[PS5/XSX|S/NSW/PC] Mortal Kombat 1 crosses 5 million units sold.

(4 of 7) With over 5 million games sold, seeing Mortal Kombat 1 still in the top 15 most played Playstation 5 games makes us very grateful to Mortal Kombat fans. Thanks for continuing to support NetherRealm Studios games!

Mortal Kombat 1 full launch date: September 19th, 2023
Day of 5-millions milestone announcement: January 21st, 2025

For comparison

After 8 million (and...

Massive underperformance, no way to spin it.
I'm not into the FGC but it seems like the hardcore community pretty much rejected the game, it's not popular at events.

Competition, installed base and possibly "1" rather than "12".

We must not lose people.

A significant percentage of Mortal Kombat Sales come from casuals, the lack of cosmetics, a lot of fighters from the main story being on DLC and poor NetCode have done some damage on sales.

They need the $10-20 price point urgently.

There were so many compounding poor decisions around this game that 5 million sales is actually a testament to the strength of the brand and the prerelease promo trailers. I feel like they have to do everything right next MK (after some time away with Injustice 3 in between), they simply won't get the same benefit of the doubt they've received previously.

I assume sales will rebound with their next game which should be Injustice 3.

MK11 set up a pretty high bar tbh.
Also doesn't help that they had some actual good ideas, both in narrative and gameplay, that were executed in the worst possible way. You basically immediately deflate the hype balloon when that happens.

"you ignore the casual market at your own peril."

and Mortal Kombat 1 sadly "lost its casual player base" to quote Maximilian.

I do have to wonder if WB will simply allow that to happen.... because it honestly feels as if they're about ready to cut the lifeline.

Netherrealm (and MK) are a valuable enough asset that I can't see WB really doing anything that drastic. 5m in a year and a half is still sizable, especially for the genre, so this isn't a total failure along the lines of MVCI, SC6, DOA6 or (upfront) SFV.

I think worst case for WB is maybe selling the studio & IP, though it's not really a good climate for that right now either and the major parties who might've been interested a year or two back (MS, EA, Sony, T2, Embracer, Amazon, etc) probably aren't at the table anymore.

I was expecting less, going by sales chart metrics
surely a significant decrease compared to 11, but still not a mess imho
3 million fewer, launch aligned.

Which has an effect on expected dlc sales, hence the leak/rumour that the game is done getting new content.

Not fully related however somewhat because of NetherRealms and talk about Injustice, but do anybody have the numbers for Injustice 2? The only I could find is that it sold slightly less than 1.5M in three months.

I honestly expected less, the game was a non-event with casuals and was completely rejected by the FGC... it selling 5 million despite all that just goes to show how strong of a brand MK is.

Rebooting the story for the third time in four games was certainly.a choice
3rd time? I remember MK9 and MK1, but not the 3rd. Are you counting MK11? Cuz that was just wibbly-wobbly-timey-wimey shenanigans that set up the story reboot, not a story reboot itself, principle characters of the MK9 timeline were still as they were in that game.

And I like what they did with the character and setting changes in MK1’s New Era, I just think they rushed too fast to make these characters aware of their existence as being what they were purely at the whims of Liu Kang, among other flubs in the writing.
