The early battle between the PS3 and the GBA is a good reminder than the follow-up to a successful and dominatint platform isn't guarented to sell well.

Didn't follow sales back then but it should have been such a bad surprise for Sony.

Those early days of the PS3 were very chaotic back at GAF. A lot of incredulous disbelief at the reality of the situation. Glorious, really. All the more impressive that Sony managed to turn it around years later.

Very interesting to see how dominate the 360 was back in the day. That and how the PS2 was still selling crazy well

Looking at those numbers, Sony is selling way less hardware now. They sold like ~10 Million PS2 + PS3 + PSP in 2017, US only.

Nintendo is also selling less, Xbox may be selling the same or a bit less, since they had only one console.

Even so, all of them are getting much more revenue than before.

@Welfare could you post also the price of those consoles. Good times before, i believe PS2 was only U$99,90, no surprise it was selling so well.

I was there to witness it all. The situation kept escalating until GTA IV's launch month one year later.

GAF exploded once the numbers were in.

PS2 hits $99 in 2009. I'll add the prices for the beginning of each year. Any price changes are noted in the Major Hardware Impact section.

Love the thread and all of the info. 2007 is certainly a year for the ages. Not a bad time to be a senior in high school :D

Looking at the top ten for the year, it is interesting how with the exception of Wii Play and Guitar Hero, all of those franchises are still super popular in the gaming sphere. You could argue that outside of Halo, all of them are stronger now than they were back in 2007.

It makes me wonder how long since 2005 the GameCube was outselling the displaced Xbox (by the 360) 5:1. Because it paints a new picture for the GC's lack of ability to catch up if it was selling over the original Xbox at that level. It would give credit to the theory that Xbox was popular enough that people did immediately move to the 360 meaning it WOULD have been pointless for Microsoft to give the original box long term support like the PS2 because most who had become new fans of Xbox, or who came form PC gaming, would have no reason to stay with the original with the 360 out. Especially with the large power jump between the two.

We'll have to wait and see if that's true for assassins creed, but I don't think Madden has been as strong as 08 for all versions.

You guys have no idea how much i'd love to go back in times to follow sales during that timeline.

Wii madness and Sony losing dominance was such a storyline as well as 360 becoming stronger and stronger as the generation goes on.

The good old times, GBA vs. PS3, epic battle.

It was also funny see some folks really angry about Wii dominating so hard the HD twins.

Xbox did very well in 2004, even outsold PS2 for the holidays and have it's best year almost doubling Cube sales in USA, but Microsoft was already decided to move on, in early 2005 we had reports of Xbox being supply constrained and rumours about end of production, what was confirmed before Xbox 360 even was launched.

In retrospective they did the right move, instead of insist in a loser console, they focus to transfer the momentum to a new gen and with the help of Sony mistakes had a terrific generation with 360.

Xbox was killed so quick because Nvidia were assholes over the price of the GPU. Microsoft made as many as they had to keep a presence on shelves before the 360 started production and ended ties with Nvidia.

The 2004-2006 years were *really* grim for the Cube. You had months during which outlets like IGN and Gamespot had trouble finding one noticeable release to call it 'game of the month', while you had at least two excellent games per month on Xbox and PS2. Check this archive of Gamerankings for 2004, 2005 and 2006 for each respective console. It is eye opening.

There was absolutely no chance for it to catch up with the Xbox on the long run.

Yup. That’s half the reason why the Xbox 360 was rushed out of the door before it was really ready (the other half being that Microsoft really wanted to beat the PS3 to market). Microsoft were losing ridiculous amounts of money on each console (owing primarily to its off the shelf GPU and HDD) and couldn’t wait to dump the OG Xbox like a lead balloon. The OG Xbox basically died immediately as soon as the 360 released.

I can’t imagine that Nintendo were making anything off of the GCN at the $99.99 price point either (Now THAT was desperation!), but at least they weren’t losing the literal billions that the OG Xbox was.

Ahh, these way the days of sales! Rich data and a hell of a narrative to go along with them! :D

For me january 2005 mark the end of Gamecube with Resident Evil 4, Zelda TP was the only remarkable game left for the future but Nintendo killed the Cube for good when they announced the Wii version.

2005 was really a bad year for Nintendo overall.
Gamecube was almost dead and PSP was the first non Nintendo handheld to compete with them to the point that in the firsts months PSP was close to Nintendo DS.
The light has come from Japan at the end of the year.

It's insane how much more info we were used to getting back in those days.

