Welcome to the very first (of many) weekly Switch eShop charts thread!

The Charts in this thread
Nintendo Switch eShop charts covering the period of Oct 04 - Oct 17, 2021 for the following regions: US, JP, UK, FR, DE, CA

Methodology
- The sales period covered by each of these regional charts is the past two weeks.

- These charts include only paid-for Nintendo Switch eShop titles. Any F2P titles (e.g. Fortnite) and any Cloud Versions of games (being free to start. e.g. Hitman 3) do not have a presence in the eShop charts Nintendo provides on the Switch.

- Each regional chart in this thread is a consolidation of the "Best Sellers - All Games" chart and the "Best Sellers - Download-Only games" chart from the Nintendo Switch account for its respective region:
  • Positions 1-30 in that chart are the paid-for software titles that have been downloaded most frequently over the past two weeks in that region, whether they also have a retail presence or not.
  • Retail sales of any titles with a retail presence are not taken into account.
  • ** All positions in the chart 31 and below include only eShop titles with no retail presence. This means that all the positions below 30 are not absolute ones - as there may exist titles with retail presence that were dowloaded less than the title in position 30 but (for example) were downloaded more than the title in position 31.
  • As a result of the above methodology, each chart may contain a different number of titles.

- All charts in this thread have been retrieved on the exact same day and date (always a Sunday) in their respective region. The time of the day the charts have been retrieved may differ though.

- Game names in all charts will be the US game name (as long as one exists), regardless of chart region. While a little less "accurate", using the same game name will make it easier to compare how a game does across regions.

- With this being the first thread, we have no previous charts to compare to yet, so all titles in this thread's charts (except the US chart's top 30) will show as having a previous ranking of "00".

And now, without further ado, on to the main dishes...

It was to be expected, but it's still nice to see Metroid Dread at the top. I hope it stays close to it for the coming weeks.
Some of the regional quirks are also fun to observe, like the presence of Daedelic games in the German chart, the high rank of Fifa on the European charts, etc.

No. 23 in France - "Reussir : Code de la Route" - Practice for your driving test and challenge your friends! Discover the best way to learn the French Highway Code...

I wonder how tough the French driving test is...

It's also hilarious that AAA Clock charted in three regions, and in Japan it's almost in the Top 10.

The theory exam has a lot of stuff that aren't necessarily intuitive/that you wouldn't know otherwise.
I used a book that contained more or less everything that needs to be known. I don't remember how many pages there were exactly, something like 200 (not just text obviously, lots of pics and exemples of what could happen to you as a driver).

The test itself is made of 40 questions (the multiple choices kind), and to pass, you need 5 or less mistakes.
If you prepare well enough, it's not that hard. But you gotta spend several dozens of hours working on it.

In the game's case though, there was a sale, which explains its high placement

I don't think a driving test preparation game would get into the charts in most other countries even with a sale...

Added: Interesting fact: Super Mario Odyssey is charting in the top 30 of all European countries, but not in US, CA or JP.

Yeah, unless it's a simulation game you ain't getting in the German chart like that!
Driving School Simulator, now that would do well here.

Thanks, do you know if these are sorted though by sales? Our sources for each chart in the OP are the charts from each contributor's Switch, so there we know for a fact they are sorted.

Weird to see Tetris Effect doing pretty great everywhere except Japan and France?
Maybe a cultural thing (?) Also, coincidence or not, France is the country where Japanese games are most popular, at least among EU countries.

I just checked the HK eShop and the order of the website is random, besides some games are missing. For example, AAA Clock is Top 4 in Hong Kong. lol

I can't enter on the Korean eShop because it's necessary a kind of pass.

I would guess Korea is unsorted as well then.

Regarding AAA clock (which is on sale everywhere), the two Asian areas (Japan and HK) seem to have more of an affinity to it. Strange, since besides both being in Asia, they have very different cultures. I wonder if both Japanese and HK have more of a penchant for gadgets perhaps.

US and CA side by side
here's a side by side comparison of US and Canada, for those curious

image_2021-10-17_1524wnjxq.png

biggest differences which I notice right away are Canada loves MK8DX and BOTW. Stardew Valley and LEGO Worlds are also somewhat higher in 🇨🇦

Among Us is getting more play in 🇺🇸

Very similar tastes overall though between the two.

Yep. Unsurprisingly 😅

Canada does have a reputation of being somewhat keener on Nintendo than US, overall. But I am not sure how that would translate over time in relative software sales, if at all.

Excellent work.

