The Game Freak Thread: Pokémon, New IP Etc. [Update: Nintendo Survey]

Would it be likely that Gen 10 doesn't arrive next year and we get PLZA DLC instead?
No, there's no way Pokemon let's it's 30th anniversary pass without a Gen 10 announcement. Besides it'll have been 4 years since Scarlet and Violet, which is the longest gap between new generations since Gen 4 to 5.

Ah okay.

I don't think we should assume there will be Gen 10 in 2026 (alhough i definitely want it), we could get another remake to celebrate the 30th. ZA needed extra time to bake according to the leak, so that makes me worried about a new gen being ready. I also wouldn't rule out the Pokemon Company keeping the 3 year cycle because this gap might just be due to a new generation.

Given that Game Freak seemingly have not adjusted fully to Switch tech, i wonder if it will take a good while for them to adjust to Switch 2 and its more modern tech, with ray tracing and such stuff being possible on Switch 2.

If there was something else, I'd figure we would have saw that in the leak. Instead GF and the cartoon team are already planning for Gaia

Very true, you really just helped me feel better about gen 10 in 2026 lol. I was really worried when late 2025 became the release date for ZA.

If gen 10 is cross gen that would mean the first new generation exclusive to Switch 2 will release in 2028, unless they somehow go back to 3 years between gens for the game that probably requires the most time yet. I just can’t see it happening lol
You mean 2030, not 2028. I don't see them taking only 3 years again. Dev times keep taking longer.

I guess it would be like GS still releasing on the old GB in B&W, but also having a GBC version with color. And then some kind of remake or Legends 3 would be the first NS2 exclusive game in 2028.

Though Ruby Sapphire did come out on GBA about a year and a half after the system's launch in Japan. If gen 10 releases at a similar time frame and assuming a June-ish launch for NS2, a year and 8 months later would put it...at February 2027. Which would still be just in time for the 30th anniversary. And DS lite launched less than 2 years after the original, so it's not impossible that they take less time for NS2 lite.

I could honestly see it being cross gen or exclusive. Both scenarios are possible.

I think the decision on making Gen X Switch 2 exclusive will ultimately depend on how much the console sells in 2025.

The game was probably developped first on Switch so they should have a potential build working on it.

Now, it is such a crucial release that it is really difficult to say.

Price of Switch2 will give a first indication.

For as long as Gen 10 will be on the market, it'll grow with the system. I'd say bite the bullet and cut off Switch 1 owners. If they want to still play with the new pokemon, there's Champions

What I'm curious about is if this could be the start of a reintroduction of Mega evolution to the series as a whole, it's always been an incredibly popular feature that pretty much every subsequent generational gimmick has failed to recapture the magic of. People like the simple idea of their favorite Pokemon getting "super" forms more than weird gigantic or crystal forms I think.
They’ve should’ve just peppered them through like they are doing w/regional variants that way they never would have to reintroduce them.

Slight diversion from the discussion... but I just had to say how much I'm loving Pokémon Concierge.

It's one of the most adorable things I've watched in ages. I'm just working through the free episodes on YouTube at the moment, but it's got me hooked already and I'm really hoping a game eventually comes out from the project. Get Good-Feel onto it, using Yoshi's Woolly World or Kirby's Epic Yarn as a base.

Interesting detail: the TCG will end the "Scarlet & Violet" era when the first set dedicated to the Mega Evolutions debuts later this year.
This is usually not case as the debut games of the generation give the name to the TCG sets until the next generation comes.
Probably a result of the generation lasting 4 years instead of the usual 3? Or a sign of TPC giving more relevance to PLZA?

Great news for my wallet, my collection of SV Blackstar promo cards will end soon
Not sure why Pokébeach only just noticed that as that was literally in the reveal

Even the English PR mentioned it
In 2025, fans can look forward to the new Pokémon TCG: Mega Evolution Series of expansions

This isn't the first time they've done it though. They did it in Gen 4 when HGSS dropped with the LEGEND series. Heck they did it changing DP to DPt as well. They did it in Gen 6 with BREAK

weird how there's nothing on the movie front for years. there were some projects in the leak, but I assume all of those are dead by now since they were dated to years ago

In which case, I imagine there's a solid chance Iwao is directing Gen 10. Definitely a surprise if that does end up being the case. Ohmori's still pretty young, I really thought he'd do one more generation before passing down the torch.

I don't see a reason for Ohmori to step down yet. We still don't know who's leading project Bloom or Champions o GF's side

Given that Game Freak seemingly have not adjusted fully to Switch tech, i wonder if it will take a good while for them to adjust to Switch 2 and its more modern tech, with ray tracing and such stuff being possible on Switch 2.
The days of adjusting to each new piece of hardware because each console had its own set of technology and features is over, it's all become very streamlined nowadays. Making a Switch 2 game won't be any different from making a Switch game.

Nintendo survey on Pokemon
Nintendo (ie; NOA) recently sent a survey out to a bunch of folks asking for their opinions on ZA and recent Pokemon games. I took the liberty of noting the questions down whilst answering the survey. (Note that this wasn't under NDA or anything of the sort.)

