PS5/XBS Stock Watch: 2024 and Beyond

As PS5 didn't reach #1 spot on the hourly it's probably save to assume the second drop was the smaller one of the two?!

70 or 80k PS5 sold total on Amazon.
Xbox Series combines above 100k.

Stock shortages make it possible, that the week after Christmas is a big one^^

Yes, the 30K drop was the smaller of the two. We know the Series X was 21K and then had an additional drop, and PS5 was higher than that at first.

PS5 is probably around 100K, -+10K. Lines up with my estimate of the Series S bundle being around there.

Christmas shopping continues and concludes this month. Typically the 3 major events this month are Cyber Monday (Monday after Thanksgiving), Super Saturday (Saturday before Christmas), and Christmas (Christmas).

We actually have quite a lot to go on this month, with numerous GameStop and Amazon leaks that point to both consoles being up month over month. This is expected however as December is 5 weeks compared to November's 4 weeks.

Like November, it's easy to read that Xbox sold more this month. It closed the gap at Amazon along with a third SKU and the Series S was reported to be available all month at major retailers, and if we look at the above collection of retailers it's clear Xbox had more drops as well.

Microsoft has been sending out emails with direct links to buying an Xbox Series X

Target sells Xbox Series X and S in stores as of October 17. Any day of the week could have Series X and S stock. I point out the website restocks.

Target PS5 restock is a massive one. Here's a tweet thread but the gist is multiple store were seeing +100 units and many had dozens of units

The GameStop Xbox event has over 1,000 stores participating.

Thanks for the later than usual update @Welfare

I believe this is still very valuable for the whole year of 2022. Summer 2023 widespread shortages are certainly gone.
Unless a fucking war in Ukraine happens.

Xbox Series S is in stock at GameStop, Walmart, Best Buy, Amazon, and Target.

Target began selling Xbox in stores again October 17. On any day they could sell units.

Looking at January after December's massive list of retailers is kinda sad, but understandable. Amazon didn't even have a PS5 or Series X drop this month.

Beyond this roundup, we know the PS5 Target drop in Week 1 was massive. This was the most PS5's the retailer had sold at once. Leaks from employees that could see store distribution were seeing stores receiving multiple dozens of units, some even +100 units to a single store.

Amazon sold the Series S the whole month and placed very well at #16. There's some concern for the week to week sales as it's been sliding since the start of the year but it looks like it might be making a come back for February.

PS5 has an important update. Sony has revised down their FY forecast to 11.5M units, which would mean only 2M PS5's will be shipped this current quarter. This is down from last year's 3.3M. How Sony splits US sales this quarter could be critical as they will have 1.3M less units to work with compared to 2021. January could be impacted by this, but I suspect February and March will be harder hit. Basically, PS5 US Q1 2021 sell through sales were ~33% of the worldwide shipment (3.3M). On the flip side, Q4 2021 was over 40%. Of that 2M expected shipments, that could mean PS5 will only be working with 660K to 800K units for all of Q1 2022, assuming Sony doesn't heavily pivot to the US to fend off Xbox and ship closer to 50% here. If not, PS5 would be closer to that lower range.

Nothing new, but that's kind of the point. This week has been awful for PS5 and Series X.

Series X has the slight benefit that any random Target could sell them, but jeez this is the slowest week in months

So something that never got reported on and I don't know how long it's been available exactly, but the GameStop website has been selling Series X All Access for over a week now. Just something to note.

I think it's safe to say that the Series S was a great plan by MS. Even in a week like this when there is no Playstation 5 or Xbox Series X stock if you want a next gen platform the Series S can be found. I've also a lot of people I know and on social media picking up the Series S because it plays next gen games, it's cheap, and is readily available.

How are things looking compared to Jan/Feb 2021?

I assume Xbox Series S is way up YoY but not so much for PS5/Xbox Series X.

Series S alone should see significant YOY improvements over total XBS sales in January and February. XBS 2021 was a horrible start due to production.

