UK 2023 Sales Data: Hardware, Software, and Accessories numbers

It says that it includes didgital sales from PSN, XBL and Steam.
The charts that these software numbers are based on in the source document don't have anything like that said there. It specifically says "physical games"(mind you these percentages are about £-value and not units, in units the Switch was still slightly ahead):

"Combining disc sales across all
the available platforms under the
Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft
umbrellas, 2023’s ‘Battle of the Brands’
saw Sony maintain top spot. The
combination of rising PS5 disc sales
and declining Nintendo Switch sales
helped Sony increase its share of
the market to 49% of total physical
games spend, with Nintendo falling
back to 41%. Microsoft share of the
market continues to slip, falling from
11% in 2022 to 10% in 2023."

Although I have to ask @Astral_lion02, where did you get the separate PS4, PS5 and XOne and XBS numbers from? I couldn't find that.

Hardware / Accessories

2.6 million games consoles were sold during the year in the UK, according to GfK Entertainment. That's a rise of 8.8% over the year before.

PS5 was the driver behind this. Sony's console saw sales rise 55.2% over 2022, making it the biggest year yet for new PlayStation. It's actually the best year for a PlayStation machine since 2014.

The other console to post year-on-year growth was, interestingly, PS4. Sales of PS4 were up 633% year-on-year. Like with PS5, this is due to severe console shortages that plagued PlayStation consoles throughout the year prior.

Elsewhere, Nintendo Switch ended the year as the No.2 console, but sales are down 16.7% over the year before. This is the Switch's seventh year on the market and a decline was expected.

Narrowly behind Switch is the Xbox Series S and X, which saw sales drop 14.2% over the year before.

Over in accessories, 11 million products were sold at UK retail in 2023, a drop of 4.5% over the year before, despite improved console sales.

Over 40 million video games were sold in the UK during 2023.
It's a slight increase of 2.6% over the year before, with EA Sports FC 24 continuing where FIFA left off as the UK's best-selling video game.

Despite Electronic Arts taking the seismic decision to not renew their license agreement with FIFA last year after a 30 year partnership meaningthey had to drop any reference to FIFA in the game title, sales of ‘EASports FC 24’ were not materially affected, with the 2.4m units sold being comfortably enough to take the No.1 position in the chart and selling less than 135k fewer units than what ‘FIFA 23’ did last year. The digital share of those sales increased from 61% in 2022 to 67% in 2023.

It was another strong year for Warner Bros. After securing the No.4 best-selling UK game in 2022 (LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga), the company has gone one better with Hogwarts Legacy, which easily beat Call of Duty to No.2.

The Harry Potter spin-off was also the best-selling physical game of the year. It had a protracted release, with the PC, PS5 and Xbox Series S and X versions launching in February, the PS4 and Xbox One editions arriving in May, before reaching Nintendo Switch in November.

At No.3 in the charts is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Although it was billed as a full sequel to 2022's Modern Warfare 2, fans felt it was more like an expansion, which may explain why its console sales are 36% lower compared with the previous year's game. Modern Warfare 2 was also on sale a little longer, having launched in October, whereas Modern Warfare 3 arrived in November.

EA Sports FC 24, Hogwarts Legacy and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 all had marketing partnerships with PlayStation, and over half of those games' sales were on Sony formats.

It wasn't the strongest year for new IP (unless you count EA Sports FC). The highest charting new IP released last year was Starfield, which reached No.31. The best-selling new IP of 2022 was Elden Ring, which reached No.3. Elden Ring is at No.28 in the 2023 chart.

Nearly 14 milion physical games were sold in 2023 a decline of 5% YoY. Annual growth in PS5 and Xbox Series software sales was not enough to offset steepening declines in spend on physical games for the Nintendo Switch and other sales for the market’s legacy consoles.

@Astral_lion02 thanks!. Platform splits shows XBS still get respectable share with digital included.
Xbox is the platform that move all digital.
That's really something to kept in mind when we see the very low retail shares on weekly boxed charts.

