Media Create Sales: Week 52, 2023 (Dec 25 - Dec 31)

Big rises for the week as expected. Switch numbers are good, is it its last 100k+ week I wonder ?

Big attach-rate for the Spider-Man 2 bundle, there should be a mainstay in January as stock clears out.

DQM3 is a shame, expected more for Week 1. We need a PR soon, Square!

Even if PS5 had an increase in sales over the previous week, 41k in this week makes me even more pessimistic for how PS5 is gonna sell this year than I was before.

Good Switch HW numbers. I agree to @Lelouch0612 : Most probably the last 100k+-week for Switch in Japan

So if Famitsu is alright sharing more than one report in a given week, why do they feel the need to combine holiday weeks again?...
Maybe someone felt motivated today. I wouldn't expect this to happen again.

PS5 hitting only 40k on Week 1 is telling for the year to come.
It feels like PS5 is going to land in the 40k range every single week, weeks 48, 49, 50, 51, 52 were all in the 40k range. If it wasn't for the new PS5 model those weeks between 40 and 49 might have also landed in the 40k range. Of course it'll see a boost when major titles like FF7R2 come out.

Those weeks were leading up to the holidays though, where spending is higher. It is not crazy to think that it could drop below that in the coming weeks.

This is a high spend period, I think the price increase has hit hard and we're seeing it with the lack of the more usual "PS bump" on NY as kids can spend money in their own ways (or at least that's how it used to be, and this period used to favor Sony consoles).

If we're hitting 40k in the holiday, we're looking at 20k in the off-seasons or lower. The price hike, I think, has had a major impact both domestically and import wise.

Very nice numbers across the board, last ones before the week 2 nosedive.

Media Create Sales: Week 52, 2023 (Dec 25 - Dec 31)
@Chris1964 shouldn't the Last YTD column match the Last Year one since we're in Week 1? Is this a byproduct of last year's shifted Famitsu numbering?

Give it 3 weeks and we are gonna have Switch in the 35k and PS5 in the 15k.
Not sure whether Switch will go that low that soon. Last year we were thinking it would reach 50k in no time but it didn't. Year after year we've seen Switch to be really stable, not rising as high during holidays as previous handhelds, but maintaining a very healthy baseline throughout the year. Now, this holidays have been comparatively weak for the system, so you might be right, but I'm expecting it to hold a bit better than that, particularly if exports kick in just like last year as soon as holiday deals are over.

12 3DS
I think 3ds story has exhausted
I thought they would finally stop tracking it this year, but nope! Maybe in 3 months at the end of the FY? Have they ever done that before?

Surprise drop but welcomed one.

Switch hitting another 100k lol. The momentum neva stopp

No, aligned is 52 weeks before and is the logical since the same periods are compared with 1 day difference.

It is interesting to look at evergreens and how they are behaving YoY:
  • Smash is up YoY, Animal Crossing massively so
  • Minecraft is down YoY
  • Mario Kart 8 DX is probably up YoY, but we need the whole top 30 to know how much its second SKU has sold.
MK8DX resurgence is explainable (Smash too to an extent) given the new content, but it is interesting to see AC doing so well.

Oh, I see, that's interesting. I'm just curious: do you change it to 53 at the end of leap years, or how do you deal with that?
There's nothing to change, for Famitsu week 2 2023 is compared to week 1 2024 and week 53 2023 will be compared to week 52 2024.

Why is Smash being YoY up explainable? It did not receive new content inbetween afaik?

This year has 52 weeks. Leap years don't have anything to do with it.

While I'll probably never play it, it somehow makes me happy that the second Momotarou-game is able to repeat the first one's success (to some degree, a million is guaranteed). We need more of these surprise successes, especially from 3rd-parties.

@Vena
You're really starting to split hairs here and really showing a strange bias in the whole VR discussion.

Scope isn't the only thing that defined budget. VR by its nature has very different but difficult design elements to account for in its development. Cost goes into more than graphics and size in this case.
You'll have to elaborate on this, because budget is budget. VR development is different from traditional game development, agree, hence why VR is so awesome, it's not just tacked on controls for regular games. My only bias is that I experienced VR and am convinced that it is so good that it cannot be ignored by anyone who doesn't outright have an agenda against VR. That's why I keep hammering the issue of lacking software, because I myself want such software and it doesn't exist. Someone claiming that Horizon VR is an AAA-game, even ignoring that it very likely isn't in absolute financial terms, ignores what that game turned out to be: another hyper-linear, guided "experience" with simplified, weird combat and none of the freedom you know from the main games.

If VR stagnated despite the existence of appealing AAA-games, then I'd be more open to the "it's not a sw problem"-argument. But nobody has tried yet and it's unfair to dismiss VR at this point. VR hasn't had its Mario 64-moment yet (Alyx being PCVR-only requiring potent PCs didn't help; a VR-exclusive HL3 would be a potential Mario 64-moment).

Maybe we can continue this discussion in the VR-thread, though, if need be. I don't even know what the situation of VR is in Japan is, outside of Vtubers :D

Lite bundles for AC?

Ok, thanks, I was thinking it wrong!

ah ok, thanks, did not know that. But I am not sure if new spirits would really explain a sales increase?
Yeah, I don't think that's enough of a reason. It probably has more to do with the lack of a massive holiday title this season, which helped many other games shine a bit.

If Famitsu sales are to be believed for Momotaro then digital ratio for the game is at rather low level (not that it's unexpected)
Since the 1M sellthrough number is most likely up to this week that gives ~100k digital sales or so
eShop 2023 estimates for it were 100-200k and likely closer to 100k so it's not something unexpected.

Definitely above 100k digital, as the report was at most up until the 11th, but likely still below 150k.

Wasn't expecting to get an update this time of the week but it's quite welcome. Good to see Spider-Man 2 so close to 200k.

Pleasant surprise to see the Switch have a +100k week :). PS5 sales have been around 40k for the last couple of weeks which makes me think that the baseline for the PS5 for this year will be around 15-20k. On the other hand I think that the baseline of the Switch will be what the PS5 did last year so 40-50k.
