Switch million-sellers: gotta list'em all

Member
The objective of this thread is to try to build collectively the list of every games that reached 1M LTD worldwide on (and only on) Nintendo Switch. The purpose is to update this post every time it is needed. Note that I try to provide sales figures as well and I display the last known figures. So Total Sales figures are a minimum.

I propose to take into account every possible games (even digital only) and to consider distribution figures when provided. For multiplatform games, only Switch figures must be considered.

GAMES PUBLISHED BY NINTENDO

First, let's begin by the easiest: the million sellers published by Nintendo. We have a pretty good idea of this list, thanks to Nintendo Financial results. But we may still miss some of it, as they usually only communicate when a game reach 1M in a given fiscal year. I am aware of the very good installbase thread that list every million sellers published by Nintendo, for every hardware. The scope is a bit different here. Here is the list I have for games that are published (at least somewhere in the world) by Nintendo. For example, Fire Emblem Three Hopes appears here as it is published internationnaly by Nintendo.

MISCELLANEOUS

Actual number: Confirmed Million Sellers (80) + Candidate (24) =103
For comparison sakes, Nintendo confirmed that the Wii had 103 million seller titles and the DS had 139 as of March 2011 (Nintendo IR)
Also, as of December 2022, Nintendo announced having 994M switch games distributed. At this point the known total sales of Million sellers 534M. The only thing we can say, is that there are less than 460 unconfirmed Million Sellers. Of course, it is a very large upper bound^^

TO CONCLUDE
Here we are, I hope you will enjoy it, and that we will be able to fill this list with many games to come. I will try to update this post anytime it is necessary. Do not hesitate to make remarks/comments and to post information about sources, sales figures or anything else I may have missed. And last but not least, if you create or update a "milestone" thread on the site, please post the information here as well. Thank you !

Shovel Knight Treasure Trove is coming in hot on that number.

Back in December 2019, Yacht Club said 25% of all sales of the game were on Switch. Without knowing if that percentage increased or decreased, if you use that and look at how SK:TT was just a little under 3 million units sold as of March 2022, that'd be about 750K sold on Switch at least and would greatly depend on how those percentages look 2 years later. But since Switch was the platform that it was selling the fastest on since launch, the likelihood that the percentage increased is pretty good.

Either way, it's one to watch to see if it crosses the threshold.

Thanks for the thread @ChartsJapan

I'll have a list coming relatively soon but you can already add the FIFA games to the list, as well as the Crash Bandicoot trilogy as likely million-sellers.

Since Nintendo gives a figure for million-sellers per FY, we can cross-reference it that way.

You can also include Bravely Default 2 since we know it sold 950k before the PC version. Monster Hunter Stories 2 and Monster Hunter Generations ultimate are in the likely category too.

Super Bomberman R should be a million seller. It was ported to other platforms before it hit 1m, then 2m combined so we don't have a confirmation of the Switch version passing 1m alone, but just its confirmed 500k from 2017 + Japanese retail sales since then give us a floor of 790k.

There's a lot of games I'm curious about.

Spiritfarer hit 1m Dec 2021, for all platforms. I always see it on the eshop charts. So, I wonder how much it's sold for Thunder Lotus at present?

I'm sure Cult of the Lamb will eventually sell a million, too.

Hades
Dead Cells
Ori 1 and 2
Unpacking

And these.

MHGU is definitely a million seller but we won't ever get official confirmation because they just report combined sales with the 3DS version.
MHS2 is very likely one too, same goes for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy.

Question @ChartsJapan: When did Nintendo report Brain Training's sales in an IR? CESA has it at 1.2M as of the end of 2021, not 1.5M.

Also small correction, Clubhouse Games is at 4.22M.

Witcher 3 probably hit a million on switch. All I could find was this which suggested a 660k launch window.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is obviously a million seller on Switch.

We already got confirmation of W3 sales data by platform from CDPR

Thanks for the thread @ChartsJapan

Since Nintendo gives a figure for million-sellers per FY, we can cross-reference it that way.
But the same title can sell a million multiple times over, right? Would auch a title (typically, Stardew Valley and Minecraft) be counted again and again ? If so, then I don't know how precisely we can use that metric.

Regarding Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, ¿Does million of unique players count as sales?

It depends on the game. The things that add players over sales are used game sales and whenever the game was given for free. Kingdom Battle had a NSO Game Trial in July 2022 so that would inflate player counts. We have the 7.5 million player count in June 2021 so that can serve as a baseline. I'm unsure of how the used game count is for Kingdom Battle but, I think we can say at least 6 million copies sold but, probably higher.

