• Akira Toriyama passed away

Let's all commemorate together his legendary work and his impact here

Nintendo software and hardware sales data from 1983 to present

Captain Toad has been pretty consistent the past 3 years in sales with an average of ~360k. Maybe it can leg out to 3m lol

What were you expecting?

A late port hitting 25% is good, even if it's 'only' 8 months after,
It's definitely not bad, I just expected Switch to do better.
That was just my false expectation.

The really surprising thing though are the PS4 versions outselling the Switch versions in 2021.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see the legs of the old games shrink somewhat in 2022, not just because its the 6th years but 2020 and 2021 were peak COVID years and I’m not sure how that may have helped many of these games. Is this a reasonable possibility?

I was thinking the same thing about 2021 tbh, and yet a handful of games went up with no warning (the only predictable one was Xenoblade 2) while others barely went down.

But yeah logically 2022 should be the start of a more significant decline for most titles, with MK8D, Kirby, Bayonetta and Xenoblade as the most likely exceptions. The weak FYQ1 in the US might point to a steep one for some, but it's not clear yet if that was an anomaly or not.

The question is, does logic apply to the Nintendo Switch? :p

they'll announce Drake and 4K patches for games, extending the legs of games. BELIEVE!

Shouldn't @Grady's new numbers be threadmarked as well? Even if they've presumably been added to other spots, I liked the idea of the posts in question being highlighted as it's where all the new info is.

* Global sales of the SKU 'Pokémon Sword/Shield + Expansion Pass' are not counted towards the total for 'Pokémon Sword/Shield' in Nintendo's public shipment data. Since this SKU was not listed among Nintendo's million-seller titles, its global sales are under 1 million units and it appears that its shipments were strictly limited to calendar year 2020.
These graphs are super cool!

Do you have the next ones after Astral Chain? E.g. Animal Crossing, 3D World, etc...?

Thanks! I chose to only have them in text this year because they'd make the graphs bigger without being as interesting as the rest with only 1 or 2 bars of data each, but yeah since you're asking here are bonus quick test versions to show 2020-2021 games:

Lower-sellers (2020-2021 only, presents well but lacks comparison to older titles which tbh is not as much of an issue as I thought)

Lower-sellers (2017-2021, too large)

Higher-sellers (scaled for Animal Crossing 2020, making the rest tiny)

Did we get an update on Taiko’s WW figure? If it just got announced at 1 million in Japan, it must have increased over the old 2020 number?

Just had a check. I completely missed it the first time around. Taiko's WW figure is 1.89m.

DRzogKK.png

Lower-sellers (2017-2021, too large)

IEArHtV.png

Higher-sellers (scaled for Animal Crossing 2020, making the rest tiny)

JzYfSOT.png

Higher-sellers (with Animal Crossing 2020 out of bonds lol)

Thanks!

Now the most interesting part of these graphs is comparing the yearly amount across different releases, e.g. 3D World in 2021 vs Odyssey in 2017!

I'm sorry if this is a silly question, buy why is Bayonetta 2 reported as "--" during 2021 unlike all the other games on the list?

CESA doesn't report how much it sold during the year, people are just deducing it by subtracting the known total in 2020.

Except for Bayo, all the games in that list were already million sellers by Dec 2020, so we got their total in the previous white papers.

Because we never got official numbers before CESA 2022, so it's impossible to know how much it sold during 2021

Thank you both!

Nonsense, that's a new game vs a late port, potential isn't comparable.

For instance,
SM3DW+BF : 9,43M (as of March 2022)
SMO : 23,93M (as of June 2022)

And that was one of the most attractive late ports.

Very true. Also Astral Chain, it's at 1.3mil. Bayo3 gonna do 2mil or near it

Been waiting for the CESA Figures to post the updated July Figures, made a few adjustments to the charts and included a bit more data on Xenoblade. A few interesting data points, many of which other people already pointed out:

- Link's Awakening is very close to becoming the top selling 2D Zelda, just behind the original
- Smash Ultimate sold more than both Smash 4 + Brawl combine
- Yoshi Crafted World became the third best seller in the series
- Kirby Forgotten Land and Star Allies are just behind the original
- Paper Mario Origami King is the third best seller in the Mario RPG series
- Mario Strikers Battle League is 0.7m behind Charged. Once it surpasses it, all Mario Sports Top 3 will be Switch
- The Switch Boost is Real, the only 2 franchises in which a new game (non-remake) didn't break Top 3 were 2D Mario (Mario Maker 2) and Wario (Wario Ware Get it Together).
- Beyond that, often times the top seller is the Switch entry (3D Mario, Zelda, Smash, Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, Metroid, Mario Party, Mario Sports, Splatoon, Luigi's Mansion, Pikmin, Xenoblade, Fire Emblem)

Looking at the "Top 3 Franchise Average Sales" Chart, we had a discussion at the other thread about Tiers for Nintendo Franchises, which takes into account a few factors such as sales, public reception, longevity, marketing focus, critical acclaim. This is how I divided them, adding the context of the sales data.

