Sales Overview for Nintendo-franchises

Yahoo,

little preface: After I made an ass out of myself half a week ago in an unnecessary Xenoblade vs Fire Emblem-"debate", I left with frustration, mostly because I simply hadn't known better what the games of the Fire Emblem-games really managed to sell. When I tried looking up those numbers, I found that there was no place that gives you a quick overview of these sales numbers, at least with reliable numbers for a source; pretty much all websites out there use vgchartz, which is terrible. At that point and because I both wanted to argue more facts-based in the future as well as have quick access to these numbers, I decided to work on such overview myself. What that means: I spent the past couple days composing a simple list of all the popular Nintendo-franchises, used trusted sources that are recommended by Install Base, and put everything together. There's nothing fancy about this list, just some brute forced compilation of games put together by franchise and sorted via WW sales numbers. Maybe some will find this list useless and maybe I'm blind and someone else did this already (altough I surprisingly couldn't find anything), but for me, the list that I put together is exactly what I need when I think "damn, I'm not entirely sure about making that statement, if only I knew what these Nintendo-games really sold!". And maybe there's other people out there interested in a quick resource like this.

With that out of the way, here's a little bit about my methodology:
- primary source used: Celine's Nintendo sw-and-hw threads for WW and Japanese sales numbers
- secondary source used: Game Data Library, for when the above didn't offer Japanese numbers; also for release dates
- tertiary sources: Nintendo sales reports, this came in handy for some newly released titles that aren't yet part of Celine's latest update; also Media-Create data as well as CESA White Paper
- in one sole case (Switch Sports), I used Famitsu-numbers, because it's a newly released title and none of the other sources got anything as of yet; this will be updated with the above sources whenever possible
- I generally tried to pick all main entries in these franchises; if you find that some title is missing that should be there, please tell me
- numbers are in million units and up to the 2nd digit behind the comma, following regular rounding rules; sole exception: Wii Sports Club for Wii U which barely sold 3k and I didn't want to round down to "0"
- Important Note: These numbers represent the latest known sales numbers; it doesn't mean, however, that WW and Japanese numbers are from the same date. Due to different sources for WW and Japanese numbers, there can be an undefined amount of time between these numbers (for example: Game XYZ sold 10 mio units WW as of today, but only 2 mio in Japan based on three years old Famitsu-data. The Japanese sales continued during those three years, but we haven't gotten any sales-update. That's why these numbers shouldn't be used to present some sort of sales ratio between WW and Japan, like "Game XYZ sold 12 mio, but Japan only makes up 17% of sales", unless you know both numbers stem from around the same time.)

Final words: I hope some of you find this list a little useful, I know I'll take a look at this thread in the future before making statements about sales of certain franchises ^^ This list is not complete, as you can see plenty of gaps in there. I couldn't find these numbers using the above mentioned sources. If you know about any missing sales numbers and can provide a reliable source, I'll gladly add these numbers. Also, if you find I completely forgot to include certain Nintendo-franchises, pls notify me about that, too, and I will see to add those numbers. I'm not a sales professional like all the well-known Media-Create thread veterans, so please excuse any shortcomings. And now, let's get to the list:

Great resource. Also Super Metroid's sales are a crime. Might be my my personal favorite Nintendo game along with Super Mario World.
My biggest surprise was that Super Paper Mario apparently is the best selling Paper Mario-game. Really makes me wish Nintendo would re-release Paper Mario 2 to a bigger audience. :>

Super Metroid sales were great for the game it was on the SNES, sales of non-Mario franchises were quite low during the SNES era. Most non-Mario games (or related) 1st party games are in the 1-4m range during that era

Wow...As much as I prefer home consoles I have to say that Switch is a beast. Dat multipliers over some franchises older releases.

I have a few suggestions:
I think it would be more logical to put them in order of release date.So it can be easier to follow how the series develops
It confuses me that 2d mario and 3d mario are together
New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe and Bowser Fury is not on the list

- Added Bowser's Fury, thx!
- I wanted it to be easy to see what sold most, so that's the sorting reason. I'm not sure if you can just copy and paste it in a document and sort it yourself. Otherwise I'll do an optional "sorted by release" post in the coming days here in this thread :) I plan to make graphs sorted by date anyway, that's why I included the release date ^^
- the purpose was to have the "main" entries of each franchise together and Mario World is for the SNES as main as Mario 64 for the N64. But here, just for you:

Actually it is more understandable if you do it on a graphic, I just didn't think to show it with a graphic. Thanks anyway
maybe i missed something or i don't understand but I think New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe for switch not on the list

A few corrections:
BotW is at 28.25M and Twilight Princess at 8.85M.
Super Mario Odyssey is at 23.5M and NSMBUDX is at 13.31M

I recommend the Wiki articles for the best selling games of each console. They are all up to date with all publicly available data.