However these splits still looks like a noticable decline from Xbox one era not helped by the combinaison of Xbox Series underperforming, Game Pass and PS marketing and bundles for severall games.

It's interesting that this year Microsoft finaly start to share digital for the Switch version of Minecraft.
20,5% for a title that is very very strong at european eShop rankings show that europe Switch digital even in the UK is way smaller than in Japan.

UKIE published its latest Consumer Market Valuation Report, showing that the UK games market was worth £7.82 billion in 2023, a 4.4% increase compared to 2022's revised total of £7.49 billion.

The figures

  • UK games consumer market value: £7.82 billion (+4.4% year-on-year)
  • Software sales: £5.18 billion (+4.1% year-on-year)
  • Hardware sales: £2.22 billion (+2.1% year-on-year)
  • Revenue from film, TV, and soundtracks based on game IPs: £124 million

The highlights

While overall game sales were up in the UK in 2023, boxed sales have continued their decline and were down 5% to £495 million compared to 2022. Looking at digital sales more precisely, digital console software sales were up 5.6% to £2.48 billion, and digital PC software sales increased 4.5% year-on-year to £684 million. Mobile sales were also up, reaching £1.52 billion following a 4.5% growth.

When it comes to hardware sales, consoles had a particularly strong year, with sales increasing 12% compared to 2022 to £951 million. PC, on the other hand, showed quite a decline, with sales decreasing 11% year-on-year, falling to £673 million.

Omdia senior analyst James McWhirter gave a bit more detail: "Digital spend within the UK's console market returned to growth in 2023 as PlayStation 5 hardware sales volumes hit their stride, while Nintendo Switch remained remarkably resilient as a bumper lineup of first party software propped up active users and spend on the now seven-year-old platform."

He also noted the success of games including Diablo 4, Hogwarts Legacy, Spider-Man 2, Super Mario Bros Wonder, Tears of the Kingdom, EA Sports FC 24, and Baldur's Gate 3, which all contributed to the health of the market.

Dorian Block, from data firm GfK Entertainment, added that the decline in boxed software sales was actually "better than expected," due to strong releases and the "Zelda effect" on Switch. He added that PS4/PS5 boxed sales overtook Switch sales in 2023 in the UK.

"Total sales achieved a higher overall [average selling price] than any other year on record (£36 overall)," he continued, still talking about boxed sales. "This was achieved by the fact that there were 17 major titles in 2023 that remained above £50 over the entire year (accounting for 34% of 2023 revenue), compared to just 8 titles in 2022 (accounting for 21% of 2022 revenue)."

Meanwhile, accessories sales grew 3% to £402 million, and VR hardware sales increased 11% to £194 million.

UKIE's report included revenue coming from digital film and TV based on video game properties for the first time, creating a new vertical the trade body called the "broader game culture sector," including toys, merchandise, books, magazines, film, TV, soundtracks, events, and streaming content. This sector saw a revenue of £418 million in 2023 in the UK.

Revenue from games soundtrack as well as TV and film adaptations reached £124 million in 2023, while events revenue surged 140% to £10.3 million – a success UKIE attributed to events including Pokémon Go Fest and Apex Legends Global Series.

UKIE CEO Nick Poole, commented: "Once again, the report showcases the vitality of interactive entertainment in the UK in the face of significant challenges."

He acknowledged both this "positive trajectory" but also the layoffs affecting the industry, and reiterated UKIE's commitment to support the UK games industry.

He added: "The video game industry continues to evolve rapidly, presenting both challenges and opportunities. As we continue to see changing patterns of consumer behaviour in how people buy and play games, these figures give us real confidence that games will continue to pioneer tomorrow’s frontiers in entertainment, learning and participation."

My post was ipdated with the latest informations.
Sadly no exact data for handhelds PC.
Console hardware data went from £934M including only playstation, Xbox and Switch to £951M with others hardware.
I still exclude PC hardware and things like "Revenue from film" on the table of General market data.
