Week 10

First tidbits / additional infos

Full reports

As expected, the Mario title to rise above the rest was Mario Kart 8 Deluxe which, with a boost from the release of the Booster Course Pass Wave 4, managed to glide its way onto the podium this week landing in third place. There was also a good showing outside of the top ten for Super Mario Odyssey which made its way into 13th (up from 26th) and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe which moved into 15th.

With this week's data only counting up until 11th March, we imagine that these titles will continue to rise up the charts as the MAR10 Day sales continue.

Elsewhere, Metroid Prime Remastered continued to prove popular this time around, falling slightly from its impressive launch last week but winding up in fourth place nonetheless — even more impressive when we consider just how long the digital version of the game has been available now.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, on the other hand, saw enough of a drop in sales this time around for it to fall out of the top ten and into 11th place.

The Push Square report is here as well - https://www.pushsquare.com/news/202...egacy-immovable-while-wo-long-falls-25-places

It really does seem like nothing will topple Hogwarts Legacy for the time being. The game hasn't budged at all from its position atop the UK's physical chart, and it continues to sell the vast majority of its boxed copies on PS5 (83 per cent to be precise). While some big new release will likely come along to kill its combo, we imagine Hogwarts will stick in the top 10 for the foreseeable.

Let's hope for the GI.biz's piece for some w-o-w increases / drops now.

Have to wonder where HL is going to end the year, 1 month later and still #1 at least in the UK, seemingly in most countries, do we have a contender for GTA (first year sales) on our hands or is this just a case of not much competition and it'll peter off eventually?

It's is a shame that Metroid prime remeastered released at the end of the fiscal year because we will get one quarter of sales data then nothing for quite some time.

It needs much longer than a month, especially since it released outside CY Q4, to be considered something like GTA. It needs to at least stick in the top 5 for the next few month for that level

Gameindustry article is up !

Last week's highest charting new title, Metroid Prime Remastered, drops from No.2 to No.4 with a hefty 79% fall in sales week-on-week.
The dream is dead. Well actually this was very much expected, the physical sales last week were from people who'd resisted buying digitally just to get a physical version so makes sense there's a big drop-off from that first week rush. Will be interesting to see if it stabilizes from here though.

That's a roughly 3k second week for 17k physical total.

Also Hogwarts now over Elden Ring, damn. If its a like-for-like comparison with the methodology used in the year end report then that means it is now certainly over 865k and probably close to 900k total.

UK Sales: Week 9, 2023 (Feb 26 - Mar 04)

  1. Hogwart's Legacy - 10.500 / 223.500 (-31%)
  2. FIFA 23
  3. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  4. Metroid Prime Remastered - 3.000 / 17.000 (-79%)

It's still quite good for the title. I'm actually fairly impressed with MPrime's physical performance.

Absolutely, I was expecting more like 3k for the first week. Its extremely impressive and very encouraging.

If Hogwarts is at 223K physical, that means digital represents >642K sales. That is quite the split.

I think only RE4 has a chance of dethroning Hogwarts this month. Otherwise it’s likely to be an evergreen title in the UK that people pick up alongside their ps5 or Xbox.

RE4 and Jedi Survivor but i guess, HL will stay in the top 5 for a couple of months.

GoW? But that's actually cross gen. However ps5 sales made up the bulk.

Yeah, i think the interesting part is the fact that hogwarts staying number one must mean there are a lot of consoles being moved with it.

I think RE4R could have done well as a current gen exclusive

PC is a notably much smaller market in the UK than it is in most other European countries.
Where you getting that? UK is Steam's #2 market globally.

Edit: Ack, that's publishers globally. Here's current Steam stats for traffic (UK is second in western Europe behind Germany):

Ah that's my fault for the vague language used; I meant smaller in terms of percentage of market share. In other words, a lot of European countries have a much larger share of the video game market being PC-oriented, whereas the UK has a relatively very strong console market that is quite larger than PCs.

Sure but in HP's case it's irrelevant. The game's not available to the majority of the console market yet and Steam is almost certainly a much larger addressable audience than just PS5/XBS.

For some perspective, 30% of Elden Ring launch sales were from PC in the UK. Wouldn't be shocked to see a similar percentage for Hogwarts Legacy, maybe a bit lower.

I'm guessing that Hogwarts Legacy has a similar platform breakdown to that. I'd guess that platform breakdowns are PS5 > Steam > Xbox. I think many AAA games have that breakdown except ones that are very PC dominant like Cyberpunk

I think Elden Ring had a slightly higher ratio on pc also

I’m actually surprised the split is that narrow, I always thought it would be bigger seeing as how Xbox usually makes up ~20% of launch week sales at retail in the UK for big games. I guess Xbox owners favor digital even more than I thought they do.
I mean the model with more sales is 0% retail, of course it's got a crazy digital skew.

Considering how supply constrained the PS5 was and how available the Series S was, the fact it's still that big of a gap is actually kinda damning for Microsoft.

With the PS5 now being readily available I expect the percentage to move in Playstation favour even with the Series X being readily available as well in the UK.

Yeah the UK and US are two important markets where Xbox presence never dropped too low, even during the One era.

People who buy a Series S are probably not the same people who would spend more money for a PS5 or a Series X.