I didn't directly post on GAF at that time, but i was already following sales results. NPD threads were completely unleashed. I miss them quite a bit. Today they would never be accepted though : )

It's always unreal how bad the PS3 was performing in the US, especially during the holiday season. Not even with the slim launch, which was pretty much a complete reboot in terms of marketing as well. The PS3 MSRP went from 599 to 299 dollars in just 3 years and yet was never able to compete with the Xbox 360 in the US.

Halo 3 performance was just in another league as well. What a game.

Oh and thanks Welfare for creating these threads. Much appreciated.

I sure was. For me it started by reading NPD magazine info dumps back in the mid 90's, then progressed to Gaming-age by the late 90's. Back then the info was tremendous and available, yet had little to no interest amongst the users and discussion was incredibly minimal.

PlayStation being so dominant and the de facto leader of the market made things simple from that standpoint.

Amazing thread, and a blast from the past with just how dominant not only the 360 was, but it's software selling power was immense.

All these numbers bring back strong memories of the 1up Yours podcast where they would spend a good chunk of time going over the NPD numbers every month. Microsoft's introduction of Live partway through the original Xbox really started paying dividends in the 360 era, and seemingly every news item in that 2006-2008 time frame was a plus in the MS column and a minus in the PS one.

I picked up my PS3 in March 2007 (for 599 US dollars!) because Motorstorm and Virtua Fighter 5 finally released - both exceptional games. The '07 fall was really good too with Folklore, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet & Clank Future, and the original Uncharted.

oh. Good old times when we still got plenty of data. Wasn't member of GAF yet (as you needed work or school/university email) but followed NPD threads there and discussed them in Vgchartz lol (I think i joined Chartz around 2006).

Seeing vgchartz and GAF in the same sentence makes me think of ioi. What is up with him?

I was there to witness it all. The situation kept escalating until GTA IV's launch month one year later.

GAF exploded once the numbers were in.
Yep, that infamous hd twins vs wii gif was born there in April, iirc.

People kept saying wait for gta, that'll right the ship. It didn't.

Somewhere in that year was Nintendo's acquisition of Monolithsoft which got tears of laughter from the masses(buy Tri-Ace Nintendo and turn them around too please) as well as iirc the birth of COD as a monster franchise that literally killed the WW2 Medal of Honor series in its bed.

2007 was the year the console wars got UGLY.

That entire generation showed how entitled people were about their favorite plastic boxes, all the anger over the now multiplatform big ips that Sony fans took for granted.

They didn't even lose access themselves but just the mere fact that others gained was enough to show the ugly underneath.

Nintendo = bear, Sony = salmon shenanigans.

Halo 3 was an event release like I can't believe. Just crazy times to witness

You say this but the Gamecube was apparently selling 5:1 a dying Xbox that was about to be, and then quickly was replaced, in the strongest region for both consoles with FP support from Nintendo until discontinuation.

What it shows is that the Xbox was at some point demolishing the Gamecube in sales in US, NA, and UK iirc so hard that the GC with Xbox hanging the towel selling 5:1 the rate couldn't catch up with the Xbox.

@Welfare what were the yearly shipments for the Gamecube and Xbox in the US?

$299 is 3 years compared to the PS2 was a slow decline in price, even compared with the 360. The price was a big problem in the US, but the games were even more, there are people who claim the library wasn't that bad early on but aren't getting that those aren't the games you wanted to buy a new console for, many of those games were what would supplement your purchase, the motorstorm songs were online for a reason. People were parodying that PS3 E3 for years, and the last straw for millions was not only the snobish marketing and the terrible PR from Sony staff blaming fans, saying you won't find anything on the shelf or we will pay you $1000, or laughing off fan complaints who brought the console.

But it was that the games that would be a reason to buy a PS3, especially coming off the PS2, were far and away better on the 360, and it was different enough that it was noticeable to the average dummy. between graphics, performance, effects, or all 3, the PS3 was not putting out what it needed to and the blaming developers needing to understand their hardware backfired on them hard, and caused many developers to go exclusive to the 360 or to have the worst versions of their games on the PS3 which turned off players.

Honestly, if it wasn't for Kinect, move (did more for Sony than people realize but people forget about that because of Kinects success), or that Generation lasting longer than usual, I have no clue if Sony would still be in the console space, because they ended up keeping the PS3 going out of necessity, and they had enough time to try different strategies to reduce losses even if they could never make those losses back.

