• Akira Toriyama passed away

Let's all commemorate together his legendary work and his impact here

Updated sales numbers for Switch titles: Super Mario Bros. Wonder (11.96M), Super Mario RPG (3.14M), and more

It's legs won't be anywhere close to as good. 4.5M maximum I'd say.
Shit, at 4.5m it might just barely eke out over Bowser's Inside Story for the best selling traditional Mario RPG

I'd expect it to tap out at the low range of 4 million though, which is still a huge success all things considered

What do you think about MP4? Could MP4 hit that bar maybe?
I could see Prime 4 hitting 5 million but even if it does reach the top 100 it won't be there for very long

Sales expectations typically differ across franchises. Donkey Kong Country is a bigger franchise than Yoshi platforms. I'm sure Nintendo was expecting a bit more, however Tropical Freeze sold a third of Returns while Woolly World sold "only" half of Yoshi's Island DS.
Because the team behind Yoshi wanted to make another Yoshi game, the team behind DK didn't. We know a DK game was in development at VV and got canceled. You have no evidence that TF flopped other then vibes because sales results don't reflect that.

We almost never have evidence that game flopped, unless publishers specifically say so. But selling 2m for a franchise like Donkey Kong Country, to me, looks like a flop coming from an entry selling 6m+.

But it did later sell well with the Switch re-release, so i hope that leads Nintendo to see that there is a future for new Donkey Kong games.

Considering that DK is being used in their theme park expansions, I would imagine that they (Nintendo) would want to make new DK games regardless of how TF sold on the WiiU.

Scarlet & Violet is now the third best selling Pokémon game of all time, passing Gold & Silver

Hey Serebii, could you tell me what your source for the Platinum-number is? I've been searching and I can't find the number anywhere. @Celine has the game at 7,6 mio, but if you have more up-to-date numbers and can source it, I'd gladly include it in my sales overview. Thx!

I find it incredibly hard to imagine it's only going to sell a little over 1.25m more copies throughout the rest of its lifespan considering what it did in its first 6 weeks. This is a Mario game.. look at the list above, so many on there that are many years removed still did another 500k in this past quarter. Switch 1 games will have some legs after the Switch 2 comes out (regardless of when that is), so I really cannot see it totally falling off a cliff.

This is an RPG, not a platformer or kart racer. Paper Mario: The Origami King fell off even way more.

I guess we'll see, but there have been countless Paper Mario games over the years -- that was just another in a long line of them and not particularly special. Mario RPG is something that people had been clamoring for for literally decades and is a lot easier to recommend. I understand using it as an comparison tool, but I don't think you can just assume it will replicate it. Time will tell!

Pikmin is a great example of how investing in a once-niche series can pay off. I don't think we're waiting a decade for Pikmin 5.
Feels like a lost art. I dont think any modern publisher would insist for 4 games on a franchise until it finally becomes a hit. With higher risk associated with each individual project and more finance-leaning suits in leadership, a developer would probably be shifted to licensed IP or a support studio if they couldnt make the first one a hit.

The percentages are not fully accurate with some games where we got the full worldwide sales updated but not the Japanese sales because they didn't sell over 1M in the FY. Sword/Shield and Let's Go in particular.

I like to see a update list of the best selling games off all time in Japan.
I think the Nintendo Switch overtake the Top Ten already.

This list doesn't include last quarter, but there shouldn't be much difference in the top 10 once it's updated:

And you can get numbers as of last December in the FY report:

Scarlet/Violet is under 200k away from surpassing Red/Green in Japan? That's.... terrifying, actually. That series record has stood for so long I wasn't sure it was going to ever fall

a worthy champion, IMO. might make it but I suspect slowdown will be heavy this year unless they have some new pokemon additions through updates

  1. [NSW] Animal Crossing: New Horizons - 11.20m
  2. [GB] Pokémon Red/Green - 8.22m
  3. [NSW] Pokemon Scarlet/Violet - 8.04m
  4. [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Dekuxe 7.95m
  5. [NSW] Super Smash Bros Ultimate - 7.48m
  6. [GB] Pokémon Gold/Silver 7.17m
  7. [NSW] Splatoon 3 - 6.99m
  8. [NES] Super Mario Bros. - 6.81m
  9. [NDS] New Super Mario Bros. - 6.49m
  10. [NSW] Pokémon Sword/Shield - 5.95m (+)

Nsw has managed to have 5 games in the top 10, with 3 guaranteed top be top 3. Smash bros has another 750k to go to surpass PokeRG. Not impossible but not likely.

Splat3 could do it if splat4 releases in 3years. Needs to avg 400k a year roughly

i was talking about splatoon 3 the other day and how it was interesting that it shifted even more in japans favour, but… looking at this list it seems like japan in general is just much better at showing up for sequels. there’s a big disparity between sw/sh -> S/V and botw -> totk, with japanese sales really overperforming for the follow ups. even mario party swung a bit more in japans favour with the sequel, and it’s not the same but nsmbu -> wonder was a huge shift. so it’s not just a splatoon 3 thing at all.

is software in general doing better in japan later in the consoles life?? or is it just japan being a bit more of a hardcore audience