PS5 should be down YOY by February due to lower shipments than last year.
Can't believe January might be a bigger month than February due to stock.
There are still the last two weeks left, tho. We'll see.
Missing one week of sales could already put February below January for PS5. Xbox can still be up MOM due to Series S.

Do you have a rough estimation for the total shipment so far this FY for xbox series s and x? I am wondering if the total shipment this FY for both PlayStation 5 and xbox series actually is below that of Nintendo Switch.

From April 2021 to December 2021 I estimate PS5+XBS to be ~17.6M

Switch is 18.95M

Best Buy update: According to multiple people, some Best Buy's are actually selling PS5 and Xbox in store. There's a trick on the website that lets you see which stores in your area have them and people have actually been allowed to buy a PS5 or Series X.

Gamefly, Costco and Antonline are super small (console) retailers relative to the big 5.
PS5 had one mini Target drop and Series X one at Gamestop.
In Germany we had one smaller retailer having a PS5 digital only drop in February so far. Some local retailers have a few Series X left for sale. That's it.

Predictions will be impossible and all over the place.
Maybe the Xbox One May 2014 negative record could be broken?
There should be no leftover inventory for PS5, right?

as in sold back/returned to retailers?

February is a special month in the US as this is around where tax reporting starts (January) and tax refunds are sent to tax payers (around start of February). What this means is that any money overpaid in taxes for the prior year will be sent back to the tax payer as a correction. The average refund this year is around $3,500

February looks to be horrible for PS5, less so for Series X. This is the least amount of drops for a month in a long time. We already know Sony only plans on shipping 2M units worldwide for the January to March 2022 quarter. This is down from last year's 3.3M. How Sony splits US sales this quarter could be critical as they will have 1.3M less units to work with compared to 2021. January is estimated to have been high (think +300K), but going by these February drops, we are starting to see the limitations of the reduced shipments. PS5 US Q1 2021 sell through sales were ~33% of the worldwide shipment (3.3M). It's possible we are only looking at 300K - 500K remaining units to be sent to the US over February and March.

Series S has been available all month again and was consistent in its ranking on Amazon (#16 in January & February) while having the reintroduction of the Fortnite Bundle adding even more sales. Series X on the other hand might be in a similar spot to PS5. The first two weeks were bare while the later half was somewhat busy.

Series X is still available at Walmart 3 days later, so this is either a massive shipment or we're starting to see demand slowly catch up to the X.

This is March, end of the quarter, so it's likely just a massive shipment. March 2021 was a massive increase over January and February 2021 for a recent comparison.

I’d be super impressive if MS is able to sell another 300k this month cause that would possibly be 3 months of close to or over 300k units sold. Something that I don’t think ever happened during the last generation besides non holiday months

The Gamestop restock for tomorrow seems to be huge, too.
Small states with 5 or more locations having a stock didn't happen since a long time.

Just look how much more cluttered the east is for Series X. This will be a massive drop.

Xbox may ship more consoles WW than PS5 this quarter, if Sony really ship only 2.0 million.
The only time an Xbox shipped 2M or more in Q1 was 2011 at 2.7M.

Technically, Xbox One and 360 combined to 2M in Q1 2014 but that's cheating :p

It might be close, but it would be crazy if revenue points to Xbox having shipped more to start the year. Too bad Microsoft will never say they did

Xbox seems to be selling better than PS5 in almost everywhere. I'm sure it will ship more WW.

Was a little bored and looked up the 8 smallest states, excluding DC that does not have any GS?
PS5 had 18 locations and Series X 52 locations.

Some bigger outliners like KS and NE had PS5 with 0 and Series X 44 locations.
Someone should write a bot to count the locations.

Yeah it's difficult to lock down console sales right now (because retailers / online are wildly fluctuating who is getting what inventory) but I'll also add that March is looking very good for Xbox Series

I think it'll be a great month for them but we'll see
