PS5/XBS Stock Watch: 2024 and Beyond

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Since March 2020 consoles around the world have been in immediate sellout status which has plagued the launch of both new gen systems, the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Normally there's enough supply to always satisfy current demand so the only way to get a read on console sales is through a general base line over a period of months and typical boosts in demand such as game releases, price cuts, and seasonal trends.

Not in 2021 with PS5/XBS! The biggest game could launch tomorrow but if no retailer has any stock, no consoles get sold. However, that leaves us in a unique situation. Thanks to every major retailer in the US doing online drops and making events out of having stock for each system, we actually have a record for when each console is in supply. We could even map out which weeks would have more stock than the other based on how many retailers have units that week.

This thread's purpose is to be a record of those drops and an archive of previous drops so we can have a timeline for PS5 and XBS.

But don't think this is just for the US! I'm one person focusing on one country. If you live in the UK or Germany, or anywhere else and can provide something similar, then feel free! Depending on how Switch OLED is handled, we could have that join this thread.

I will be using the NPD schedule to determine week to week and what weeks are in what month.

Best Buy had 301 stores selling PS5/XSX. According to insiders and people who went to the stores the smallest allocation was around 50 consoles each and then the more populated cities got upwards of 100 consoles. PS5/XSX should have sold somewhere between 20,000 and 25,000 each.

Best Buy had 301 stores selling PS5/XSX on September 23. According to insiders and people who went to the stores the smallest allocation was around 50 consoles each and then the more populated cities got upwards of 100 consoles. PS5/XSX should have sold somewhere between 20,000 and 25,000 each.

The second GameStop in PS5 Week 5 was a limited region in store event. A few thousand would have been sold, not on the same level as an online drop.

Target will sell Xbox Series X|S whenever they get stock. This is opposite of what they do for PS5 and what every other retailer does which holds onto stock until a specific day. For example if Target stores received Xbox units on September 13 those stores would sell them that day. If PS5 were sent on September 13 they would not be sold until Target's set date of September 19.

General reading of the month, Weeks 1 and 2 are the slow weeks. Week 3 should is an improvement, I would say Week 4 is the peak of the month, then Week 5 is the second best week. The below is my reading of the week to week. ~ = similar sales to the above. + = up from week above, - = down from week above.

+ Week 3
++ Week 4

Great thread, will be interesting to follow. Does your prediction of PS5 having a massive (~500k) month for September still hold, Welfare?

I wonder how much stock of PS5 Amazon got, that could be the biggest difference.

Right now I'm predicting around 450K. Xbox has been disappointing in comparison. I would be shocked if it goes over 300K.

PS5 over XBS has two Amazon drops, an extra Walmart drop, more at target (?) and two antonline drops. I guess that's quite significant, also I think Sony direct tends to sell more than MS store right?

Yeah I believe Sony Direct sells more than the MS Store. Just in general PS5 sends more stock than Xbox. I think two big parts are 1) The cloud servers needing X chips which just got finished and 2) The Halo Xbox. June showed Xbox can have plenty of units, but right now they could be self limited until November.

General reading of the month, every week for the PS5 was good to great. It would seem like Weeks 1, 2, and 3 were around the same level with Week 4 being the peak week. Xbox Series in contrast looks to have slowly built up over the month, peaking in Week 4.

Since we have somewhat accurate NPD results, we could map out sales like this. Not meant to be 100% accurate but a good visual.

General reading of the month, Week 1 is the lowest selling week and possibly next to nothing for both consoles. Target that week was noted to be a small drop. Week 3 for both is also clearly the peak. PS5 Week 2/4 are around the same thanks to Week 4 having Walmart and Target in place of Best Buy and Sony Direct, and XBS Week 2 has more stores than Week 4.

The Xbox GameStop drop was an in store event across all GameStop's nation wide. I “surveyed” over 60 pictures/stores and came to the following average store amount. Note that some people didn’t post a pic, only stating what the store had. This led to a lot of them only posting the X number, not the S. There is a correlation between the number of X to S sent, so any missing number can be filled in pretty accurately.

