  • Thread starter
From Chloe Woitier (that regularly has interviews/articles about the industry in France):

Official Top 20 from @SELL_JeuxVideo just came out :
1) FC 24
2) Hogwarts Legacy
3) Zelda TOKT
4) Mario Wonder
Note that Baldur's Gate 3 isn't present because Larian doesn't share their numbers
GJJN8eJWAAANfV7
Doesn't count bundles.
Doesn't include digital for Nintendo.

I wonder if Nintendo would have the top 3 slots with Zelda, Super Mario and Mario Kart, if digital was included and if it was individual SKU. Very impressive for 8th year.

No, digital is way smaller in FR than somewhere like UK and Nintendo digital is even smaller than that. Last year PS 1P had digital ratios of 20%. Wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo was in the 10%.

What's up with the jump in the "full digital software" category?

image.png

By my calculations, it went from about 600M€ in 2022 to about 900M€ in 2023, despite having been fairly stable since 2020

Elden Ring - 410k
Fallout 4 - 273k (phy only)
Witcher 3 - 273k (phy only)
Starfield - 47k (PC only)

AC: V - 566k
AC: M - 357k
AC: O - 322k (no digital)

FFXV - 235k (phy)
FF7R - <142k (phy)
FF16 - 104k < x < 154k

RE8 - 174K
RE4R - < 154K

TLOU II - 434k
SM2 - 380k
GOWR - 370k
SM - 345k (phy)

Mirage did great, RE4 okay.
SM2 beating GOWR is good but its likely a bit behind SM.
FF16 did okay, may even be close to FF7R
Starfield, similar to UK, has a catastrophic decline(80-90%) from prior BGS titles.

Again worth pointing out that digital is substantially lower than places like UK. For older titles, like pre 2020, its likely in the 10 percents.

There's actually one chart almost tailor made to answer this question:

This is top 20 games by console SKUs.

Zelda is #1
Wonder has a chance with a high enough digital ratio but Mario Kart is not making it to #3.
EA FC 24 is just too far away.

From the report regarding the 2023 console only in France :

Complete digital games : 737 M €
Complete physical games : 614 M €

DLC, mtx, services and subscription are not included

I suppose Nintendo data are included in those physical games and not included in the digital side, because that could mean that digital would be (a bit ?) higher.

As for the digital numbers, even if I take into account that digital only games are included, special deals and so on, I think they look quite good.

7 of the individual top 20 are EA football games.
I knew it was big, but not that ubiquitos.
Surprised Football Manager isn't.

console digital ratios for a bunch of games in this report:

EA FC 24: 45.6% (48.8% PS4/PS5*, 10.4% Switch, 64.7% Xbox)
Hogwarts Legacy: 33% (38.6% PS5, 24.7% PS4, 10.2% Switch, 52.2% Xbox)
COD MW3: 48.6% (48.5% PS5)
FIFA 23: 52.4% (35.1% Switch)
Spiderman 2: 28%
Assassin's Creed Mirage: 33.4% (33.3% PS5)
GTA V: 54.3% (38.7% PS5, interestingly the PS4 version is at least 42.8% digital and presumably a lot higher given the overall %)
Gran Turismo 7: 30.4%
Star Wars Jedi Survivor: 37.7%
FF16: <32%

*for some reason PS4 digital is literally 0, I'm guessing this is an error and somehow PS digital all got allocated to PS5

He exaggerated, but it's definitely much lower all around compared to the UK. (also lol at 10% digital for the two big 3rd party games on Switch)

France and UK PC/Console splits of multiplatform are in similar range apart from Diablo 4. Consoles dominating by huge margin.

Not looking good for subs anywhere.

"On console, spending on microtransactions (largely the purchase of virtual currency on online games such as Fortnite ) suddenly fell by 16% (234 million euros). The French have also made drastic cuts (-46%!) in their PlayStation Plus, Xbox Game Pass or Nintendo Online subscriptions."

If peoples are interested I will do my usual compilation latter.

At first glance Hardware seams to have done it's best year since 2008/2009 in revenus.

FF7 Remake sold 192K with digital. FF16 seem to have sold 150k looking at overall revenue.

Gran Turismo 7 sold 353k in 2022 and 178k in 2023: 531k

Thanks! Yeah there's no way Mario Kart is making it to number 3. Three in the top five is still pretty darn impressive.

Even in 2023 Nintendo has blown away the other game publishers in France despite Nintendo is the only one for which digital sales aren't included and the only one that doesn't rely on a multi-platform strategy.

Remember that Nintendo has vouchers program that greatly increases digital sales. So there's absolutely no reason to believe Nintendo's digital ratio in France is just 10%.

Seem like this update from 31th Octuber 2023 included digital despite claim of retail only.

"The latest example of that comes from France. Nintendo France has confirmed to Le Figaro that retail sales of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom have reached 1,000,000 in the country. They also expect to see sales of the Nintendo Switch reach 8,000,000 by the end of January 2024."

Overall sales are likely 1.1m for Zelda TOTK with digital included.

~10-12% digital share.

Voucher are worthless when you can buy Zelda at 50€ at retail.
I agree with almost all Nintendo games, except Smash and the Zeldas which are often a bit higher than 50€ at retail.

