State of the market
Projected total US spending on video game hardware, content and accessories gained 4% in March 2024 vs YA, reaching $4.9B. Mobile content spending grew 15%, offseting a 32% drop in hardware. (Mobile source: Sensor Tower)

Mobile’s strong performance was supplemented by a 3% increase in Console Content spend, along with a 2% gain in the PC, Cloud and Non-Console VR Content segment. Mobile accounted for 89% of the total year-on-year growth in video game content spending during the month.

Hardware
February video game hardware spending fell 32% when compared to a year ago, to $391 million. PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and Switch spending each declined a minimum of 30% year-on-year. Hardware spending finished the first quarter down 24% versus the first quarter of 2023.

PlayStation 5 led the hardware market in unit and dollar sales during both March and the first quarter. Nintendo Switch once again finished 2nd in unit sales across both time periods while Xbox Series ranked 2nd in dollars.
Software
Dragon’s Dogma II debuted as the best-selling premium game of March and the 3rd best-selling game of 2024 YTD. With just one month in market, Dragon’s Dogma II has already surpassed the life-to-date tracked dollar sales of Dragon’s Dogma and Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen combined.

Helldivers II remains the best-selling premium game of 2024 year-to-date after placing 2nd in March. Helldivers II currently ranks 7th in lifetime US dollar sales for Sony published titles after just two months in market. PC has been a huge part of the success of Helldivers II in the US. With PC, Helldivers II is already the 7th highest grossing Sony published game in history. Without PC it wouldn't currently rank among the top 20. Just the PS5 version would make Helldivers II the best-selling game in the US YTD. As would just the PC version.

Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth remained the 4th best-selling game of 2024 year-to-date, despite falling 5 spots in the monthly rankings to 7th in March after placing 2nd in February. Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth currently ranks 14th across all Final Fantasy releases in lifetime dollar sales in the US market. Final Fantasy XV is 1st all-time, followed by Final Fantasy VII: Remake and the original Final Fantasy VII. If you added Final Fantasy VII Remake & Rebirth Twin Pack solely to Rebirth the year-to-date sales rankings would not change.

Hi-Fi Rush was in the Top 50 Revenue ranking.
Mobile
Sensor Tower reports the top 10 games by US consumer spending in March and the change in rank vs Feb as: MONOPOLY GO!, Royal Match, Roblox, Candy Crush Saga, Coin Master (+1), Whiteout Survival (+1), Last War: Survival (+4), Pokémon Go (-3), Township (+1) and Clash of Clans (-2).

“The highlight this month is Last War: Survival, which grew 40% to overtake Pokémon GO, Township, and Clash of Clans,” said Samuel Aune of Sensor Tower. “Last War: Survival is now right on the heels of fellow 2023 4X Strategy launch Whiteout Survival (+14% MoM)."

“The top four games remain unchanged and continue to maintain a significant gap from the rest of the field, with MONOPOLY GO! still holding a commanding lead over 2nd place Royal Match,” said Aune.
Accessories
March spending on Accessories increased 9% when compared to a year ago to $242M, helped by 8% growth in headset/headphone spending.

The PlayStation Dual Sense Edge was the best-selling accessory in dollar sales during both March and the first quarter.

Very happy for Unicorn Overlord! Vanillaware takes risk in offering new IPs and new gameplay formulas, yet it always succeeds, this time straight away.

great placement for UO and PPS. feels like the Switch carried UO a bit, but it could be the nature of physical and digital on different systems

Nice performance for all the new games. Rebirth didn't fall too bad though being surpassed by Dragon's Dogma does suggest underperformance even if we discount the Twin Pack sales. Unicorn Overlord being absent from the other charts suggests it was predominantly bought on the Switch.

As always a big thanks to Welfare for the presenting the info. I'm a little bit surprised that Switch is still above Xbox in unit sales, i expected that Switch would be dead last in the U.S by now.

Unicorn Overloard being only 2nd on the Switch chart confirms ATLUS is doing the right thing by skipping the platform entirely with their in-house games.