At the time a generation normally would have ended, Sony had moved and sold buildings, was in debt, people were thinking the company was collapsing heading toward bankruptcy, PS3 was pretty far behind the 360 and the Wii worldwide, the PS2 was selling more than it and was starting to slow down, leading to speculation Sony's lifeline couldn't hold, the multiplat problems were still apparent, MGS4 was only enough to keep the project going but not save it as people say, and Sony had discontinued, reduced, or sold several of their product lines.

I highly doubt if the Xbox One came out in 2010 or 2011 with a Nintendo alternative, Sony would have green lit the PS4. If they did it would have been a very flexibly but cheap console that wouldn't be as powerful, probably still using the cell, but when you are billions in the hole to the point where it spread outside of Playstation throughout the rest of the company, Sony probably would have put more focus on its other remixing products to stay relevant than a PS4. it was the long gen that gave Sony an opportunity for a PS4 to succeed and turn things around.

I remember Sony's phone line was also a big problem back then after they tried to connect it with Playstation, they would have profits that would literally wiped out just by the phone divisions losses, those charts were all over online then.

That whole gen was amazing, Nintendo came back from people thinking they were going to go, and the two time dominant champion was the one that ended up being the company that people were assuming would be dead by 2015 or a shell of its former self instead.

if you were there and paying attention to all angles it was freaking crazy. Microsoft haters went crazy, there were articles about people jumping into roads. it was an experience for normal people. Remember, GFWL and Windows Phone were being pushed along with the rise of the 360 and the perceived decline of Sony, there was talk about a draconian dictatorship where Microsoft would control all electronics in every category except motion controlled bowling, just plain hysterics by some of the fandoms who happened to be journalists.

"With Sony dead what can Japan do to stop the Chinese takeover" or something similar was an actual headline in 2008. People are burning Sony constantly everytime they had to sell real estate. in early 2006 people were surprised Microsoft even bothered with the 360 and though they would leave by 2007 after the PS3 came out, and Nintendos Wii had no chance and was a redesigned Gamecube that couldn't save the company.

It was fun to watch for people who weren't too obsessed about a company. We won't see anything like that again unless some new comer enters with a new consoles and just gets ahead of everybody, but that likely won't happen, unless Apple has something in store.

Thing is the Metal of Honor meltdowns were always blown out of proportion because MoH was never really that big. most big shooters didn't touch WWII or if they did they were on PC, so all someone had to do was take away MoH consoles niche and it would throw the franchise in a frenzy, and that's exactly what happened with MoH for later releases.

As for your "other gained" statement, all you have to do is look at the FFXIII threads before the 360 version announcement, and look at the threads on gaming sites or even video reactions when they announced the 360 version. The venom was lethal. Gamecube getting a spin off was fine, but Xbox getting any FF game was crossing the line and they were getting a main game? People went nuts. There was a video of a guy literally having a melt down and he actually just stopped talking to sob for like 5 minutes in the middle of the video.

Remember FF11 wasn't known by many because it wasn't a fanfare release, and those who did know were upset but just assumed that Microsoft being a PC company maybe they paid or it was an easy port. it was an old game from 2002 so they left it alone. But Xiii was not acceptable even though it was still coming to the PS3, on one Bluray, fandom just didn't want Xbox to have the game just because. That wasn't the only example of a franchise associated with Playstation releasing on Xbox with anger too.

I remember that Oblviion wasn't a real rpg, or it didn't have the content or world of FF and that was all the Xbox was going to get, and then FFXIII ended up being a linear hallway and almost all the fans had a second meltdown all blaming the 360 (lol) for the design change with no evidence.

2005 was really a bad year for Nintendo overall.

Ahh, these way the days of sales! Rich data and a hell of a narrative to go along with them! :D

They weren't losing billions because Nintendo wasn't giving us GameCube losses, they gave us overall profits using the GBA and later DS as cover. They stopped mentioning specific finances related to the GameCube once things stopped looking rosy and they were cutting the prices of hardware and games, so we will never know outside some ex-staff info or leak how much the Gamecube was losing. They were losing money when they made the first price cut fast and paid for those exclusivity deals, some of which didn't last, they lost more when they cut game prices again and went to $99, and stopped manufacturing consoles temporarily to get rid of inventory. I don't think they lost as much as the Xbox of course, but they definitely lost more than the Dreamcast in total + late Saturn.

