Fun fact:

In 2023, 101K units was enough to make it into the French retail top 20 by SKU (GfK data)

This is less than what you need to enter in the Nintendo DS top 20 in 2007.

Overall 12,35M physical games were sold last year including 6,79M Switch game (I don't have PS and Xbox numbers).

Here is 2021 for reference:

Packaged software sales estimates by IDG Consulting (I've got only the percentage of the total):

PS4: ~4.26M
PS5: ~0.99M
XBO: ~0.43M
XBS: ~0.14M
3DS: ~0.14M

Total packaged software sales: 14.21M

These numbers are differents from CESA (despite both quoting IDG) who had this for 2021 and 2022:

For this kind of game I think the safest bet is more Spain than France.

Also France for some reason don't like Persona/SMT as much as the rest of Europe and more important 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim was not really that big.

That context probably misslead Koch Media which is understandable.

In SMTV's defense, it released in the middle of CoD, Sport and Pokemon season, and GoWR.

The main issue back then is that it miss Switch top 3 ranking while Spain, Italy and even UK had it as the best selling Switch game of the week and it was also less popular at eShop than elsewhere in Europe.

I revised my numbers since the last time I post this due to some new sources.
Now I have Hardware for 1998-2003 from Screen digest who show that PS1 strong 1998.

For GEN 7 numbers there is sometimes variance between sources:
For exemple one source claim NDS 2008 at 2,25M while an Nintendo interview claim 2,4M...

France overperform for PS5 last year.
It was the first time Sony sold more consoles in France than UK.
(For Nintendo it's the case evry year since 2012)

Due to these strong PS5 hardware sales France overperform for Hardware in general:

UK (GfK) : 1077M€ (convert from 934M£)

2023 Hardware units:

FRANCE (estimate) : 2,6M
UK (GfK) : 2,605M

Note: Unlike France Retrogaming consoles are not include for UK so the difference is slighty bigger.

I'm pretty sure it's the 1st time the top 10 was just NSW games right? Damn Playstation being bodied at retail in a very physical heavy market is a sight to see.

To provide further context on why Bayonetta 3 is there: big discounting is the reason.

It's probably the same reason why Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope charted that high as well.

Even then, we're looking at 8 out of 10 placements in the chart being occupied by Switch games without significant discounting activity.
There can be reasonable explanations behind this, such as the fact that a significant share of software sales for Switch in France comes from retail and Nintendo's and Switch's strength in the French market but...that sure is a sight, especially this late into its lifecycle.
