DukeTogo84: What path led you to Big Time Gambling Boss and your decision to acquire it? It's a remarkable film and one that has gone mostly unnoticed outside of Japan, so curious what lead you to the title?

Francesco Simeoni: Just reading about it and being a lot more fearless with Radiance. When I started the label I knew I had to take risks so took the plunge. I felt under more pressure before but am liberated now so the fact the film is completely unknown didn’t faze me. I knew I had to release it because it’s such an impressive film I thought if a film which will review this well can’t sell I’ll have to give up and just regurgitate the same old thing, which I have much less personal interest in. I’ve had enough rebuying films now, I’ve done it three times from vhs to DVD to Blu-ray. My priority now is to discover new classics.

We are delighted to announce a multi-title, multi-year agreement with Raro Video to represent the label in the UK with a range of titles commencing in October 2023.

Each new Raro Video release will be created in collaboration with Radiance and include newly designed artwork, newly encoded masters and include legacy and newly created extras.

The first title released by the label will be Giorgio Ferroni’s macabre masterwork The Night of the Devils starring genre icon Gianni Garko. The release includes a High-Definition digital transfer from the original camera negative and is presented in English and Italian with optional subtitles. Additionally, there are archival interviews with cast and crew, translated in English for the first time pus a new audio commentary by horror experts Alan Jones and Kim Newman, a booklet by Rachael Nisbet and more.

Rarovideo is the editorial division of Minerva Pictures, founded by Gianluca and Stefano Curti in December 1999, dedicated to the distribution of moving images of high and recognized artistic value, according to an interdisciplinary approach that combines product quality and editorial care. The brand has gained, in a very short time, a wide range of fans and the affection of critics, coming to be defined, in the New York Times, "The finest European film boutique".

Messiah of Evil (SE) - We expect this second printing release to be available in November.
Following the early sell out of our limited edition release of Messiah of Evil we have decided to produce a Special Edition release of the film. We do not intend for limited editions to sell out in pre-order but the demand for this film has been so great that it exceeded our expectations. As such we feel it is only fair to provide a special edition to those who will miss out but retain key features which shall be exclusive to the limited edition. This release features modified artwork and a booklet featuring just one of the essays of our large book. We are always monitoring sales and hope to achieve a limited edition quantity that is appropriate for the size of the audience while being right for our business, rather than a solution which feels restrictive and invites 'scalping' and unfair secondary marketplace activity.

Jean-Pierre Mocky was a prolific icon in French cinema. Actor, director, novelist, and in-demand raconteur, Mocky made mainstream films with an independent spirit, even owning a cinema to help the distribution of his work. Yet his work had a specific style, unmistakably his, often with controversial and outlandish themes, and he came to be known as a wild and untameable force, acting as an uncompromising agitator within the French film industry for over six decades. Three of his wild cinematic adventures from the 1980s are collected in this new box set. Cult horror sensation Litan, hooligan horror Kill the Referee and Hitchcockian mystery Agent Trouble are presented from new 4K restorations on Blu-ray for the first time outside of France.

Raizo Ichikawa stars in this trio of action spectacles, films which created many of the tropes that we know ninjas for today. Gorgeously shot in black and white 'scope the films were a social phenomenon on release and are presented on Blu-ray for the first time outside of Japan.

From perhaps Italy's greatest genre filmmaker, Mario Bava made the first Italian sci-fi film of note, one that has gone on to influence such modern classics as Alien and Pitch Black. Available in three versions with a host of special features.

Next set of announcements & stock update - right before I put in a new order this weekend! I'm ready to do my part.gif Sales picked up throughout the month (read the second AVAILABILITY WATCH spoiler tag) as the sales from various promotions & new releases are booked. Planet of the Vampires is making a killing, having shape-shifted at least 4500 & is currently sold out on the official website. Clear influence on the opening of Alien so it has a wider, cult appeal & historical interest. Bounty Hunter Trilogy sold a further 300 copies in both the UK & US/CANADA. Overall the newer releases have started off strong. As expected, the genre & exploration releases from boutique labels that are most popular on Blu-ray. However some of the art-house & dramatic works are doing well like L'Amour Fou. Shorter print-run for Trenque Lauren works out, selling 1600+ copies already (Criterion holds the North American rights).

Tokijiro: Lone Yakuza (LE)​

Tai Kato's powerful yakuza film features Kinnosuke Nakamura (Goyokin) in the titular role as a weary gambler who must kill a man due to an obligation to a gang boss. The latest in our series of Kato releases was the director's first yakuza film, a period film that broke all conventions of the genre, fusing blood spurting action with melodrama worth of Japan's golden age masters.

World Noir Vol 2 (LE)​

Our second volume of globally focused moody thrillers features three classics from Germany, France and Japan. Helmut Käutner's Black Gravel, restored by the F.W. Murnau Foundation, is a post-war story of an illicit couple, Jacques Deray's Symphony for a Massacre features a stellar cast in a story of a criminal double cross and Takumi Furukawa's thrilling Cruel Gun Story sees Joe Shishido take on a daring heist. An inspiration to Pulp Fiction for its duo of heavies, this genre classic is sourced from a new 4K restoration and comes with new and archival extras.

June round up. Note that in order to avoid repetition & hopefully make it easier to follow, I will only include relevant parts of the emails under spoiler tags. Click the email newsletter links to read in full. Busy month with plenty of outlets participating in a 2 for £22 promotion boosting sales of Limited Editions. The remaining 500 copies of Planet of the Vampires were bought between May 29th - June 5th, due to how quickly the Limited Edition has sold Radiance Films has indicated it will consider a Special Edition similar to Messiah of Evil with a small booklet.

