What future for the Switch in 2025 and beyond?

Overview Discussion (122)

Yeah, I do feel like this is a deck clearing for the OLED. A year from now they might be just producing Lites even.

They had it in Europe, whereas it was MK8D in the US during the Holidays.
Sure, but it certainly wasn't present in the 2 largest console markets in the world where it would have had the most impact in that sales period, so it looks to me like an unforced error.

Definitely feels as if the release schedule is the thinnest it has ever been for the mighty Switch. It’s certainly not Wii U level dry - Xenoblade, Capcom Collection, Neo Geo Collection 3 & 4, Kunio Kun, Cotton are all titles I’m looking forward to but it does feel as it the fire is dying.

Nintendo does really do "free" bundles in Japan, they never got a Mario Kart bundle for instance, so the argument only holds true for the US.

Agreed, that's why a Direct would have made sense. At least, we'll get significant news about Legends in a few weeks.

One last "no Switch 2 information will be shared in this presentation".

It is announced!

30 minutes focusing on Switch 1, in 24 hours from now.
Dang, it's actually happening. Hopefully that Fire Emblem 4 remake finally happens.

on March27, as I told you!
still convinced it will have few first party contents, way more third party games ("normal" + indie)

last chance for a number of oft rumored games like Fire Emblem and the Zelda Duo. still think Metroid is a toss up. I'm still erring on it being at next week's direct. Pokemon could be here with a short reveal, but I'm not counting on it. thinking that will be advertised on its own

I just hope we get that Fire Emblem remake, it's been so long since we've had a proper Fire Emblem game...

Honestly the "Switch 2 Edition" is the perfect solution to continue Switch 1 games while showcasing Switch 2's strengths.

I'll be honest, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond was one of Switch 2's most impressive games from the reveal last week. While it's still in essence a Switch 1 game with that generation's assets, that allows it to utilize Switch 2's technological strengths like 4k resolution or 120 frames per second.

While Switch 2 will absolutely punch above its weight in some great ways, we really wont see many 4k or 120fps output on current games. Switch 2 will have to make some some concessions to get these games to work. We're already seeing compromises to big games like Cyberpunk. Docked it'll be running at variable framerates (25-30) and variable resolutions (up to 1080p). This is still awesome, and with the game still being optimized (and potentially allowing cross progression) I'm really considering double dipping from my PC version. But the point is that demanding games (even if 2077 is five years old, holy crap it's five years old?!) will keep Switch 2 humbled when it comes to lights out framerates and resolutions.

But Switch 1 games? They can really hit their stride on the new system. Already Prime 4 and BotW/TotK look amazing, and are justifying the work being done to make them shine. It's a great way to fill in software gaps for Switch 2 while still providing games for Switch 1 owners to enjoy (and potentially upgrade when they get the successor system). It's a win-win for Nitnendo... and fans too. Good stuff.

Honestly excited to see what game gets the "Switch 2 Edition" treatment next.

I'm personally interested to see which 3rd parties go back to do Switch 2 Editions. The one that immediately jumps out is Marvelous. They have the most announced outside of Nintendo. With Titanic Scion coming in September, I could see a DxM1 patch. Personally hoping for an NMH3 one as well with whatever other content, but that's more wishful thinking than anything.

I just want to point out that unless most of the stock for regular Switch is already in the US, after 8 long years with no price cuts, the Switch 1 might finally kick the bucket with a price hike due to tariffs.