Xbox 360 was an interesting case because they really couldn't lose anymore money on the console so the 360 was much more of a necessity than people think. That $4 Billion loss wasn't gradual, most of that loss which was due to hardware partnerships with NVidia and others started escalating quickly in early 2003. Microsoft couldn't wait to drop the price in order to keep momentum so dropped the price for the first time BEFORE the PS2 did, which caused Sony to also drop the price because the Xbox was actually competitive in the US.

One thing to note is that the Gamecube and Xbox price cuts weren't just in the US either, they were in multiple territories which adds to both consoles losses.

Based on estimates I've seen they went from over $1 billion in losses to over 3 billion when the 360 was given a rumored release window in late 2004. If they supported the Xbox for another two years like the PS2 i could easily see a $5 billion loss or more. Microsoft would have no interest in the project they needed revenue to come in without it leaking on the floor as it was received ASAP. Something those who used to blast Microsoft for cancelling the original console early don't understand.

PSP had almost caught up to total NDS sales by May 2006, only about 100K difference, then June 2006 say the release of the $129 DS Lite and the rest is history. PSP could never catch up after that. That Game Boy audience which bought in at ~$100 was now ready to buy the DS and Nintendo was reaching an even more diverse crowd than that. Before then, DS and PSP were basically competing for the more hardcore consumer.

I think that PSPS may have lasted longer and took more sales than the DS, but not likely win, if they had executed on their plans on UMD intead of getting cold feet and dropping much of their plans. They also wanted t push the PSPS harder as a media player that could play games but they started to role back on that too. It was working because I saw even older people using the PSP as a music player and a way to check emails and go online with wifi. A lot of this happened in 2006 as well.

2006 wasn't the best year for Sony, including their decisions.

The explosion was probably due to Halo 2, the most hyped game and then biggest entertainment product of all time being on a console that just dropped the price to make it more accessible would move units big time.

Xbox was leading in 2002, but that slight win for the Gamecube in 2003 after cutting the costs of games, accessories, and the console to $99 seemed to have backfired in 2004, and Halo 3 pretty much made it impossible for the GameCube to catch up even if Xbox stopped all releases including third party and ended the console on Dec 31st, 2004. Likely applies worldwide too.

The Gamecube $99 wasn't short term bump worth it, they should have just tried to salvage the console before dropping the price to keep the console value high for the consumers. Dropped the price to $99 in 2004 or 2005 would have probably worked out much better.

Xbox gap between 05 and 06 is brutal. I'm surprised it sold that much in 05, but then again i guess with Forza, Splinter Cell CT, Jade Empire, Ninja Gaiden Black, Doom 3 and Burn Out revenge were enough to keep the console alive in 2005.

I don't think the PSP media functionality would've been all that fruitful. GBA sold more in 2001 alone (7 months on the market) than what PSP and DS each sold by May 2006. PSP looked good in comparison to the floundering DS but in the end once Nintendo got the price down the DS became a "real" option for the handheld market.

For Xbox, Quarter 4 2004 was only slightly higher than Q4 2003. A lot of the growth came from being at a low enough price.

Gamecube production was halted in 2003 because Nintendo inventory was full of unsold consoles.

They dropped the price to $99 because Gamecube was collapsing.

Amazing thread. Do you plan to do the following years, too, and if so, up to what year is there available data? I forgot when NPD decided to no longer give reliable numbers to the public.

Yeah the plan is monthly threads up to the present. I think having a yearly compilation even for recent years will be important for future record keeping.

Amazing how detailed the data we received back then was. I was to young to follow this stuff back then.

What's funny is I found out about GAF in like 09 for something completely unrelated to sales but when I needed a paid email I just looked away. Took until 2014 for me to actually join lol

Oh man you missed the most vitriolic years I've ever seen online.

I lurked Gaf from 2005-6 onwards and the ps3 fallout + Nintendo's rise and Microsoft success was taken HARD by people online.

Like, I was there when FF13 was announced as a multiplatform title on Gaf and so many memes that are old today were born from that time.

The "I don't know if you know this about Japanese culture(I'm an expert)" one, the HD towns are hard... people were losing their minds.

There used to be drawings in the mediacreate/npd weekly threads, showing platform placement, literal console war humorous fanfiction...

Acquisitions and closures and mergers galore.

Crazy time to witness, and it was all over plastic boxes.

I'll say this about that era; modern Nintendo was formed in the oven of that time frame.

I sincerely think this was when they really understood that no matter how good they do, they'll never get the support Sony will, and ever since they've taken steps to build themselves to the point that they won't need that support.

