Huge achievement for Vanillaware.
Do we know how up to date are the numbers ?
Vanillaware lives to see another day, hooray.
How does this compare to their previous releases?
Sega/Atlus own it. Same as Odin Sphere, Dragon's Crown or 13 Sentinels.Great result, especially after the somewhat slow burn that 13 Sentinels was (still a success in the end), but i think this will give VW the needed negotiation power to tackle or justify their next projects as well.
While we are at it - does Atlus/Sega own the IP or VW themselves ?
Thanks, but thats disappointing, i really hope they can negotiate at least some co-ownership or something for future games. Developing these quality games for so many years and still not owning any IP is disappointing. Especially when you hear stories about how they struggle with project budgets from time to time.Sega/Atlus own it. Same as Odin Sphere, Dragon's Crown or 13 Sentinels.
Great, Vanillaware is long overdue for a breakthrough success. 50% of 13 Sentinel's sales already, simultaneous global and multiplatform release strategy has, to no surprise, worked well!
Hopefully they consider a PC port.
Well, the video IS unlisted, so clearly something's afoot.(maybe it wasn't public?)
Safe to say the vast majority are on Switch. I asked my local GameStop in Canada and they said virtually everyone that asked for it was specifically after the Switch version. And we already have seen how dominant the Switch version is in Japan.
Wouldn't shock me if Switch was like 400k or even 450k of that total.

Strangely enough, the western version of the video, which is more recent, does not mention 500k at all.
Maybe the game hasn't sold 500k yet but they were expecting it to reach that milestone based on sales projection/trends and they uploaded the video as unlisted early. Where did you find the video by the way? It's not even featured on the official website, but it has too many views for it NOT to have appeared somewhere public.
This had somehow been missed but the Japanese version of Unicorn Overlord's Accolades trailer uploaded a week ago(maybe it wasn't public?) confirms it has sold over 500,000 copies worldwide.
Well for a small developer like Vanillaware selling 500 000 copies of a game is like selling millions of copies for bigger developers. This has to be the strangest sale milestone announcement ever.
Near me (a small part of Atlantic Canada), as far as I could tell, my local stores have -only- stocked/recieved the Switch version.Safe to say the vast majority are on Switch. Probably means how lowkey the milestone was shared and that it didn't even hit us until a week later.Well for a small developer like Vanillaware selling 500 000 copies of a game is like selling millions of copies for bigger developers.
As has been already brought up in this thread, since the only evidence we have is an unlisted video (as in, this video is not meant for public viewing), I don't think the milestone has actually happened yet. Or at least, I'll wait until Vanillaware/Atlus/Sega actually make a public announcement.Probably means how lowkey the milestone was shared and that it didn't even hit us until a week later.

To commemorate the release of this work over 500,000 copies worldwide,We have released the "Accolade Trailer" which includes comments from various European and American media
I don't know about you, but prior to playing the demo I wasn't sure an Ogre Battle game would crack six digits worldwide in 2024. I think this result is a resounding succcess for Vanillaware and the genre as a whole.Happy for the numbers, but sad for the numbers. It's one of the best RPGs released this generation and deserves much more. I hope it continues to sell well and generate a lot of income for Vanillaware.
So that's what, the first 3 weeks (or even 4 if going by usual tracker weeks)?Yup, looks like the milestone might be as of March 31st (or whenever they started running the trailer as an ad). Still an astounding result, especially as legs are poised to be strong given the positive wom.
Whoa hey whoa hey hey whoa whoaMatsuno has blessed us this day
No, I'm referencing the tweet he made about getting UO to a million sales, but slso the fact that he is the patron saint of Ogre Battle and therefore this is only possible through His grace.Whoa hey whoa hey hey whoa whoa
Did Matsuno touch this game? He's probably my favourite RPG writer, the idea that he'd put hands on something so explicitly inspired by Ogre Battle is setting my brain on fire

God I would lose my absolute mind if this could convince Square to license out Ogre Battle, even just for one gameNo, I'm referencing the tweet he made about getting UO to a million sales, but slso the fact that he is the patron saint of Ogre Battle and therefore this is only possible through His grace.
He replied on Twitter that working on a new OB or TO is nearly impossible nowadays and recommended people to buy UO as a way to support the next generation of tactics RPG.Whoa hey whoa hey hey whoa whoa

Indeed, this should be a staple to be honest. It even increases your emotional attachment to your save data, and therefore the game, which is ultimately good for the publisher.I'd say the demo certainly helped here. I know I wouldn't have bought it otherwise.
On that note, it's nice that it has become more common that demos are the first few hours of the actual full game where you can carry over your save data instead of the old style demos where you play a small bit and at times some basic functions are even locked, so you couldn't get a good feeling for the game.
Easy fix, just have two demos! If Asano can get away with it, they can too.The only tricky part is that for save data to transfer, the game's release should be right around the corner (~1 month). So it is not always possible especially when you want to time it with a Direct (see DQM3).
Demos cost resources and time that the developer doesn't always have enough of, and money. Not 100% certain about this last one, but I am under the impression that same as getting an advertising slot, the platform holders charge for demos in some way.Easy fix, just have two demos! Direct + demo. This game caught my eye and ear in the Direct. The demo finally convinced me to buy. I'm now 40 hours in.I'd say the demo certainly helped here. I know I wouldn't have bought it otherwise.