• Which of the following Pokémon games, if any, have you ever played regularly? ("Regularly" meaning more than once or twice) - They listed the recent games and spin-offs

• How important are each of the following elements of a Pokémon game to you? - Five options from not very important to very important
  • Battling friends and other players
  • An engaging story
  • Art style
  • Challenging gameplay
  • Character customization
  • Brand new Pokemon
  • Trading Pokemon with other players
  • Graphics and technical performance
  • Catching and collecting Pokemon
  • Region/setting
  • Interesting characters
  • Battling Pokemon and Trainers
  • Choice of first partner Pokemon
  • Freedom of Exploration
  • Revisiting nostalgic characters/places from childhood experiences
  • Innovations to the classic Pokemon gameplay
  • Gameplay that requires strategy and planning

• Have you heard anything about Pokemon Legends Z-A before today?

• Please briefly describe where/when you first heard about Pokémon Legends: Z-A. What was your first impression?

• Has that impression changed since? If so, how and why?

• Where have you seen information about Pokémon Legends: Z-A? Select all that apply - Typical options inc. social media etc.

• You mentioned that you've watched videos on social media about Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Which type(s) of video do you typically watch for gaming news and information? - Asking about long-form videos or YouTube shorts

• How interested are you in buying Pokémon Legends: Z-A? Please select the one that is closest to how you feel right now. - Five options

• Why are you uninterested in purchasing Pokémon Legends: Z-A? - I assume this one changes depending on your response

• Which of the following elements of Pokémon Legends: Z-A are you aware of? Select all that apply. - A lot of options listed, such as Lumiose City being the setting, Mega Evos, Wild Zones, Real-time battles, Sneaking... and "Graphics and technical performance" again

• How likely are you to purchase Pokémon Legends: Z-A based on the following elements? - Options using the above elements

• Which of the following do you regularly participate in? ("regularly" meaning more than once or twice) - Basically, how much do you engage with the competitive scene, anime, merch etc.

• What other releases/news are you most excited for when it comes to Pokémon?

• Select below where you think you fall on the topic of following the gaming industry. - Five options that go from rarely keeping up to being very informed

• Select below where you think you fall on the topic of when you learn about the games you want to play. - Five options ranging from early on to closer to launch

• Select below where you think you fall on the topic of asking advice about video games and systems. - Five options ranging from asking others for advice to being an expert that others come to for advice

• Are you a parent to a child aged below 13 in your household?

• Are you currently playing games on any of the following devices? Please select all that apply. - Usual list of consoles, PC, smartphones

• In a typical week, how many hours of video games do you play? Please include play time across all your gaming consoles (including Nintendo Switch).

The two things that stood out to me about the survey were:
  • "Graphics and technical performance" being listed in multiple questions as things people are aware of, and like/dislike
  • They were trying very hard to get a feel for what kind of gamer you are—more casual or more of a "core gamer" that keeps up
On the whole, it felt as though they were asking some very pointed questions to try and paint a picture of why Pokemon discourse is the way it is. Obviously very subjective, but I couldn't help but feel as though this survey was designed so they could show it to the powers that be and go, "Okay, this is why Pokemon needs to sort itself out."

I'm not sure how they picked their participants either. The only Pokemon game I've personally spent an extended amount of time with on Switch is Arceus, so that could be a factor. (Although, I'd imagine they went for a fairly wide spread)

Unlikely, they always change directors for games that aren’t new generations even if one of them is well received, they have been doing it for a while - but new generations are much more fixed

I didn't receive the survey despite playing all the games so they seem to be targetting less engaged players with it.

Makes sense since those would be the less vocal about their issues with the series.

I would expect surveys to be randomly sampled. Just targeting people who play fewer games or have negative opinions won't tell you anything online discourse already tells you. With SV doing gangbusters, it's just as important to find out the why when online discourse about the game is so negative

Yeah I'm screwed.

I'm legit looking into building an extension on my house now because I'm out of room
im sure your house should be renamed to THE POKEMON MUSUEM.

Holy shit i seen collections before (gaming and cards in general) but wonder what the hell your working with lol

We've had to put some in storage because we're out of room

you need to make a thread for next year 30 year anniversary and show it off online! or Post it on your site, off topic but im hoping gen X will be huge and overtake the originals in terms of sales. I feel like iwth the nsw2 and pokemon overall becoming even more popular, that it might happen. Hell it did it in japan with SV.

When do yall think we get PLZA news next? pokemon presents in AUG?

Didn't expect a trailer in this Direct but the game looks good.
And I'm glad the elemental monkeys are in this game. 6 more confirmed Pokémon for my Living Dex.

ZA gets a Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade and Scarlet and Violet will get a free update. Gonna be interesting to see what those look like.

This feels like the first time Nintendo's influence over Game Freak got used, because i think its pretty clear that Nintendo must have insisted to Game Freak to make a Switch 2 version of this game.
