIFA is in the chart due to discounts and the games don't appear in the Top 30 during their launches.

Sega - 1
Similar case to Take Two where Persona didn't make it in its launch year but via discounts now charts at #22.

Klei Entertainment - 1
Great result for the Canadian indie to have a game in the Top 30 in Korea, means that the game did find some audience in its second year to there to besides Kirby and EA Sports. Obviously eshop discounts also played a part.

Poncle - 1
Vampire Survivors hasn't done as well in Asia as the rest of the World, however its likely as with most titles in this list to sell more copies at discounted price next year. In Japan the game didn't make the Top 30 so relatively in terms of placing it performed better in South Korea.

MLB Advanced Media - 1
MLB making the top 30 and being only the second sports game to do so is definitely a decent result.

Daewon Media - 1
Daewon Media published the only other South Korean title on the Top 30 Genseisuikoden Plus again one for those nostalgic.

Did we forget how on a official Nintendo video for Banjo & Kazooie Sakurai told viewers that the game can be played on an Xbox One? Nintendo cares more about having a good relationship with third parties than only advertising the games on their platforms.

To be honest, that was just Sakurai. He does not really care and has a lot of freedom. Nintendo would not mention the Xbox One in one of their videos.

1M shipment WW is less than what I was expecting based on the game's placement on the JP eShop's ranking for the year.
Yeah, this most likely means that rest of the world is doing very low numbers, which was kind of expected but still disappointing, but at least doing very very well in Japan.

Cool stuff about Ace Combat, those comparison videos looked really good actually.

The main purpose of Smash characters is to sell Smash and its DLC, the rest has always been fanfiction.
All the Smash-talk made me think: Would you guys be interested in a vote-thread where the question is: "Which of these 3rd-party characters has the most sales-potential for an appearance in Smash Bros?".

Basically not asking for "who do you want the most", but who is most likely from Nintendo's pov.

Since a vote can only have 10 options, I think, I'd gather recommendations here or via pm and then discuss with 2-3 other IB-users via pm which 10 to pick for the vote-thread (pm me if you want to be part of that). Would be interesting imo to try predict future Smash-characters based on sales potential. I haven't seen this being done ever before ^^

3rd-party characters I gathered myself so far:
  • Son-Goku
  • Tales of-hero (Lloyd?)
  • Hatsune Miku
  • Jill Valentine
  • Leon S. Kennedy
  • Chris Redfield
  • MonHun-hunter
  • Rayman
  • Amaterasu
  • Conker
  • Chun-Li
  • Dante
  • Doom Guy
  • Jack Frost or a SMT-hero
Send me your 3rd-party recommendations per PM, if enough users participate, I'll look into making a thread. Do not reply to this posting in here, we don't want another thread derail!

Not launch aligned cause PS4 was launched in February whereas PS5 was launched in November but launch year aligned (CY) ...

Let's play a game.
How high PS5 digital ratio must be in Japan so that PS5 total software sales (physical+digital) match just the physical software sales of previous consoles during the first 3 calendar years?

Total physical software sales in the first 3 calendar years, in parenthesis PS5 digital ratio to match a past console physical software sales (source: source: Media Create Top 1000 for the period 2009-2022; Media Create Top 500 for the period 2006-2008):

PS5: 2.370.767

WIU: 5.565.761 (PS5 digital ratio "mandatory to match": 57.4%)
PSV: 5.931.134 (PS5 digital ratio "mandatory to match": 60.0%)
PS3: 7.828.937 (PS5 digital ratio "mandatory to match": 69.7%)
PS4: 16.185.598 (PS5 digital ratio "mandatory to match": 85.3%)
WII: 26.488.620 (PS5 digital ratio "mandatory to match": 91.0%)
NSW: 37.628.996 (PS5 digital ratio "mandatory to match": 93.7%)
3DS: 47.274.721 (PS5 digital ratio "mandatory to match": 95.0%)

Note: CY1 is special because consoles have different launch date and some console listed had much lower digital software sales compared to nowadays or even non-existant.
Is this data you compiled and put together or is there a direct source to the total sales of these platforms on mediacreate?

The only thing I got by reading the AC7 Switch port related posts is that nothing means anything.

Don’t read into any of it one way or the other. These kinds of announcements are apparently completely neutral. Whether or not these late ports occur- same result.

I'm not Celine but it says there on the graph that all the data is from Media Create yearly top 1000 (or top 500 for 2006-2008).

An I think it shows pretty well what I was saying, PS3 had a bit of a resurgence in its late years, that momentum carried on to the PS4 along with it receiving a lot of games and spinoffs that previously were being made for the DS or PSP (and even Wii like MH3) but it still lost all that momentum and that is being carried to PS5.

1 million.

Squeenix finally bounced back after several middling DQ games on Switch.
All is decent one that i would love seeing show up on Switch
I wouldn't mind Tales of the Abyss.

Oh, and GC version of Tales of Symphonia :p
A big lack of new games in this year's Top 30 only nine from this year make the Top 30,
I think we have sales to blame for that. Just Dance 2023 for example charted super high in first half chart (#2!).

1M shipment WW is less than what I was expecting based on the game's placement on the JP eShop's ranking for the year.

One-million is about what I expected, this IP is just not that notable outside of Japan and without extensive marketing (which this game did not receive), I'd peg OoJ sales at 100-200k maximum on the road to a million. Japan will do the heavy lifting in sales for this game.

Oh im not challenging the information or anything, just wanted to know if I wanted to find this source myself where would I look? Or is this information they put together with the data from Mediacreate.