702 confirmed X
162 confirmed S
89 confirmed combined (No split given)

Just off that, it’s an average of ~15 Xbox’s, but many S are uncounted because of posters only caring to reveal the X amount. Of the available X and S numbers, there is a consistent ~65:35 going on. If a store got ~18-22 X, they would get ~8-12 S. ~4-8 X, ~2-4 S. You get it?

Factoring that in, that total number averages out closer to nearly 19 Xbox’s sent to each GameStop. GameStop Twitter also confirmed all stores were receiving units. There were 3,192 stores in the US as of January 30 and GameStop noted they plan to further downsize. Assuming a slow rate in the 4 ½ months since then, I would put GameStop down to nearly ~3,000. Maybe closer to ~3,100.

That would mean a good range of 55,000 - 60,000.

I had written down that a small PS5 Digital Edition drop happened at Walmart this week at like 4AM but I've run into the problem where Twitter only shows the last 3,200 tweets of an account and I can't find it reported anywhere else. It was most likely a tiny amount but still needs to be noted.

Basically XBS outsold PS5 2:1 at Amazon.

Target will sell Xbox Series X|S whenever they get stock. This is opposite of what they do for PS5 and what every other retailer does which holds onto stock until a specific day. For example if Target stores received Xbox units on June 13 those stores would sell them that day. If PS5 were sent on June 13 they would not be sold until Target's set date of June 19.

General reading of the month, Weeks 1 and 2 were dreadfully slow. This was made up for by explosive Weeks 3 and 4. This aligns with the end of the quarter (April - June) which makes sense. The same happened with March and September.

Since we have somewhat accurate NPD results, we could map out sales like this. Not meant to be 100% accurate but a good visual.

In Japan seems like series S is getting more widely available, is in stock in Amazon since a couple of days (still in stock now) and I even saw 2 in my local GEO store selling at retail price this weekend. No sign of availability for Series X or PS5 though.

Target began selling Xbox in stores again October 17.

GameStop had two limited in store events selling PS5 in certain states. Limited reported pointed to stores having up to 50 units.

Yes, the PS5 had no drops in Week 1.

A general reading, we know Sony plans to match/exceed PS4 shipments in the same time frame, and has generally kept to that with worldwide shipments of PS5 life to date only being 400K behind PS4. PS5 continues to sell out in the US while PS4 was readily available by this point in the year, and for a comparison the PS4 sold 297K in the October 2014 NPD. The only downside to PS5 this month is the complete lack of sales in Week 1. Technically, PS5 is only going to have 3 weeks of sales. To compensate, they put up a hell of a fight in stocking the PS5. Every major retailer saw supply and most retailers saw multiple restocks. I would say that sales should have been trending up every week, peaking at Week 4.

Xbox was a bit more spaced out but one big blind spot is Series S. Who knows where that's selling most of the time because only the Series X gets mentioned by stock watchers. GameStop always has an All Access option and Target could be a good reason as they don't publicize when Xbox drops, Amazon will always get mentioned since they get stock like once a month, maybe two. All we are left with is Series X and, this month was alright? I would say Week 3 was the peak thanks to Amazon, then Week 1, Week 4, then Week 2. One thing to note about Xbox is that throughout the year it has progressively grown, from the absolute bottom of January to what I would say is nearly double that now. The brand is also historically a major holiday performer so maybe we get surprised by the amount of units available this month. Microsoft did make note that they managed to ship more units than expected last quarter, so maybe.

Target changed how they would sell Xbox Series X|S on May 18 (Week 3) to no longer being an "event" as in not hoarding supply for weeks for one massive drop, but to instead sell units as they came in.

A general reading is that despite the plentiful restocks, not a lot of units were sent. PS5 in particular since it's the lowest month so far this year. PS5 looks to have started low in Week 1 and grow throughout the month.

Xbox was a bit more sporadic. Week 2 looks like the low point with Week 1 or 3 being the peak, Week 3 depends on if Target got a ton of stock to "commemorate" the switch in selling Xbox consoles.

