Honestly the "Switch 2 Edition" is the perfect solution to continue Switch 1 games while showcasing Switch 2's strengths.
I'll be honest, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond was one of Switch 2's most impressive games from the reveal last week. While it's still in essence a Switch 1 game with that generation's assets, that allows it to utilize Switch 2's technological strengths like 4k resolution or 120 frames per second.
While Switch 2 will absolutely punch above its weight in some great ways, we really wont see many 4k or 120fps output on current games. Switch 2 will have to make some some concessions to get these games to work. We're already seeing compromises to big games like Cyberpunk.
Docked it'll be running at variable framerates (25-30) and variable resolutions (up to 1080p). This is still awesome, and with the game still being optimized (and potentially allowing cross progression) I'm really considering double dipping from my PC version. But the point is that demanding games (even if 2077 is five years old, holy crap it's five years old?!) will keep Switch 2 humbled when it comes to lights out framerates and resolutions.
But Switch 1 games? They can really hit their stride on the new system. Already Prime 4 and BotW/TotK look amazing, and are justifying the work being done to make them shine. It's a great way to fill in software gaps for Switch 2 while still providing games for Switch 1 owners to enjoy (and potentially upgrade when they get the successor system). It's a win-win for Nitnendo... and fans too. Good stuff.
Honestly excited to see what game gets the "Switch 2 Edition" treatment next.
