It was considered one of the hardest record to beat. We just got the official confirmation from Nintendo today that the Switch overthrew the Nintendo DS as the best-selling console ever in Japan.

  1. Nintendo Switch - 33.34m (as of December 2023)
  2. Nintendo DS - 32.99m
  3. Game Boy - 32.47m
  4. Nintendo 3DS - 25.26m
  5. Playstation 2 - 21.98m
  6. Playstation Portable - 19.69m
  7. Famicom - 19.35m
  8. Playstation - 18.86m
  9. Super Famicom - 17.17m
  10. Game Boy Advance - 16.96m
Historic moment!

This is the record that more than a few people have been expecting to be beaten since about a year or two ago. Now we see where it lands worldwide, which is still a bit of an open question.

The crazier part is that it's not done selling. When it's all said and done it will have taken the number spot with room to spare.

The original Switch will go for the 35M bar.

I can't wait for the successor to be unveiled so we can assess its potential as well.

Can I have the exact source please? :)
On the Switch total in Japan:

Page 9: https://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2024/240206e.pdf

On the other platforms sales (Switch sales are not up to date there):

Switch:
Consoles - 33.34m
Games - 232.73m

Previous records:
Consoles (NDS) - 32.99m
Games (NES) - 225.86m

Most games sold too.

10 years ago things were bleak. PS4 was an uncertainty. Vita and Wii U were dying on their ass. 3DS was a moderate success but anything breaking records seemed like a relic of a bygone era. Rooting for Level 5 to keep the industry fresh and expecting predictable sequel decline for nearly annual Monster Hunter games. Evergreens were also rare at that time iirc.

What a fucking turnaround. Bravo.

So glad the last piece of hardware Iwata signed off on saved Japan. Nothing less would do him justice.

Making history right now. Well deserved and biggest turnaround that I remember.
Gamecube -> Wii was riskier but this one should be more stable.

Massive accomplishment, kudos to all the devs, programmers and engineers that made this possible.

We kneel to the GOAT. The True King Switch has finally take down the old King DS and seize his throne for himself.

Now he is going to expand his lead as much as possible to ensure his successor switch 2 can't come close to him lol.

I was thinking Switch will sell at least 36M in Japan (lifetime), but now I think 37M is more likely.
Truly incredible! :D

Impressive milestone, especially given the state of the japanese market and how well the DS was doing.

I remember way back when comparing the Switch weekly progress to the DS seems like a comparison to how nobody can match up to the gaming emperor. Now, the Switch has finally overlapped the final boss. Such an impressive achievement for the soon 7 year-old hardware.

it is even more impressive if we look at the actual 2024 sales (that are on top of those official numbers, basically) - because it's sales curve surely is declining, but compared to the same period of the DS weekly sales...they are 10x better
who knows where it will land at, at the end of its life cycle..

Yup, it is especially impressive because most expected a couple of years ago it would be a photo finish, instead, it's going to sell like 4-5 mill more than the previous best lmao.

I really love this meme. I saved it to my phone just now and I’m going to use it as a screensaver. I’m very happy with these results.

Truly historical achievement. It broke both the HW and SW records at the same time. And one of those was standing for over 30 years!!

Thanks for this post, which gives much needed context. What Nintendo achieved with the Switch was truly unimaginable a decade ago.

Do we have PS1/PS2 software sales in the region? I guess those would be pretty high too.
Historic moment for the japanese console market thought with a little asterisk for software due to Sony releasing sell-in software figures only for the whole Asia continent for PS1 and PS2 (Australia may have been included with Asia).
If NSW software sales in Japan are already above the PS2 figure for Asia, for PS1 the situation is still unclear (not that it matter much, NSW total software sales in Japan are still increasing at a good pace).

PS1: 286.00M (sell-in as March 2007 by Sony for whole Asia continent, may include Australia too)
PS2: 228.00M (sell-in as March 2007 by Sony for whole Asia continent, may include Australia too)

Nintendo Switch is truly an once in lifetime achiever.

Yup, saw your post in the MC thread, it is very likely for Switch to also have the Software record if we count digital only titles, and it might surpass PS1 without them soon.

If switch still gets 3m seller like tomodachi i think it will happen with physical alone there.

We’ll it’s not physical alone, it’s physical and digital for games with a retail release, and I don’t think it needs any other big sellers, it should have enough gas just by regular releases and evergreens to sell another 40M the rest of its lifetime, given that PS1 is at 286 for Japan + Asia, I would say it’s pretty likely for Switch to pass it with just physical and digital of retail releases.

Congratulations, Switch!

However, I will truly celebrate it only when @Hiska-kun 's Famitsu-graph has the lines of Switch and NDS cross ;P

All hail the King 👑. I know we've made the joke before but it is a Merry Switchmas

Worldwide is still up in the air but can't wait to see what pans out.

Kinda thought the DS record was unbreakable, but now I think the Switch record is unbreakable.

It should still do a few more million units. Really crazy when you think about the price disparity.

We were here when Nintendo Switch made history. Utterly incredible achievement, and well frigging deserved.

And they've done all of this while the hardware is the current available system with zero price cuts. No "legacy sales" whatsoever have been accounted for yet.