S Tier: Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Animal Crossing (35.9m-14m)
A Tier: Splatoon, Donkey Kong, Luigi's Mansion, Mario Party (12.1m-7m)
B Tier: Kirby, Metroid, Fire Emblem, Xenoblade, Yoshi, Pikmin, Mario Sports, Wario, Mario RPG (4.3m-1.7m)
C Tier: Starfox, F-Zero, Mother, Excite, Rhythm Heaven, Punch-Out! (1.7m-1m)
D Tier: Chibi-Robo, Custom Robo, Advance Wars, Kid Icarus, Wave Race, Golden Sun (1m-0.5m)

Given how long it took for Bayo 2 to hit 1M, I'm not going any higher than 1.5M.
I think it’s hard to say until we know more, but if it reviews well I don’t think 2m is out of the question. I do think 1.5m is probably more likely tho.

Edit: Also I think 1.5m would be a fairly good result. Would be interesting to know what it would need to make to be deemed a success by both Sega and Nintendo.

@Grady Do you think there's more numbers to come, especially in regards to Nintendo 1st-party-games, or did you report all numbers? Asking because if all numbers are there, I'd update my Nintendo 1st-Party Sales-thread, too :) Anyway, thx for your efforts!

I think I've reported all of them. Obviously, I skipped Animal Crossing, Pokemon titles, Mario, etc since we have more recent numbers.

And all 3rd-party Switch stuff's been reported as well? What about non-Switch numbers, any left?

Bayo 1 sold over 2m on PS360 by 2014 and it's Platinum's Skyrim so it has probably doubled that by now or surely after the standalone physical Switch release

That seems like a hell of an assumption. Maybe after the standalone release.

I suppose it was decent news when it and Vanquish ended up on PC.

It has a lot going for it

Bundled with B2 in multiple SKUs on Wii U and Switch
25$ price tag on PS4+/XBO+ since 2020 with very frequent sales to 10$, or bundled with Vanquish at a 20% discount
20$ price tag on PC since 2017 with frequent sales to 5$ (daily and leaked LTD player counts also point to sustained high sales)
Massive cult classic status but unlike so many others it's actually easily accessible on all modern platforms

Bayonetta (PS3/XB360) had shipped 1.35M units as March 2010 and was overshipped.
There is a reason why the sequel was "saved" by Nintendo.

Thanks for the data.

Bayonetta feels to me like Monster Hunter before World. It stuck to roughly the same specs for 3 console cycles. 14 years of bouncing back between PS2/Wii and PSP/3DS capabilities for Monster Hunter and 13 years of PS3/360/Wii U/Switch for Bayonetta.

If Bayonetta 3 proves successful I think a sequel on Nintendo's next platform could bring the series to the next level. First 3 would need to sell well enough to warrant such an investment. 1.5-2 million wouldn't be enough to send that message to either Nintendo or Sega.

Paper mario on the other hand had the single largest YOY drop in the whole chart…
I just looked a bit deeper into the actual numbers, and realized that Origami King's "bad legs" in 2021 are quite likely not for the reason people think they are. Percentages is sometimes a very misleading parameter, especially when viewed without context.

In its first two months (by September), the game already shipped 3 million and was actually the fastest selling entry in the series. Yet by end December (the holiday season to boot), it only shipped an additional 50k. Now if this was a matter of loss of interest/sales potential reached, the game shouldn't have shipped an additional 290k in 2021 - yet it did. What this tells me is that the game was initially overshipped to some extent, but eventually interest (and actual legs) overcame this overshipment.

I’m happy with the sales of Donkey Kong on Switch!
With the WiiU original version, it’s nearly 7 million copies sold.

Pokémon Mini total hardware sell-in in Europe: 0.15M
Pokémon Mini total software sell-in in Europe (excluding bundled software): 0.11M

Nintendo has invested in total $54.20 million in Rare since March 1995.
At least that was Rare Acquisition Inc. final capital, a Nintendo’s subsidiary which existed only to invest in Rare.