Stardew Valley is assuredly a million seller on Switch. It recently hit the 20 million milestone and though we don't have a platform breakdown, we do know that 13 million copies were sold on PC, leaving plenty for Switch.

Back in april 2018 Nintendo mentioned in the yearly briefing that Stardew Valley was almost at a million units sold just 6 months after release - so it's all but confirmed that it reached it in the nearterm.

Also as a bonus they mentioned in the same briefing as SV that Overcooked had sold more than 500k units so that's also one of those titles that most certainly reached 1M units sold.

But the same title can sell a million multiple times over, right? Would auch a title (typically, Stardew Valley and Minecraft) be counted again and again ? If so, then I don't know how precisely we can use that metric.
You are right.

And by using this metric, that would be to guess for every FY the exact titles that fits into that.

I have three candidates for the "Likely to be million seller lists":

1. Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy

From the GamesIndustry.biz report, there are a four third-party games that sold over 500k copies in Europe in 2019:
  • Minecraft
  • Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy
  • Mario + Rabbids
  • Stardew Valley
Since Minecraft and Mario + Rabbids are already the list, and there's plenty of discussion on Stardew Valley above, I'll focus on Crash Bandicoot.
Announced during a Nintendo Direct, it is one of the most requested games on Switch and it wasn't even on the table originally until a lone engineer ported the game's first level to Switch, proving it was feasible to port the entire trilogy. The last reported sales is from Activision's Q4'18 report which mentioned that it sold 10 million units across all platforms, and I would say it is extremely likely that it sold more than a million on Switch alone.

2. Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town

One of the fastest-selling title published by XSEED games for a single platform in North America alongside Rune Factory 4 Special. The game reached 1 million units sold across Switch and PC as of November 2021, as announced by XSEED during their EGS launch of the game.

3. Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin

Initially announced for PS4 and PC, Nintendo reached out to secure a Switch version of the game, and it seems like the right call - launch orders on the Switch was about a 2-to-1 over PS4. The game that was originally planned to sell 30K copies hit 1 million units sold across Switch, PS4 and PC as of June 2021. Since then there were multiple marketing opportunities like spirits appearing in Super Smash Bros Ultimate, and as a DLC in Pioneers of Olive Town, making it a likely candidate to be a million seller.

The Switch is the system with the most million titles with at last 1 million mark?
In Nintendo ecosystem I think yes, so….

One thing is certain: Minecraft it’s the best selling third party game on the Switch.
Another games that can achieve 1 million copies: Skyrim, Doom (all off then), and maybe Sega Genesis Collection.

i'm always surprised how that 2 million number for kingdom battle gets posted everywhere and the source is always traced back to a davide soliani tweet about shaving his beard, but then ignoring one of the top replies where he says it had nothing to do with the game's sales. obviously the game game has sold way more than 2 million at this point but this is just a case of a bad source being repeated so much it's accepted as fact.

It seems like most people don't read past the first tweet and don't understand what btw means.

I would put the Ace Attorney Trilogy in the likely category as well. The game is sitting at 1.9 million and from the Capcom leak over 2 years ago we know Switch was almost 50% of all sales (and that was before it hit 1 million)

Okami HD may be getting close too. It was 600k after around a year and a half going by the Capcom ransomware thing and the top selling console version of the game.

GAMES THAT ARE LIKELY TO BE MILLION SELLERS
The most difficult task arises here. The idea is to list games that are probably million sellers on Switch but nothing was explicitely announced:(
I begin with a few games I have think of. You can reply to this post with your games and sources and I will update the list or add more recent/releevant information.

It's been talked about over and over again in the Media Create thread since last year. Here's the latest post. It's not just hit one million, it's actually over 1.3 million by now :)

The sequel on the Nintendo DS is great too!

I have no idea about this game but on Amazon Carnival Games for the Nintendo Switch has 22k reviews alone. Anybody have any idea how this game has done and if it could be over one million?

Gear.Club Unlimited franchise has 1 million between 2 games as of 2 years ago. It's almost always on sale.

Thanks everyone for your answers, your proposals and you remarks. I will go through all of it gradually :)

I have just made a few updates :
  • Correction of mistakes from the Nintendo table (thanks @BTB123 )
  • Addition of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt to the base of confirmed million sellers (thanks @enpleinjour @SkyerIst @Malden )
  • Addition of a column "as of" in the Nintendo Base. Will do the same for the Non-Nintendo one
I still have a lot of games to go through. When you provide sales figures can you please try to provide your sources (when you can), it will make my task much faster.