Vouchers is a bit of a saving, but more importantly it makes digital on par/below retail which is very different than for all the other games (where retail is sometimes far cheaper).

So you won't have digital shares at 50% like in Japan, but it should be above the rest of the other games (which hover around 10% for FIFA/HL).

To be more precise Zelda was exactly at 51€ at Leclerc/Carrefour last year.

It's the reason average price is so low compared to the "normal" price.

Are you estimating FF7 Remake sales? Thought we only got a bound of physical sales.
Yeah 140-150K for FF16 sounds about right.

GT7 is now selling faster than GOWR and pretty much every PS Studios game bar SM and maybe TLOU II in France.

Spider-Man (2018) - 345.292 (retail only)
Spider-Man 2 - 380.263 (retail + digital)

Should be pretty close even with SM digital. I'm thinking 10% for SM. 2022 PS titles had ratios of 20%.

We have revenus for Final Fantasy VII Remake.

It was 13.459.703€.

192k is with a high average price of 70€ due to digital limited editions.

Standard edition was bellow 7,8M€ in revenus.

Nearly 1.55m for FIFA FC Sports 24 total
Zelda needs higher digital sales than Hogwarts on PS5 total to beat that. Seems unlikely to have a >35% digital split with those enormous physical sales.

SoT above Starfield on PC is funny.

Can you explain how you came to that conclusion?

This should be obvious. Nintendo claimed at the end of October, that TotK had sold 1 Mio. units by retail. But now we know, that it sold 'only' 973k retail by the end of December. So it is not possible that it already sold 1 Mio. units till October in retail ;) So October numbers must already contain digital sales OR they have been very very inaccurate

Can you please stop with this condescending act?

So either Nintendo was wrong in October or SELL is wrong now.

ToTK is a more expensive Switch game making it a no brainer for vouchers.

Totk + Mario Wonders would be a great value combo (especially since Zelda seems to be exempt of the Amazon.fr 15€ discount)

It’s just shipped vs Sold. Nothing to dismiss either Nintendo or SELL

Condescending? I simply answered your question. And yes, we have three options now

1. Nintendo (or Le Figaro) was wrong in October, because they only refered to retail sales
2. Nintendo (or Le Figaro) was wrong in October in general and claimed wrong numbers overall
3. SELL is wrong now

But I highly doubt Option 3, because several weeks ago, we had another Nintendo Interview regarding french numbers with sales data for TotK - and these data also showed that the previously mentioned October numbers can not be true. So Option 1 or 2 should be the correct ones - as the user you posted mentioned before

You saying it is so obvious and using that wink smiley makes you sound incredibly condescending, yes.

I appreciate your answer aside from that though. Thank you.

@Tialo unfortunately the written word can be hard to interpret. Been there myself. Even if we think something is innocuous, our audience may think otherwise. Goes to show we all need to be mindful how we interact with others in writing since we have no facial expressions to go alongside it.

Saying something "should be obvious" I can see as something than can be considered condescending.

Great legs for GT7, and from the revenue list it looks like it's selling at a high price!
How much did the game sell in 2022?

Edit: Okay, I found it:
12./00. Gran Turismo 7 (Sony Interactive Entertainment) {2022.03.04} (69€) - 353.771 / NEW <28,15%>
Which means that the total sales of the game by the end of 2023 is 531,469 copies With total revenue of 35,407,390€.

It looks to me like PC audience in FR and UK are willing to spend a lot less on new titles. Older titles seem to have much better ratios due to price cuts whereas new AAA titles tend to have 10-15% marketshare. A few new AAA titles have much bigger PC presence like COD or obviously Diablo.

These wider market stats are pretty worthless given how little of the PC market is covered. No Valve, Epic, Riot, Roblox, Tencent, CD Projekt, Larian, Hoyoverse, Pocketpair, 99% of indies, etc, etc.

These panel based trackers are only a good comparison between the (mainly console centric) traditional AAA pubs. Minus Nintendo and (sometimes) T2.

There is a difference between the charts who are from GSD with the limitation you listed and the full markets stats.

These wider stats are estimate for the full market and come from SELL estimates not GSD.
GSD is one of the sources used by SELL to draw these estimates but not the only one.
(Data are completed by Gametrack estimates).

Also Take 2 digital is always include by GSD they never had issue with them.

Also about GSD:
Launched in 2013, the GSD project is the result of
a European initiative run by the VGE (Video Games
Europe) with around a hundred partners, with the aim of unifying data collection from different territories and regrouping this data (physical or digital) within one tool available to trade associations, distributors and video game publishers participating in the panel.
The retail panel has been launched in 25 European
countries. The GSD digital panel today covers 53
countries in Europe, North America, the Middle East,
Africa and Asia-Pacific. The panel is operated by Sparkers.
Digital panel: digital data sales cover complete game sales on the PlayStation Network (PSN), Xbox Live
(XBL), Nintendo eShop (third-party publishers) and
PC sales networks (Steam, Epic, proprietary stores).
The sales figures are sent each week directly by the
38 video game publishers taking part in the project
and therefore do not require any extrapolation. GSD is the only source of data on complete game downloads based on real sales. From 2024, GSD will also be tracking in-game purchases (DLC) in the digital panel.