I remember how many people were pissed they got a Persona and not an SMT character, lol. Good that some Persona games are now on Switch though.
That was me. And I'm still mad! Mainline SMT is a franchise that's been (almost) always tied to Nintendo since their beginnings but got nothing, not even a single spirit. Years of me waiting fro Jack Frost to be part of the game just to instead get the protagonist of a game that wasn't even on the console at the time.

Sakurai is a very weird anomaly in the industry, for some reason he has a huge larger than life rockstar status where everyone falls all over themselves to work with him. Hell even Disney was willing to play ball. It's wild.

To be honest, that was just Sakurai. He does not really care and has a lot of freedom. Nintendo would not mention the Xbox One in one of their videos.
Nintendo brought up Microsoft as their good friends on a Direct where Ori was announced. And what exactly would stop Nintendo from removing that Xbox section in their video? Sakurai is still just a freelancer at the end of the day, he even admitted to asking Nintendo for permission to show behind-the-scene stuff for Smash on his own personal channel.

I guess 90%+ of that shipment sold in Japan. West almost never cared about Dragon Quest spin-offs.
I am not certain how I must interprete that. The game charted in the eShop top 30 the world over during its launch.

Does that mean that it took a somewhat low amount of copies to chart in the December rankings in the US/JP/EU/RotW? It would be a disappointing realization.

It's because he's a genius game designer who understands it better than by far most people.
The Smash Bros. games have an impeccable level of polish and quality of life better than most games out there. The videos he makes on his channel show different things that highlight why his games ooze quality throughout without even doing anything revolutionary.

Regarding Sora in Smash afaik it was Nomura who needed persuasion to agree to it, Disney didn't mind. They didn't really work with him directly anyways.

Wouldn't be much of a realization to me personally. I remember Disney Dreamlight Valley reaching 1M players while being #1 on the eshop in like every country from day one. And it's multiplat too.

They need to stop fucking around and port Ace Combat 6 too.

1 million.

A much needed win for Enix and their HD games efforts. Shows the importance of worldwide launches and digital sales. I also would not be surprised if DQM3 has 1/10th the budget of FFXVI while notching up 1/3rd the revenue. They need to start budgeting these projects appropriately and not rely on nostalgia goggles to gauge potential. Hopefully FF17 can take a page from RE7 and go back to basics with a "essence of Final Fantasy" type release.

Next Dragon quest win is annouce the date of the remake, hopefully summer or winter 2024.

Top 30? Who cares lol, that's so far down especially for what is the game's short lived peak.

It was at #9 in the Europe top 15 for December.
These European eShop charts that fiter out everything not being full price mean nothing for sales.

If vouchers and discounts were included it's doubtful it would make it even into top 30.

I think that's a bit ironic considering DQM3 is based on a 30 year old game and assumes you have extensive knowledge of that game's plot.

WW shipment and digital sales.

It's pretty simple and straightforward, the sentence does begin by 全 世界 (zen sekai) which does mean worldwide, easy task for Google Lens to handle there, it does mention shipment and download afterwards.

If it reached that milestone recently it does mean Japan only is probably a bit far for now as it had to move some units in others markets.

Thank you both for the full on clarification; while it may've been an easy task for Google Lens, I've had enough episodes of Google Translate butchering Japanese-to-English translations in the past that made me more hesitant to fully rely on its results :p

For further context this is the main image on the Japanese Square Enix site right now

Definitely not the way I was expecting the game to get the million-seller announcement. Hopefully we also get a more traditional tweet / press release, hoping that they would also provide the exact day when the game managed to cross the million.

It definitely didn't take a small amount of downloads to chart as high as DQM3 did in the Japanese eShop ranking and especially to chart that high in the 2023 Japanese eShop Top 30. On that matter, here's Chris1964's formatting of the Top 30 with estimates for some of the games that appeared in there

These are the final estimates, Engage went up from the original 200k+. Super Mario Bros. Wonder is the game that could increase 50k+ at the missing 10 days since it lacks the last 2 holiday weekends and is the top selling eShop game after Suika.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's could be revised depending on the sell-in numbers that will be shared with the Q3 FY3/2024 earnings release, but DQM3 should pretty easily be in the 300k range anyway.

Also, as Chris1964 just said, the monthly European Top 15s released by Nintendo unfortunately provide an incomplete picture since purchases at discounted prices and via vouchers are not included.

In any case, while it wouldn't be impossible that the game didn't just cross the million of sales worldwide but went very slightly above the threshold for the period (say, 1.100.000 units rather than straight 1.000.000 units), this is one title with a large share of purchases coming from Japan nonetheless.

Western studio are used to launch a game with some SKU outsourced to other devs.

For JP publishers this doesnt happen very happen and outsourcing is more often used for late ports rather than simultaneous releases.

So in this case, it doesn't make a Switch release for AC8 any likelier, the interpretation would have been different if it was a Western pub (see WB with Mortal Kombat for instance).

All I know is that this is yet another case of SE continuing to look foolish for not porting over the PS2 KH games natively to Switch.

KH isn't straightforward due to heavy use of Disney characters. I am sure it's one of many projects that are being evaluated with Switch 2 on the horizon.

I mean DQM3 selling its bulk on Japan is not going to be surprising. But i think there is chance that the share is around 75-80 Japan and the rest of the world.

The game is decently well received after all.

Heard really great things about this game. Finger crossed we can get physical as well. And i will see how this game will kick my butt hard haha

Suika Game update:

1) Switch: 5.9 million downloads worldwide
2) iOS: 750 000 downloads worldwide
3) Total: over 6 million downloads (technically 6.650.000, but the article specifically mentions "over 6m" for some reason)