While the UK offers did help shift box sets, there are some releases, including from partner labels proving harder to sell even with major discounts. Hard to tell what people want overall but genre, exploitation & (certain) Japanese filmmakers appear to be popular while others struggle. US/Canada side of things is slow going but there are fewer releases overall which might play a part if collectors are less inclined to purchase an incomplete line up. Overall the first half of 2024 has gone ok but Radiance Films might reduce the print run for some films.

We Still Kill the Old Way (LE)​

Elio Petri adapts Leonardo's Sciascia's novel with Gian Maria Volonté as an amateur investigator caught up in a conspiracy involving Church and Mafia. The film won best screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival and an Italian Golden Globe for Volonté. Newly restored, it is released on Blu-ray for the first time in the UK.

A Quiet Place in the Country (LE)​

Elio Petri brings real life couple Franco Nero and Vanessa Redgrave together for this horror about art, sex and madness, set to an eerie score by Ennio Morricone. A UK Blu-ray premiere, this edition features new and archival extras along with a booklet featuring new writing.

July round up. Quiet month (although I'd consider the announcement of a Nagisa Oshima restoration to be anything but quiet!) with only two emails. But those all important twice monthly sales updates were still provided to advise on a trio of UK release selling out this month (see below). Plus a new interview with Francisco Simeoni where he lists his top 10 label releases.

M[m]: Do you have any Arrow acquisitions you were particularly proud of?

Francisco Simeoni: Yes, many, it was an incredible time when we had access to major studios and could put out things like Night of the Hunter and Big Trouble in Little China and it was a thrill each time we did that but I think I'm most proud of some of the kinds of films I'm now doing at Radiance and some directors who have crossed over like the Taviani brothers and Kiju Yoshida, they were great boxsets. The Borowczyk box set is one of my very favourites as is The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Miss Osbourne, an incredible film I was always surprised didn't do better but that space between arthouse and horror can divide audiences but it's one I find thrilling. I could go on, there were so many releases we got to do that I would count as not just favourite releases but favourite films

I vampiri (LE)​

A gothic classic that combines the Bathory and Frankenstein stories that would become Italy's first horror film, it was famously completed by cinematographer Mario Bava and would pave the way for Italian horror. From a stunning new restoration, the release comes with new and archival extras including a Tim Lucas commentary, rare interviews and more.

M[m]: What have been your best-selling & least-selling titles thus far?

Francisco Simeoni: Our horror titles have unquestionably sold best - Messiah of Evil, The Horrible Dr Hichcock out front but also Scream and Scream Again and already Planet of the Vampires. we've also seen a good showing for A Moment of Romance, Miami Blues, The Hot Spot, The Bride Wore Black, the Bounty Hunter trilogy and Shinobi are also tracking well.

Least selling titles have been titles like Fill 'er up with Super, She Dies Tomorrow but even then these haven't done badly just lower than others. Thankfully most things seem to be connecting with audiences which is great.

Forgot to include the above quote last month. August 2024 round up. Radiance Films held a 'we moving warehouse' sale while various stores had end of summer discounts, but first...

I’m sorry that this is off-topic, and I don’t want people to reply and derail (please don’t), but I need to get off my chest that I do find it depressing that the yakuza are “mythologized” both inside and outside of Japan, when one considers what they actually are: the consequences of the caste system, being made up mostly of the “untouchable” burakumin, who turned to crime purely as a means of upward social mobility in a society that long denied it to them, but also a refuge for societal outcasts within Japan’s rigid society, which mostly functions as a “found family” for outcasts who engage in criminal activity as a means of survival.

Don't work like that mate. Public forum & all that. You raise the issue of mythologising then inadvertently romanticise yakuza members when its organised crime we're talking about, not mere gangs but socio-political entities with major commercial interests & agency that can act on behalf of powerful vested interests. As for why I quoted you, Radiance Films staff continues on from Arrow Films in releasing jitsuroku eiga (実録映画, "actual record films" or “true account” films) which pushed back against chivalrous depictions of prior decades. The booklet included with the (now sold out) Limited Edition release of Yakuza Graveyard on Blu-Ray features an essay on the depiction of Koreans in Yakuza films. Plus an explanation by screenwriter Kazuo Kasahara on why they penned the script in response to criticism of his earlier work on the Battles Without Honor or Humanity series for having failed to depict them at all.

ORDER SHIPPING UPDATE​

Firstly, thank you all for your patience with our ongoing warehouse move, and the associated delays, we're really grateful for how understanding everyone has been. We have a few updates to share, as we move into the final stages of getting things set up here. Firstly, we're please to confirm that the first few orders have started to dispatch! Some of you may already have your orders in hand by now, and may have noticed a bit of a change. Up until now, Radiance orders were fulfilled by Lime Wood Media, and your dispatch information would've reflected that. These dispatch notifications will now come from our new distribution partner; Raleo Express. All future orders will be dispatched via Raleo, so don't be alarmed when you see their name on your tracking information. Secondly, due to the length of time in which we were unable to dispatch orders, we've accumulated a rather sizeable backlog of orders to ship out. So we aren't quite out of the woods yet in terms of delays. We are working through this backlog as fast as we can to get your orders out to you as soon as possible, so we do appreciate your continued patience as we power through them. Our warehouse move will soon signal new developments in our shipping options so be on the lookout for updated shipping options once we clear through our backlog.