Thanks again, and let's continue like this !

Looking into Nintendo's financials, here's the number of the million-sellers with a retail release per FY. Only the copies not published by Nintendo are considered 3rd party.

Fiscal Year 2017/2018

12 million-sellers (including 3 from 3rd parties)

- Mario + Rabbids
- FIFA 18 ? Skyrim ?
- Minecraft ? (not counted here because no retail release)

Fiscal Year 2018/2019

23 million-sellers (including 8 from 3rd parties)

- Mario + Rabbids
- Minecraft
- Monster Hunter GU
- FIFA 19 ?
- Crash Bandicoot

Fiscal Year 2019/2020

27 million-sellers (including 9 from 3rd parties)

Fiscal Year 2020/2021

36 million-sellers (including 14 from 3rd parties)

- Monster Hunter Rise

Fiscal Year 2021/2022

39 million-sellers (including 13 from 3rd parties)

- Monster Hunter Rise

Fiscal Year 2022/2023 (1 quarter left)

27+ million-sellers (including 8+ from 3rd parties)

Thanks for the reminder. Added links, added more context and corrected myself, SK:TT was nearing 3 million as of March 2022, so it’s likely past that now.

You can add Just Dance in most of these.

New update:
  • Addition of a column "as of" in the Non-Nintendo Base.
  • Addition of Stardew Valley to the base of hypothetical million sellers (thanks @DCSales )
  • Addition of Bravely default II to the base of hypothetical million sellers (thanks @Astrogamer )
  • Addition of Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove to the base of hypothetical million sellers (thanks @Terrell )
  • Addition of Crash Bandicoot Trilogy to the base of hypothetical million sellers (thanks @Night )
I will continue this way step by step.

@Lelouch0612 Thanks for your message about the number of 3rd party million sellers in Nintendo FY results. Is it possible to have the detail quarter by quarter in your message? I know it requires some work, but it would be great to have these info. I would add it in the initial post on this topic. That could be use to deduce some million sellers or to have some boundaries to the number it exist (even if some may be counted multipled times). Another point about I am not sure is the fact that full digital games are not taking into account in the Nintendo counting. Does anyone have the source? I remember that it was not clear in the Nintendo presentation (at least to my understanding).

Is this the most million sellers a Nintendo system has had in a while? What about third party million sellers? Is this the first time a Nintendo system has had this many?

Lots of LEGO games could be ahead of 1M:

- LEGO City Undercover (sold mode than 1M on both Wii U and 3DS, in 2017 LEGO city undercover (all version) sold more than Marvel Super Heroes 2 in the UK, released very early on Switch life).

- LEGO Harry Potter collection (More than 82k retail copies sold in France (on Switch alone, as of jan 2023), very frequent at eshop and UK retail charts).

- LEGO Jurasic World (good presence at eshop and UK retail charts).

I know The Battle Cats Unite! has sold more than a million units, but cant find the link right now. But it's confirmed as of september last year, will try to find the confirmation later on.

Overcooked! was over 500k back in early 2018 and should be at a million

Other food for though, back at GDC in march 2019 Nintendo shared the top 10 best selling Indie titles:

Stardew Valley
Hollow Knight
Overcooked 2
Undertale
Dead Cells
Enter the Gungeon
Graceful Explosion Machine
Celeste
Golf Story
Overcooked

At the time, Shovel Knight was confirmed to be at 370K units sold on Switch and it was not on the top 10 list so all the above are confirmed at least at 370K units as of march 2019.

Also would like to add another game that hasnt yet been discussed because it's a slamdunk

Disney Dreamlight Valley

Launched in September;
E-shop rank EU

Sep: 1, 6, 15 (3 different SKUs) Ahead of Splatoon 3 on launch month
Oct: 1
Nov: 5
Dec: 5
Jan: 10

Only bested by Pokémon, Switch Sports and Minecraft during the holiday season

You can also include Bravely Default 2 since we know it sold 950k before the PC version. Monster Hunter Stories 2 and Monster Hunter Generations ultimate are in the likely category too.
About Monster Hunter Generation Ultimate, I just found out that :
If I am not wrong, I think we have a new confirmed million seller ! What do you think? Did I miss something?

I have noted in my spreadsheets that we at the old place had MHGU/XX at 1.2M as of 31 December 2018. So with that in mind, I think your calculations are correct.. it's definitely a million seller no matter.