Sony went from getting it all exclusively to most titles being multiplat, and they saw how it worked against them.
I'd have expected them to take the lesson from the ps3 era and do what Nintendo did but instead they've seemingly become more homogeneous to a point, and rely even more on 3rd parties.

They're making more money now than they ever did with ps1-2 but they're exposed on other fronts.

Microsoft had all the goodwill in the west at the time, but Mattrick threw it all away to chase maybes and Xbox is still recovering from that.

I only started getting interested in video game sales in early 2020. That's also when I found the Media Create threads.

All very true. Nintendo were really being propped up massively by the GBA's hardware sales throughout 2001-2006. That thing was an absolute monster, especially in the US.

It's worth keeping in mind though that though the GBA was a hardware sales monster, its software sales were rather mediocre by comparison. The decline in home console software sales (in-line with the huge drop in home console userbase with the GCN) really hurt Nintendo; because that's where the big money truly lied. GBA was Nintendo's lifeline for sure, but it could only prop them up so much, since the software sales weren't that great overall.

I mean they obviously still rely on third parties but first party Sony sw sales are way higher than they were during PS1, PS2 or PS3 days. Like especially during PS2 era they completely relied on third parties (which obviously worked well for them at the time because they got so much exclusive sw from third parties)

Gamecube production was halted in 2003 because Nintendo inventory was full of unsold consoles.

They dropped the price to $99 because Gamecube was collapsing.

I brought that up already, the issue however is that they cut the price to $99 so fast that people were questioning the value outside gamers who got it for cheap as a supplementary.

Yes, but Sony was planning to make the PSP much bigger than it was at launch, and pulled back. They didn't even really push multimedia until over a year after the console launched, that's when they started having the movies displayed in stores separately from the games either side by side, or the movies were in the movie section instead of the game section.

They wanted to promote UMD, but they let the opportunity pass them by. If they made a big deal out of the PSP's game graphics, multimedia, and UMD for portable video watching (not to mention downloads and music) from launch the PSP may have done a lot better. It still sold a lot world wide but it's sales in the west are what stopped it from being more competitive with the DS later on.

Sadly they gave up on all their unrealized plans with the Vita.

Microsoft had all the goodwill in the west at the time, but Mattrick threw it all away to chase maybes and Xbox is still recovering from that.

is it? Xbox has been outpacing the last two consoles from day 1. i would say the recovery happened with late Xbox One.

I wouldn't say it was a maybe either, he wanted to have games, but he also wanted kinect to be included in everyone's homes because he though it would still be popular enough that an improved kinect would sell another 25M. he also wanted to have voice commands for every country work in their own language, which is why they were only going to release in 13 countries, which had to stay when they turned the clock back because those units were already being produced.

If you look at it from his perspective he was actually thinking reasonably, it just turned out he took the wrong bet, and he gave poor guidance to staff which created all those PR flubbs before launch.

The things he wanted to do that do deserve real scrutiny is that he wanted to control used games, and give them to selective partners as a monopoly. He wanted to try and prevent abuse for several of the features planned by having a check-in which once a day, then reduced to once a month before it was removed. He also wanted to require Kinect for DRM and to create individual identification tied to it for marketing, customer service, and recommendations.

It's why the PR of many Microsoft staff were either confused because they had no guidance, or acted insulting toward people saying that it was too late, people didn't know what they were talking about and the process of making a console, and they couldn't just "flip a switch' to roll back everything.

Turns out for most of this they could flip a switch. Good thing they did it before launch, otherwise it wouldn't have been as strong as it was and the Xbox one would have been DOA with no ability to turn things around.

To be fair, Sony barely had a FP on the PS1 and PS2. On the PS1 outside of GT, their two biggest franchises associated with them were made by third parties under agreements (Crash and Tomb Raider), and with the PS2 outside Jak and GT, anything else they had was niche (Ape escape) or were contracted out or exclusive deals (GTA, FF, SC3, Sly, Ratchet, PES, Tekken, DMC, etc.) and didn't really change until 2005 with the released of God of War, from there only finally started building up it's first party.

Those early days of the PS3 were very chaotic back at GAF. A lot of incredulous disbelief at the reality of the situation. Glorious, really. All the more impressive that Sony managed to turn it around years later.
One of my first memories on that forum was someone with a Disgaea avatar saying they had, “pallets of Wiis at the Walmart he worked at and they couldn’t get rid of them, but the ps3 couldn’t be stocked fast enough.” Happened to be that he worked at a Walmart 10minutes from my house, so I sent him a message asking if he could hold one for me, that I was on my way out the door, and that I’d throw an extra $50 his way for the trouble.