Nick All star brawl is doing great !
Thank you. Yes it's doing great, but primarily in the US and CA. In FR for some reason it is totally absent, maybe it came (in a relatively low position) and went? It is also absent in JP top 30 but I am not sure if it was released there yet or not.

I'm interested in trying to get estimation of digital sales based on eShop placement, lets see if we can pull that off.

Interesting bit, the minimalist Dungeon Encounters from Square Enix that came out a few days ago is no. 3 in the Japanese eShop (but nowhere else).

the thing that stands out to me is that Mortal Kombat has good legs. remember when WB was surprised Nintendo wanted the game?

It is good to see it selling well still, although notably it is 75% right now, apparently the lowest it's ever been. That helps 😅

(We are looking into how we can display discounts in these charts; it's a little more complicated than it might seem, but it's definitely important)

I am certain that helps but it's not like the other versions don't have similar discounts, this is just the normal course for all games on the other platforms.

Oh, I didn't mean to imply otherwise. Only pointing out that is likely the reason it is charting so high atm.

Just another nail in the ancient "nintendo audience isn't for our game" argument's coffin. :) :p

Dungeon encounters charting high in Japan makes me happy. A gem in disguise. The game has a very small budget so I figure Japanese sales alone will make the game profitable.

I wish Disco Elysium charted a bit higher. But it's not unexpected considering how the game is.

It's definitely a "hardcore" game that simply can't resonate with the masses, given how exposition-heavy and text-based it is. But I think it's doing great for what it is.

Is the Switch port good?
It's not perfect but close enough I'd say.
No game breaking bug so far, I don't believe.
I got 2, 3 errors during loadings, whixh is basically the extent of its "issues" in... 15-2 hours of playtime.

Loading times are mid-long. It's not Divinity 2 level of ~minute long, but you feel them. Maybe around a good dozen of seconds.

Visually it looks very good. I can't talk resolution, it looks crisp to me (base 2017 switch).

It's a slow game so frame rate doesn't matter if even noticeable and I didn't see much trouble on that side.

I'm enjoying my time on it quite a lot. And from what I heard, it came in a good state compared to its 1st console release.

Are Canada and the US the same eShop region?
Yes. I don't know about the latest eShop additions, but the regions go like this:

NoA:
  • Canada
  • Mexico
  • United Stated
NoE:
  • Every country in the European Union
  • Australia
  • New Zealand
  • South Africa
NoJ:
  • Japan

UK is its own region...

No idea what these are under, my guess would be same as Australia, though as far as the number of countries we end up with in such a case doesn't make much sense

This is a brilliant idea for a regular thread - and this week shows the immense Metroid Dread domination, even in Japan where some may think it'd perform worse because of its recent history. Fantastic :D

Happy that Actraiser Renaissance is sticking around the Japan charts, but saddened it is already gone from the US charts.

Where is Metroid on this current week eShop ranking for japan? Game seems to have some sell outs in a few retailers

At this moment it's still #1, but the chart still accounts for day 1 sales for now

when the next thread is posted on Sunday we'll see where it lands

Oh ok I forgot it’s first 2 weeks are combined. When is the daily update? (To see if ranks swap/etc)

I don't think anybody knows - my impression actually is that these charts update several times a day. I could be wrong though.

If someone has time and patience they can test the US charts for example multiple times on a single a day and see if and when any changes whatsoever occur... It would have been fairly trivial to check if it were on some URL (like the Amazon charts), but to check this, one will need to open the eShop on one's Switch each and every time and extract all the data manually.

Search/Browse (top left in the orange-colored column of the eShop main page) -> "Other Search Filters" under the tab for "Downloadable Content" -> in the "Product Type" section of the Search Filters, click on the "Software" option -> click on "Search". The ranking you get in return is download-based. It includes both paid and free-to-download items; the Top 30 on the actual page and the Top 30 for paid-only items obtained by simply counting down through the list excluding free-to-download items fully overlap, so then it's "just" a matter of counting.

Are you certain that it is 100% exactly the same as the Switch's top 30 best seller lists ? (after removal of the free-to-downloads of course)

Added: just so it is clear, I am not doubting, I am asking. If it is 100% exactly the same results and doable in all regions, we will need to consider which methodology would be the best fit for us moving forward as far as what people would like to see.

100% sure about it, I checked whether they overlapped or not multiple times in the past already. I also just did a check on the US eShop and indeed they're the exact same rankings when free-to-download items are filtered out.

Also, note: I specifically say to click on the "Software" option of the "Search filter" because otherwise, by choosing "All", you get DLC bundles as well which make the whole ranking worthlessly cluttered.