[11]Xbox Series S Fortnite and Rocket League $299 Bundle was announced and sold at "participating retailers" November 18. GameStop has it listed as Unavailable with a release date of November 18, Amazon says it releases January 31, 2022. Best Buy website won't sell it until December 02, Walmart and Target don't show it, and the MS Store forces you to bundle it with additional games and accessories which boost the price to a minimum of $380. Any retailer not the MS Store that would be selling is either waiting until Black Friday or is already selling it in store potentially.

So, any idea of how was the supply for PS5 and Series X on this black friday?
Nothing today. I have estimates for GameStop yesterday that are ~50K PS5 and higher for Xbox. Will post that later.

GameStop - Thanksgiving Recap
Like in June, GameStop stores posted public info on how many consoles they would have. I have scoured +100 stores and have some data to share. PS5, Xbox Series X and S, and Switch were sold and 2,541 stores were open on Thanksgiving. I won't focus on Switch since I barely found reports on that.

To start off, it seems like PS5 was available in every store. Didn't see one posted that had 0 PS5. Unfortunately, many only cared to post the PS5 number. That doesn't mean there were no Xbox, just they went unreported. Now, the Series X actually had a number of stores where they didn't get sent. Apparently Microsoft fucked up and couldn't get the units out in time? Series S on the other hand was more available and I would bet is in most stores that appear to be PS5 only. That doesn't mean Series S is at every store either, I did see some stores that didn't have them.

PS5
At 102 confirmed stores (4% of GameStop's), PS5 sold ~1,900 units. That is an average of 18-19 consoles per store. The great thing is that this average was found very early and if I were to only count the first 50 stores, the average is in the same range. Any range of stores, this average holds up.

Extrapolated to 100% of stores, that would equal somewhere between 45,000 and 50,000 units.

Xbox
Because of more limited data, my confidence in this is way lower.

At 42 confirmed stores (1.65% of GameStop's), Xbox Series X|S sold ~1,200 units. Series X was ~530, Series S ~630. 2 reports were vague "Xbox" so I took that as both which was 45 additional combined units. There's a mix of stores that had X only reported, S only, and X with S. I believe every store that had the X also had the S.

The X averaged 20-21 consoles per store (26) and the S averaged 24-25 per store (also 26). Looking at it, almost every store had more S than X, and if X>S, it's only by a few units. Sometimes S would be way ahead of X, one store had 24 X, 47 S. If I went to each store that had an X but no S reported and just made S equal, S jumps up to ~880 (nearly 1,500 total) across 39 stores, or an average of 22-23 per store. Again, that's only assuming the S were equal to X. In all likely hood, most of these stores would have more S, keeping in line with the other 24-25 average.

Comparisons
Looking only at confirmed stores that had both PS5 and Xbox (either SKU), there were 35. Xbox lead PS5 by ~380 units. I suspect many remaining stores had Series S.

Looking at PS5 v S, S almost always had more units. 6 out of 24 stores PS5 equaled or had more than S. At worst, on average if a store had both the PS5 and S, they would be equal or have an S lead.

I can't give a clear estimate for Xbox because of the lack of confirmed stores. The best I can do is low ball?

If only ~80% of stores got the Series S (2,000), then the S sold between 44,000 and 50,000 units.
If only ~70% of stores got the Series X (1,800), then the X sold between 36,000 and 40,000 units.

X could have been lower? S higher? It's hard to say, so maybe a bigger range is needed. Series S could go as high as 60,000 if in 90% of stores and Series X could go as low as 26,000 if only 50% of stores got it. Combined would range between 70,000 and 100,000

In general, Series S looks to have been a match for PS5. Those should've been near equal, with it being likely S sold more. Add on the X and Xbox looks to have taken GameStop during Black Friday week.

This does not include any of the Series S that was sold online at the same time, so adding that, it's highly likely Series S sold more than PS5.

Quick Edit: It appears more Series X will be sold today? If it happens that only grows the gap in favor of Xbox.
Not as quick edit: More Series X was sold today.

Is there some regional pattern on Gamestop stores missing Xbox consoles? That would put more merit to the claim of shipping / destitution issues. So it might not been the manufacturing this time, but logistics.

The remaining units should hit the stores in December then.
I also heard about some people getting the Series S bundle shipped from Gamestop already, while others have to wait longer.
That seems to be related to their distribution centers, too.