Based on just the YOY revenue declines, I'm seeing

PS5: <530K
NSW: <250K
XBS: <210K

Not where these console actually are for an estimate, just what they look to be below

So the estimates that 7Rebirth is somewhere between 2-2.5 Million WW is most likely correct considering Dragon's Dogma 2 is above it in the YTD chart.

To give an idea of Final Fantasy VII Remake LTD, This is what sold Final Fantasy VII on PS1 as of November 30, 2002:

Units: 2.43M

Edit: wrong revenu number.

Based on just the YOY revenue declines, I'm seeing

PS5: <530K
NSW: <250K
XBS: <210K

Not where these console actually are for an estimate, just what they look to be below

At this rate Switch could have it's first <100k months between May and September.

Random thoughts:

  • Hardware continues to slide. The market needs a price cut.
  • Helldivers 2 continues to be one of the biggest success stories of the year.
  • NGL, I'm surprised that Dragon's Dogma 2 is already above Rebirth for the year, especially with Rebirth having a whole extra month on the market when the report was closed.
  • Nice top 5 for Ronin.
  • We live in a world where Unicorn Overlord charted 8th in its debut month. There is still hope for humanity.
  • Horizon saw a nice jump in March.
  • PlayStation is still dominated by GAAS looking at the monthly user numbers.

Based on this line
Mobile accounted for 89% of the total year-on-year growth in video game content spending during the month.
We can determine that almost $300 million more was earned purely off of mobile. Based on the monthly numbers Sensor Tower gave early this year, we can estimate approximately $1.66 billion of the software content total is mobile revenue.

Guessing Peach might've ended up on the YTD chart -- if not above Ronin -- if we had digital numbers to go along with it.

Here is why tracking still sucks and probably forever will.

MLB is #1 grossing on the Playstation chart, but not even in the top 10 on the MAU chart
MLB is nowhere on the Xbox grossing chart, but #10 on the MAU chart

Completely diametral thanks to digital sales not being tracked outside of Playstation and the inclusion in Game Pass
Game would've easily be #1 overall if all was included.

So for March 2023 i have

PS5: 660K
NSW: 340K
XBS: 280K

A 30% decline for each would mean

PS5: 460K
NSW: 240K
XBS: 195K

Of course the lower price of each console versus last year will bump the unit sales up. Does anyone have a rough estimate of the price difference between this March and last March for each console?

Could you give your average selling prices per platform? I don't see why the maximum for PS5 would be 530k, considering the huge price difference to last year.

Considering Vanillaware had been relatively absent as a Nintendo supporter for most of their history, Unicorn Overlord's western success feels like one of the more notable instances of a third party game benefitting greatly from a day-and-date Switch version. I'm very curious how a game like Persona 6 might do if it's a Switch 2 day-and-date title (provided the console ends up having a similarly strong audience base).

It always surprises me how much 7R's popularity overperformed in NA. It was also pretty popular in the U.K. and Japan considering the circumstances, but I don't think it would be #2 in dollar sales in the U.K. would it? How much did VIII and X sell for at launch? Is it possible the dollar sales are obscuring it? Then again if it's above 3 million in the U.S. probably not.

The video game console hardware market is still cyclical, and we are in the very late life stage for Switch while both PS5 and XBS are post cyclical peak. The Q1 declines are a bit sharper than I expected, but not alarmingly so. Shrug.

Switch helping out Vanillaware a lot. Looks like their future games will include Switch/Switch 2 as day and date with the other platforms.

Ronin did better then I thought. Great news.

Rebirth is most likely between 2-2.5million copies sold. Makes sense why there's no PR, sold less then XVI.

MLB is the silent hero here, doing very well on PlayStation and high engagement on Xbox/Switch (silly to not track digital sales of these platforms cause of the different pub but ah well).

And of course, Helldivers 2, still #1 YTD. What a success story.

Hardware wise, not good for any company, (though PS5 between 400-500k?? is not terrible) but Switch still outselling Xbox is impressive.

"Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth currently ranks 14th across all Final Fantasy releases in lifetime dollar sales in the US market. Final Fantasy XV is 1st all-time, followed by Final Fantasy VII: Remake and the original Final Fantasy VII."

"Standard. The dual pack is its own thing."

UK is a very price sensitive market - outside of hardcore fans not many are willing to spend full price for these games at launch. In the US, thanks to the brand awareness and the accepted price point for big games it provides the perfect environment for games like 7 Rebirth. Its clear that that has been the most important market for them.

The placing for Unicorn Overlord on PS5 (#11) and XBOX (#19)

Very solid overall - even on Xbox. Great to see, go VW.

PS5: $530 in 2023 -> $435 in 2024

Xbox might be same price, since last year Series X was supply constrained and Series S discounted to $249

Nintendo: no idea

Outside of the official announcement of the Switch 2, is there any reason why monthly Switch sales should be expected to decline by 50%+ from March to May-Sep.
That seems like a very dramatic drop. Of course Switch 2 announcement might make it drop, but that much?
Because May-Sep is a smaller period for HW sales.

For exemple Xbox one went from 244k in march 2017 to 109k in May 2017 while PS4 went from 397k to 187k.
In 2019 Switch went from 383k in march to 216k in may.

The reference I use for Switch this year is Xbox 360 2013 (because it's the 8th year for both)

Xbox 360 2013:

Jan: 281k
Feb: 302k
Mar: 261k
Apr: 130k
May: 114k
Jun: 141K

So far Switch is selling lower for each month.

PS5: $530 in 2023 -> $435 in 2024

Xbox might be same price, since last year Series X was supply constrained and Series S discounted to $249

Nintendo: no idea
Really, that big of a difference? This would put PS5 in the 550K range, although this would be with a 30% decline in revenue and it could be slightly more. The combined decline is 32% and the minimum is 30% so they likely all declined between 30 to 35%.

How accurate are their trackers for MAU? It's really weird for MLB to be nowhere to be seen on the Playstation chart when it ranked #1 in revenue.

"Helldivers II remains the best-selling premium game of 2024 year-to-date after placing 2nd in March. Helldivers II currently ranks 7th in lifetime US dollar sales for Sony published titles after just two months in market."

1. Ragnarok
2. GOW 2018
3. TLOU2
4. Spider man
5. Miles morales
6. Spider man 2/GoT?

7. Helldivers

Helldivers 2 is well on its way to become number 1 in dollar and unit sales in USA for Sony game.

Yeah i would assume they need a big summer showcase to stop or slow down that trend. If they showcase what they have in store for the fall - while also already confirming that the next system is gonna play and support current Switch software - might be enough to keep things afloat until the Holiday season. Where we could see more aggressive pricing/bundles compared to the last years.

Really, that big of a difference? This would put PS5 in the 550K range, although this would be with a 30% decline in revenue and it could be slightly more. The combined decline is 32% and the minimum is 30% so they likely all declined between 30 to 35%.
Yeah, because PS5 was discounted to $449 Disc and $399 Digital all month, with a ~60:40 split.
Meanwhile in 2023 the God of War Ragnarök bundle at $560 was still dominating, with barely any Digital Edition offered.

So yeah, would result in ~550k for PS5.

and I'm capable of betting on it being #1 revenue-wise due to the MTX money.

"Just because I'm seeing some chatter... the Final Fantasy VII Remake & Rebirth Twin Pack is tracked separately from Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth. However, even were all Twin Pack sales allocated solely to Rebirth the year-to-date sales rankings would not change."

My estimates for the month

PS5: ~525K
NSW: ~235K
XBS: ~205K

The big news here is, Dragon's Dogma 2 with only 11 days worth of sales managed to outsell Rebirth with over a month worth of sales.

Similar YoY % decline for all systems is another weak showing for the Series. March 2023 was when the PS5 was in stock normalization mode so you'd expect this month to be one of the roughest comps for it this year in that respect.
