The second best-selling game of the month belongs to Xbox's Starfield. After four weeks the game is narrowly behind Forza Horizon 5's launch in terms of sales, which remains the fastest-selling first-party Xbox game this generation (note: Forza Horizon 5 was also available on Xbox One). Of course, both games were available upon release in the subscription service Game Pass, so the true scale of their success is not purely about how many copies it sold. Two-thirds of the Starfield’s unit sales were on PC.

There's another new game at No.3 in the form of Mortal Kombat 1. The Warner Bros game's first three weeks on sale are down 24% compared with the opening of Mortal Kombat 11. Mortal Kombat has an audience in the UK, but the title's popularity is typically much stronger in North America.

In fourth place is another new game in NBA 2K24. The 2K Games sports title didn't do as well as last year's version, with sales down 26% year-on-year. Again, NBA is a title that focuses on the US market.

Estimates:
PS5 - 102K
XBS - 54K

PS5 (+53%) YoY
XBS (-13%) YoY

Very strong month for PS5 driven by the FC 24 bundle and the deep discounts I expect. Spidey bundle probably helped a bit too.

Xbox sales aren't bad but Starfield should have done better for it.

Are you sure about your figures?

They are estimates.

We had actual figures some time ago, and for the last years or so we get % changes. You can backtrack and calculate from the % changes but due to how many % changes you do, there's some deviation.

Like 3-4K off is 5% off.

I'm curious if Dring is saying 0% here or if its a few single digits though.

Flat is a close to 3% YoY change at the absolut maximum. It's generally 1 - 2.x% only. Ding is talking about single digit % change very often. Low single digits, high single digits. That's all more than just flat.
And that percentage number is also only flat for low absolut numbers.
Like a 800 unit difference being 2.3% on 35k units.

I think a few hundred units in this case. Maybe low 1.xxx

Looking at WB games in general, Hogwarts Legacy just keeps on keeping on in the UK. Should do very well in October as well, both Steam and PSN have a 30% off on HL and other WB games as part of a publisher sales.

Looking at MK1, the game seems to have under performed in all of Europe quite significantly.

MK1 vs MK11 UK - 24% down
MK1 vs MK11 EU - 39% down

The game would have to vastly over perform MK11 in the US/CA for the game's launch to not be a regression in sales.

XBS might struggle to sell 500K. Which is wild to me. I'm sure the XB1 was doing close to if not a 1 million in 2016.

What I have

2022
PS5: 66K
XBS: 62K
NSW: 48K

2023
PS5: 99K
XBS: 61K
NSW: 32K

No official bundles, no aggressive marketing (price reductions) = mediocre results. Makes sense.

Looks like the marketing push is starting this week, though. I wonder what they're cooking for the holidays.

Also great result for not-FIFA, looks like the name change had barely an impact on anything. Easy money saved.

+136% starfield did as well as software can be expected for a single month. the hype for spiderman 2 just doesnt seem to be there so i'm not expecting double ps5 sales next month.

the fact S sales were the leader doesnt bode well in my mind.

It's hard to understand why Series X didn't received a bundle with Starfield. In fact it should had received not only a bundle but a special edition console like the Halo Infinite one.

Still, for Xbox currently situation on the market (relative low demand and price spike), september was a good month.

Proper comparison is YoY and it is on slight decline. And vast majority of Starfield sales are on PC

No hype for Spiderman 2??

can you post the split by month for 2022 (jan-dec) and 2023 (jan-sep) ?

probably because they want people to use game pass to play starfield for hours and hours rather than own it, given the option. FH5 got a bundle over a year later with the premium edition, when sales had tapered a bit. Diablo 4 got a bundle because it was a marketing deal signed with ABK in advance. I don't see how a standard XSX + Starfield bundle for $560 would be any more popular than someone just.. buying an XSX and Starfield separately. Or getting 3+ months of Game Pass Ultimate included. I'd expect a Bundle to happen when the DLC comes out perhaps.

And a limited edition variant didn't happen because they launched the console wrap instead.

At least the Xbox numbers are wrong.

Series consoles were down 23% YTD in August. So it's impossible they are flat YTD now, considering September was flat YoY.

Source:
"There was some growth for Xbox during August, with Series S and X sales up 7% compared with July. It still trails Switch and PS5, and sales are down nearly 23% year-to-date."