These three in particular with the most recent CESA info.

Edit: Just so you know, Celine didn't update the numbers in the Nintendo sales data thread.

Your first Wikipedia link says BotW sold 26,55 mio. The source is the latest financial report, but the only number in there I can find is 25,8,, plus 1,7 for Wii makes 27,5. Can you help me how Wikipedia gets that 26,22mio number? I'm happy about any support here, but I'm only using 100% reliable numbers.

Mario Odyssey numbers also are at 23,02 in the sourced financial report.

26.55M on the Switch and 1.7M on Wii U. The financial report you're talking about is not the latest but the one with data up until December 31st 2021. The latest is up until March 31st 2022. The Switch Wiki article has the Financial Results Explanatory Material as source for several games there.
"Financial Results Explanatory Material Fiscal Year Ended March 2022"
Look for this source in the Wiki article, the small numbers in blue. Your source is outdated since like I said, Celine did not update the Nintendo data thread. These Wikis are pedantically correctly and reliably sourced. You have no idea how difficult it is to get any edit through.

This is where the Twilight Princess number is from.

Thx. Your wikipedia link cites an outdated financial report with 25,8mio; the latest report has the 26,55mio figure. Since I'm primarily using the numbers from Celine's fantastic threads, I haven't yet included those numbers from the latest report. I'll update this in the coming days.

As for the TP figure, I'm not 100% sure whether that 8,85 number refers to Wii+GCN sales, or also includes the HD-remaster. The latter is am entirely separate release that I'd rather include separately in the list. Are you skilled enough in Japanese to tell which one is the case?

Per DeepL:
Boasting the largest number of units in the "The Legend of Zelda" series with cumulative worldwide sales of 8.85 million units(*), "The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess" will be revived in full HD on the Wii U.

*The combined value of the Wii version and the GameCube version as of September 30, 2015. In-house research.
So these are GC + Wii sales of TP. Twilight Princess HD Wii U isn't included in these 8.85 million units.

My phone translated it for me:

"The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess", which boasts the largest number of "The Legend of Zelda" series and has sold 8.85 million units worldwide (*), will be revived on Wii U in full HD.

* The total value of the Wii version and the GameCube version as of September 30, 2015. In-house research.

Wii and Gamecube versions. This was publicised right before the HD version.

As for the Wiki sourcing, the link was supposed to go to Nintendo's website that I linked in my previous post with the top 10 of all consoles after the DS. Someone must have made an error.

Very nice topic!!
Anyone have a guess about the total of the Mario series sales?
I think is already mark the 800 million (counting digital only titles on Virtual Console).
It’s difficult to ranking some franchises, because if a game don’t reach the “1 million copies” mark, kinda disappeared in some lists.
F-zero, it’s a great example of that.

The original Pilotwings is missing.
Thx, I didn't even know there was a SNES-Pilotwings ^^ Already added it to my list, will update here once I added some more games. Currently working on Animal Crossing, then Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. And then I'll have to figure out what to do with all the one-offs like Odama, 1-2-Switch, Kobey Bryant NBA, and so on :>

One particularly franchise that’s deserve more appreciation is the “Excite”.
Excite Bike, Excite Bike (Disk System), Excite Bike 64, Excite Truck, Excitebots (awesome game) and the Excite Bike for the WiiWare service.
Also, there’s a version in 3D for the 3DS.

There some obscure Nintendo franchises with only one game, like: Devil World, Urban Champion, Ice Climber, Mach Rider, etc.

I mean I'm sure his goal isn't to use every game Nintendo ever made, because if you wanna go there I can pull out Duck Hunt, Hogan's Alley, etc., and ain't nobody got time for that lol.

Nice job compiling all this.
I did notice the the below is missing:
Pokémon Brilliant Diamond / Pokémon Shining Pearl - 14.65 million

I know, but when he mentioned titles with only one appearance (like Odama and 1-2 Switch) I think maybe he is going in that way.
It’s a very hard job.

Added Star Fox, Animal Crossing and some smaller franchises. Forgetting Animal Crossing ... lol ^^

Duck Hunt alone, sold more than many franchises in gaming.
Included big ones, like Metroid!
I know the fact it’s a bundle title, but numbers is numbers.

Updated RARE-franchises and Pokemon Stadium-series. For the latter I included the GameCube-jrpgs, because they offer similar multiplayer battles. As for RARE, I made a separate franchise-listing for those that have at least two main entries, but one-offs or Perfect Dark with it's weird GBC-spinoff I put together as "RARE franchises". If someone has a better idea, I'm listening, but I won't list all these games individually.