The message he sent was the most nonsensical, rambling collection of words I’ve ever read. Basically saying that he didn’t ‘hate’ Nintendo, he was just disappointed with what the Wii is/was and to please not come to the store asking about the Wii being in stock.

I stood in line 6-7 months later at midnight at the same Walmart to finally buy a Wii, getting the last one off the truck.

Console warriors in a nutshell.

I don't think they had a choice with sales being so bad.

$99 had a good effect on sales.

Not really, they got a modest yearly gain that was concentrated to a few months and by the fall the sales were diving into mud. They could have waited, had some retailers give a free game out, maybe some rebates. Then cut the price in late 2004 or 2005 to $99, the difference would have been noteworthy. It wouldn't turn things around but they may have done better and made more money on the Cube and they might have still made the Wii but maybe not completely abandon the traditional gaming audience as hard as they did and maybe it would have had HD, or a revision with HD.

Nintendo did with Gamecube what 3DO did with 3DO. Instead of waiting to drop the price when the hype for the competitors cooled off, they saw that deals were generating sales and decided to try and undercut the guys who were selling more at a HIGHER price with games and accessories being sold mostly as regular retail price. That gives you a boost in sales, by makes your hardware look worthless and you end up losing a lot of money raising toward the bottom.

Luckily Nintendo had the GBA and later DS plus a lot more free cash than 3DO (or Sega who also pulled that trick, arguably in a worse way than both the others.)

They actually did exactly that. https://www.gamecubicle.com/news-nintendo_gamecube_free_game_bundle_promotion.htm

Following less-than-stellar holiday sales for Nintendo GameCube, Nintendo of America announced they will soon offer consumers a free game with the purchase of a GameCube for $149. Beginning February 9th, select retailers will offer GameCube buyers the option of Mario Party 4, Metroid Prime, Resident Evil Ø, or Star Fox Adventures as a free title with their console purchase. "For less than $150, players will find a world of quality only available with Nintendo" said George Harrison, senior vice president, marketing and corporate communications, Nintendo of America.

Sales improved but it was still a fair bit behind Xbox by the time the deal ended in May.

That's not a free game promo, that's a "here are games we are fine with giving away and only these promo" also no rebates.

They needed to not only do some bundles for their best sellers which I understand they wanted to avoid (this time for some reason) but they should have allowed retailers have a larger field of games to give away free (not all of them of course) when consumers brought a console, officially there were also very few buy one get one deals too for existing owners.

Regardless though, they barely waited to see how things would turn out by the holiday or after, and had a dry run of the $99 for several retailers in August, and made it the official price in September that same year which was already rumored in during E3, so the decision to do that had to at least been made in June if not earlier, that's not even 5 full months later.

Their decisions completely decimated the consoles value, it wasn't looked at like a price cut, it was looked at as near expiration bread at the grocery store being sold at 60% off.

As painful as it would have been they should have waited at least until 2004 for a $99 price cut, it wouldn't help the GameCube's position much but it would have sold better in the US/UK at least, and may have prevented Nintendo from going all-in washing away their remaining base with a blue ocean, with Iwata claiming that they were failing because gamers weren't buying "sophisticated" and "time consuming" games: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/3134651.stm

Nintendo's president, Satoru Iwata, has also said he wants to move away from increasingly sophisticated and time consuming games, which dominate the games industry at the moment.

The games market shrunk dramatically last year, Mr Iwata said, because players were getting frustrated with the ever more sophisticated games.

Some games can take months to finish and the result is players are buying fewer of them.

"This trend is clear to everyone, and the trend continues this year," Mr Iwata said.

So in a bid to recapture sales, Nintendo has said it will move back toproducts that anyone can play and enjoy.

This didn't help the GameCube's perception either, putting it mildly.

Those were 4 major games they had available, it was absolutely a free game promo. There was also a Super Mario Sunshine bundle available by then as well https://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/7702/nintendo-unveils-super-mario-sunshine-bundle

Holiday 2002 sales at $149 with the main Mario game bundled in were not good. A free game deal didn't do much for sales afterwards. They had to go $99 because PS2 and Xbox were now $179 and Nintendo's only advantage was being cheaper.

GameCube was fucked with Xbox being a more viable option to PS2. They didn't have a chance to improve on what the market perceived it as which was a third rate device that had inferior offerings to what Xbox or PS2 had. Holding off on $99 for another year would've lost even more customers to the competition in Holiday 2003.
