¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Unit sales and revenue
PlayStation 5 sales jumped 75% in the UK last week, Gfk has revealed.

In terms of revenue, PS5 is up 63% week-on-week.

Price was £399 and some retailers included a game
It follows the first temporary price drop for Sony's console, with retailers selling the machine for as low as £399. Some retailers, such as Amazon and GAME, also included a game in addition to the price drop, with titles such as LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, Forspoken and Saints Row available.

Not the first time PS5 has been discounted
It's worth noting that unofficial pricing activity around PS5 kicked off in June in the UK. The average price of the console was £423 last week, which is actually only 6% lower than the week before when it was £451.

Standard PS5 +205% (3.05x) unit sales and was 73% of total sales.
The Standard PS5 console was the biggest winner with sales up 205% in units and 162% in revenue (average selling price went from £491 to £421). This version of the console accounted for 73% of sales. The price cut played a big part in that, but GfK says that unofficial retail bundles featuring Hogwarts Legacy, LEGO Star Wars and Gran Turismo 7 were also popular.

Third best week for PS5 in 2023. #1 and #2 were Week 6 (Hogwarts Legacy) and 7.
Overall, last week was the third best week of the year for PS5. The console's best weeks came in February due to a popular God of War Ragnarok hardware bundle.

temporary price cut(s) are doing great across EU
this is working very well to clean stock (it's funny they are doing this few months after having being able to actually distribute it properly lol), increasing install base, preparing for the new model later this year

Have I got the wrong end of the stick? I was under the impression this isn't an official price-cut from Sony, but further 'unofficial pricing activity' across various retailers, which is why there's random bundling included at some stores, as well.

Isn’t the PS5 being price cut all over the EU, UK, Latin America, etc?

I think the only major regions that haven’t gotten price cuts right now is America and Japan. I think even Canada got a price cut.

Sale last through 10 august so next few weeks will be good for PS5. Probably worst time for Series XS price increase in UK/EU.

If PS5 slim is digital only then one will see deals around £299 in black friday. Sony will likely not discount disk drives accessories. They get handsome margin on disk drive which will make up losses of digital slim. Even if people don't get disk drives Sony will earn more from digital games compared to retail.

It's clear that Microsoft can't compete with Sony on hardware. They should just follow Nintendo and step out, making their own thing.

Nintendo stepped out of providing hardware ? News to me.
Also thats weird post - yeah MS should step out because PS5 sales have increased due to a massive sales promotion ?

And lastly they already are trying new things, like the Series S as well as providing games native on PC and on mobile via Cloud.

They shouldn't stop making hardware, they should stop to focus on fight with Sony.

Series S for U$299,90 versus PS5 for U$399,90? Microsoft can't make consoles as powerfull and costing the same as Sony. They should follow Nintendo and find another way.

The Xbox One X as well as the Series X have shown that MS can deliver better hardware and consoles than Sony for the same price. The street price of the Series S is also much cheaper than the MSRP in most market.

MS and Xbox arent gonna leave the hardware market and we should be glad about it, after the price increase Sony pulled on us not too long ago. Competition is good and Sony wouldnt be this aggressive without MS, the upcoming Starfield and the ABK acquisition going through. Not interested in having to pay 700€ for the PS6, just because Sony think they can get away with it.

PS. On a more personal note , the PS5 is quite ugly, would be a shame if this was the only viable current-gen console option for customers.

Xbox One X was more powerfull, but came out a year after the PS4 Pro, costing 100 dollars more.

Xbox Series X cost the same as the PS5 with disc drive, but Microsoft lose money and can't produce enough, while Sony has profit and ships much more consoles. And now Sony is cutting the price of PS5, while Microsoft is rasing the price of Series X. Why don't we have a cheaper, all digital Xbox Series X, three years into this gen? That's what i'm talking about.

IMO MS and their pivot towards gamepass is for exactly this reason. They are absolutely trying to take Sony on from another angle instead of just beating them at their own game. MS buying Activision shows just how seriously they are taking this change.

Thanks to cross-gen the exclusive library is still thin on the ground nearly 3 years in and there are rumors of a new SKU on the horizon. On top of the built in problems of being humongous and dreadful to look at. But that doesn't matter. PlayStation has reached iPhone status where hype creates a self-sustaining feedback loop built on the promise of access to the biggest non-Nintendo games.

I believe so, they are trying to make gamers shift to PCs. It's a win-win situation to Microsoft, as a company, and it's good for gamers, but could mean the end of Xbox consoles.

Xbox the console isnt going anywhere, even with lower ales than Nintendo and Sony - its the baseline for their development studios and they worked years to amass a big first party portfolio. Starting with Starfield i expect them to have a heavy hitter every couple months, now is not the time to back down, quite the opposite actually.

sony is being really agressive this year selling the units they couldnt deliver yearlier in the gen. That will go on next year and at the plateau they will sell a pro to the hardcore crowd. Strategically flawless and yes, xbox seemingly cant or dont want to compete anywhere near the level which is disappointing but kinda expected, i expect them to go extra hard on gamepass from now on

that sounds all fine and well but unless they stop launching their big hitters day one on pc they will never be able to maximize their xbox business, which is whats needed to be competitive in the hardware side, besides other factors of course, but thats the main one

That's truth. Imagine if they stop making games for PCs and make XGS + Bethesda + ABK Xbox consoles only? They could sell +100 million. Will they do that? Doubt.

The genie is out of the bottle now and tbh they probably wouldnt have acquired those publishers if not for gamepass's existence. Thats why they have no choice but go all out with gamepass, its the only edge they have and where trends are on their side, with physical games sales declining and now disc drives being optional and all that

I don't think MS cares if someone buys Starfield on Xbox or on Windows. Or subs to GP on either and plays that way.

Xbox won't go away but that's because Sony and Nintendo basically won't let it. If they opened up their own platforms to GP, even a modified GP, that'd help embolden MS moving out of hardware imo. MS would much prefer managing a software platform on someone else's hardware, even in the Xbox division I bet.

They arent Nintendo or Sony who need to sell 100m every generation for it to be considered a successful generation.

Same way Sony doesnt need to beat Nintendo in Japan for Playstation to be overall successful.

Xbox isn't stepping out of the market and neither did Nintendo. The companies have to compete because they compete for the same games. Nintendo is ownly viewed as stepping out of the market because their hightest selling games are their own. Guess what, as 3rd parties raise their support of Nintendo platforms, it becomes impossible for Nintendo to no compete. Get the same games and you are pretty much forced to compete. Ask Playstation in Japan about not competing with Nintendo's far weaker, portable platform. Sharing games forces consumer to have to pick, or do you think consumers will just buy games twice for two different platforms?

Thats some crazy price elasticity of demand. But the UK had retailers discounting the official MSRP discount as well right? would be interesting to try and build a demandcurve for PS5 right now.

Ps5 has been discounted (100€ I think) all over EU/UK in July
Many think it's to clear stock of this version to launch the new model on a cleared market

75 euro officially, with a few going up to 100, but average price in my country dropped around 50€.

I better hope this price cut is because they wanna get rid of old stock and preparing for a new model. My reason why I haven’t bought a PS5 yet is because it’s huge legit my reason and spoke too many who have the same reason. A slim model would make me buy it on day one.