WarioWare: Get it together! 1.24 million(300.000 japan)
Animal Crossing 38,64m
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 28,17m etc.
I suggest you especially compare the last report, there are probably more that don't hold
japan figures for some games (over a million each year) can be found by looking at each fiscal year end report, if you want
Thx. I already have these pdf-files. My plan is to first add all Nintendo-franchises (that I can find) and then at the end go over the latest financial reports to update numbers to their newest state. I did update the WarioWare number asap though, because a smaller franchise like that is easer overlooked later on ^^

Update:

Added Yoshi-platformers and the rest of Pokemon-games (although I'm sure there's a lot of spinoffs that I don't know about, so pls tell me if you see something missing). I didn't put Pokken as a separate franchise yet because it's basically the same game, only re-released on Switch. With Pokemon Channel, Wikipedia says it was developed as a sequel to Hey You Pikachu, but watching some footage on Youtube shows two rather different games. For now I treat them as one-offs, but feedback is welcome.

Update June 27th:

Added Mario vs. Donkey-franchise. Also added "Metroid Prime Hunters", because after reading up a bit, it's more than just a multiplayer-entry, with a real singleplayer-story.

@Celine : I found that you have "Mario vs Donkey Kong: Mini Land Mayhem" twice in yout Japanese numbers-thread. Once for NDS, once for 3DS. The game from what I see only released on NDS and since it's the same number, too (0,35mio), I think it might be an accidential double mention? Apologies if I misread anything, though, just trying to help.

Added nintendogs, Fitness-franchises Lightgun-franchises Brain Training-games and Mario Maker.

Two questions where I'd need some input if possible (hence why I make a new posting to push the thread back up):

1) I saw that I forgot about "New Super Luigi U". Would you put this togerther with the Mario-platformers? If yes would you also put "Super Princess Peach" in there? As I see it Luigi is basically a platformer like the Mario-games whereas Peach is a lot different and I'd put her in her own category. But I don't want to appear as to "not allow" Peach in there with the other "Mario platformers". So what you say? Put Luigi with Mario Peach not? Neither? Both?

2) Would you put "Link's Crossbow Training" in the Lightgun category together with Duck Hunt, etc.?

Thx!

It's an error, should be only for DS.

Quick screenshots for the worldwide and japanese NSW lists updated as March 2022:

Could you add Sin & Punishment?
(Both games)
If there are numbers available.
Added. Unfortunately no WW-numbers for the Wii-game.

- Also added Picross and Punch-Out!! franchises.
- numbers updated to Nintendo's last financial report as per Celine's posting above
- sorted all franchises by alphabet for easier search

Age of Calamity is at 4M and the first Hyrule Warriors on Wii U is at 1M.
The original Pokken on Wii U is at 1M.

There's also Diddy Kong Racing DS.

That is with japanese sales which doesn't count for Nintendo due to not publishing the title there
Yeah so? All games here have their known total and Japanese sales listed. Not western and Japanese.

Pls always link a reliable source if you find numbers need to be updated. I can only see 0,39mio for AoC in Japan, and no WW numbers for Pokken Wii U.

I added Diddy Kong DS (not yet here, but added to my list :) )

The Wiki articles I linked have the numbers and sources.

Updated numbers with recent CESA numbers where necessary. Thx @Grady for CESA numbers.

Added some missing games:
- Pokemon Ultra Sun/Moon
- Twilight Princess HD
- Wind Waker HD

EDIT: NSMB2 updated as per @BTB123's below posting

NSMB2 should be at 13.4M. Just a small difference, but still.

Might not have numbers for it, but possibly worth adding the original Wave Race on Game Boy to that series breakdown.

Here's a couple of graphs I made based on the numbers in the OP. I had intended to do these since the beginning. If anyone feels like an important graph is missing, feel free to ask, if it's not too much work I'll add it. For franchises like StarFox, it didn't make sense with so many WW-numbers being absent, unfortunately. Anyway, here goes. Design might change for future iterations of these graphs, but for now I think they look fine:

@Tokuiten In the Mario Kart graph MK64 is to high. It looks like the WW graph has it at over 11M. The game sold 9.87M.
As for F-Zero GX, what Nagoshi said is nonsense. It was never reported by CESA. Any other source is basically invalid, since CESA's source is Nintendo.

Appart from that great post.

Thx. I took a look at my source and I must have been a slip up where I took Mario 64's numbers instead of MK64's. Will fix it when I get up.

As for the Nagoshi number, I was in doubt, too, hence why I included a special note. Do you happen to have any other source for GX-sales?

Afaik there is no source. It never topped 1M WW so no actually correct WW number is known.

Made this little graph. I would have added more franchises, but there's gaps where we have no WW data, so I left it at these 4 big ones. Might do Japan-only graphs for the other ones at a later time:

I find that graph interesting, because it really shows the road we've followed with these franchises.
