The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Pre-launch Watch [Mark review content in Spoilers]

totk_1270x720.jpg

Welcome everyone !

As you may all know, the release of the Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is merely one week away. It is promised to become one of the biggest launch of 2023, and more generally speaking, for Nintendo and gaming in general.

There are other threads to predict how much TotK will sell. Here we'll focusing on gathering pre-launch data and info on the game. There are many things to look out for, here are a few examples:

Digital preorders

They are starting to be taken into account on the eshop today, so feel free to share any insight on your regional eshop. The quicker it takes the top spot, the more promising it is. Also, you can also see where it lands on the All-included chart that goes beyond paid software and rank each SKU with free software like F2P games or YT. For TotK, this is probably the most insighful metric.

Online stores preorders

Don't hesitate to share, especially if the game faces sellouts. This includes ComG!

Stores animations and pictures

Since the game is a huge event, retail stores are likely to be dressed for the occasion. It is always interesting to share it as that would drive in-store organic sales. Also, if there are some Nintendo reps mobilized for the occasion, don't hesitate to tell!

Example:

Retail and Digital marketing

This can either be TV spots, digitals ads, an overview trailer, bus/trains dressing, press covers ... everything that shows how big the marekting push for the game is, in terms of reach and scope.

Reviews

While this doesn't have the vocation to be a classic "Review thread", discussion on the aggregate score and from the outlets with the highest reach is encouraged. If some elements in the reviews are interesting in terms of sales impact you can mention them, but with the Spoiler tag.

Do not look away, you are witnessing the birth of a new thread. This will be our last line of defense, before we get our eyes on your sales, Link.
And don't hesitate to contribute ;)

You can't escape the hype train for this game. Great idea for a thread.

As I'm from the UK I'll try and report as much as I can on UK stuff.

I'll start by saying I'm not sure I've seen a game do this well pre-release on Amazon UK before. It's been locked to #1 on videogame bestsellers ever since the trailer a few weeks ago, except for when it was sold out for a few days and Star Wars Jedi overtaking it for about a day on its launch day.

I'm expecting very strong numbers.

I'll also stick my neck out and predict a 96 review average score for this one.

Just started preloading like 20 mins ago in the French eShop, I managed to not get too hyped while waiting but now it’s all I’ll think about in the next 6 days, haha. Guess it’ll very soon appear in the ranking.

This game is going to be massive, so excited to see how it’ll performs, I still remember BotW Switch at launch selling more copies than actual Switch, haha.

Only 7 more days.

I can't wait to be three days away and see the infamous Majora's Mask countdown memes popping up.

TOTK has just overtaken the £10 PSN gift card to be #3 for 2023 so far on amazon uk. One spot behind Hogwarts Legacy PS5.

In the ES+PT eShop it's #1 among paid software too, and #9 when including free software and apps. Not a bad start at all!

Do you guys think this outsells Super Mario Odyssey (currently 25M) and Scarlet and Violet (currently 20M) once it's all said and done?

The Mario movie will boost everything Mario, Pokémon S&V is going to sell well over 30M (I could be wrong, let's see January-March shipment in a few days). I would be surprised if TOTK came out on top. Can it beat Odyssey? Maybe. Pokémon? Doubt.

My voucher was redeemed at approximately noon EST and it it currently the #1 on the US eShop above both YouTube and Fortnite.

In Italy right after midnight was #2 on paid software and #8 in all software (Mario Odyssey was the only 1 above it)

As soon as it appeared on the German eshop charts and preloading started it was instantly #1 in both the paid and total software rankings. An impressively strong start.

On amazon.de it's been #2 behind Playstation Store giftcards for many weeks now except when it was sold out for a day or two and dropped to #3 behind Xbox Live giftcards.

All y'all saying this stuff, how's the comparison looking compared to let's say PokeSV 🤔
It's almost impossible to compare to that given it had two different games counting for it and it was in the much busier November period. I'm also not sure we tracked that game as closely as this one.

This is the first bit of reliable chatter I've seen on what reviewers are thinking of the game, I'll spoiler it for those who don't want to see but it's pretty much nothing and just a vague general statement:

From shinobi602 posting on Era: https://www.resetera.com/threads/pl...member-commander-zavala.700273/post-105284593
It’s gonna be interesting to see if it manages to recapture that magic of BoTW. I’m skeptical but it’s certainly the most hyped game of the year by most metrics
No doubt there. From reviewers I've spoken with, it sounds like it runs circles around BotW.

Ive been staying away from pretty much all pre-release impressions of the game but since you framed the spoilers as being relatively tame and general and me trusting you i went ahead and clicked.

Hnnng...cant wait for next week.

From r/TearsoftheKingdom, some advertising across cities. Is this typical for Nintendo's big releases?

Metroid Dread had some big stuff like that but I don't think it was that much.

Asking everyone: Can we please make it a thing that all spoilers, even from reviews, are put in spoiler tags? Reviews will probably mention a lot of things that a lot of Zelda-fans would like to find out themselves by playing the game. And please don't go decide what is spoiler-worthy or not for others. It'd be nice if we could talk about the scores without spoilers. Using the spoiler-tag isn't that hard anyway.

That's just my opinion though.

Here is what the OP says about the reviews

Amazon and Mediamarkt/Saturn dropped the price to 59,99€ in Germany. Great for me, but I wonder why. I payed 69,99€ for BotW six years ago there.
