Unfortunately no, because Evilms has made a slight mistake: Nintendo doesn't report sales for "North America", they actually report sales for "The Americas" - which therefore also includes South America, the Caribbean, and the oft-forgotten/not-included parts of North America in Mexico and Central America.

Thus, an apples-to-apples comparison between PS2 and NSW in the New World isn't possible as afaik Sony never gave a combined figure including LATAM. But, if NSW eventually overtakes NDS's total of 59.93m in the Americas, then we can be fairly confident that Switch will be in contention for the best selling console in the Americas, and likely also North America (and the even smaller sub-category of the USA) as well.
Oh okay, I see your point. Thank you very much for your reply to my question. I think a lot of people wants to know whether or not the Switch has surpassed the PlayStation 2 in North America. This is also a little small part of the battle that is very exciting to keep an eye on.

Greetings, I have a quick question for you, now that we can clearly see based off of this Nintendo FY3/2025 Q1 earnings image that you have shared with us, that the Nintendo Switch has sold exactly 55.17 million units in the North America, does this mean that the Nintendo Switch has now officially surpassed the PlayStation 2 all time North American record. As last I heard the PlayStation 2 has sold 53.7 million units tops in North America. If this is true, can we finally give Nintendo the official title of the Second highest selling console in North American history. I haven’t seen any articles or news reports covering this achievement. I’m not sure if it’s 100% accurate but if it is please let me know whether or not Nintendo has truly officially surpassed the PlayStation 2 North American all time sales record. Thank you kindly.
It's hard to say whether the Switch has overtaken it or not, as we don't know the PS2's latest figures in North America.

The last time Sony communicated on it was 50 million in December 2008.

Thank you so much. I really appreciate you for mentioning this as well as providing that link. Trust me, it is really difficult to find the numbers. I’m looking everywhere. It is so hard to find exact numbers. I always thought that this would be easy to look up. Hopefully we’ll hear something official very soon

Switch will pass PS2 in US this year and given Nintendo is even more stronger in Canada than the US in comparison to Playstation we can also assume the same. In Mexico, we can also assume Switch will beat PS2 as Nintendo has always been stronger than Playstation there too so by EOY, the Switch should pass PS2 in all 3 countries.

No clue about South America though.

Most public gaming companies will have their stock crater and management in panic mode, but Nintendo has an arguably better structure of management not following shareholder whims like puppets. Everyone knows the plan.
Nintendo's 2024/Q1 is a most profitable first quarter ever.
And i hohenstly don't see why the management of any company would activate panic mode in this situation. The huge drop from the most profitable first quarter was predictable.
Nintendo take into acсount only commision from third party titles sales, so Net Sales are closely tied to Operating Profit - the drop in Net Sales was also predictable.

For example, PS's operating profit in FY22/Q4 was understandably down nearly 55% from FY21/Q4.

Furthermore, over the past 2 years, PS's first quarters have been less profitable than Nintendo's 2025/Q1.
Nintendo's 2025/Q1: 54.5 billions yen
PS's FY23/Q1: 49.16 billions yen
PS's FY22/Q1: 52.762 billions yen

Unless PS managment are in a constant state of panic, I see no reason for the management of any other company to panic.

Thanks for the details. This is such a very interesting part of the sales equation to me. I guess we will learn soon enough because I’m sure they have to be very close to passing PlayStation 2 in all of those territories combined.

Time for a price drop especially leading into the holidays.
Nintendo needs to lean into themed Limited Edition consoles as well as a price drop if they want to maximize sales. They did this with the 3DS and I think it helped add some level of sales they wouldn’t have otherwise had. Zelda, Metroid, Pokemon, Mario, etc… would help maximize sales from Collectors and hardcore enthusiasts that otherwise wouldn’t have purchased additional consoles.

Not this late in the game. Personally I believe a significant price drop along with aggressive bundles during the holiday period would get them closer to their target.

Nintendo needs to stop trying to make as much profit on games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or Breath of the Wild when they have already made them a lot of money already.

I think that 2m is decent number for Q1 which is filled with weaker software release over the gigantic Q1 last year with TOTK.

This Q2-Q3 has bigger release title i feel vs last year with Zelda Echoes, Mario Party and Mario and Luigi all pushing for sales.

With good bundles. I think hitting the 13.5m or very close to it like 12.5 to 13m is achievable. Price cut probably wont the be the key until Switch 2 is hitting the shelves.

Results and Nintendo sticking to their HW and SW forecast makes year H2 even more interesting. It is 100% sure they are hiding a final move.

Be it a price cut, it should be huge to drive demand as needed to meet forecast. Do not forget that the Switch is no longer a hot product and last two Holidays the drop was sharper in Q3 than for the rest of the year.

I'm still waiting for something else. Not a single clue, and that is fun.

I don't they have ever revised their forecast after 1Q, and in general I feel anyone revising anything after only 3 months is a very bad look, so they may revise down after it's more clear that they can't reach it, still I believe they'll go hard on the 3Q with price cuts.

I agree to your Q2 estimation. Your predicted Q3 numbers will be very hard to reach at all - even if they provide some kind of price reduction. I would expect Switch to have a worse christmas quarter than last year, because of its age and because of the software lineup, which was a bit better last year. So I think something between 5.5m and 6m will be the maximum potential for Switch this christmas.

Q4 is still a big questionmark. If Pokemon Legends would release in March, then I can see this quarter a bit better. So in the end, something like this:

Q1: 2.1m
Q2: 2.5m
Q3: 5.8m
Q4: 2.5m / 2.0m (first with Legends, second value without Legends release)

12.9m / 12.4m

So I think Nintendo will miss their target anyway, even with price reductions or Pokemon
They sold 6.9m last year during Q3 so I don't think 7m is far-fetched if we assume price promotions and attractive deals.

Legends ZA in Q4 could also provide a big boost YOY (both hardware and software). It's too early to really get a good feel for Nintendo meeting or missing their overall targets, too many unknowns yet. Q2/Q3 at least look good/comparable to last year though.

They sold 6.9m last year during Q3 so I don't think 7m is far-fetched if we assume price promotions and attractive deals.

2.1mil figure while it looks low still can line up to the 12.5mil-14mil mark. FY18/FY19 shipped 200k less Q1 than the current one and they went ahead and did 15/17mil respectively.

Q2 will have Sept help out with the Zlite releasing at the end of the Quarter (with EoW) so Q2 should do a little better and like you said, price promotions or heavy bundling for all models can makemholiday quarter strong. Q3 doesnt have to be a huge like most years, even 6mil is still extremely good if Q2/Q4 does above or at 2mil each.

If Q2 is better than expected I think 13mil+ can be reached. Depends on the Zlite of course. Last year Q2 was at 2.93mil with the worse Q2 (tied with FY18Q2). If this quarter can prove to be big or at least flat we are looking at 5mil total with Q3/Q4 needing 8.5mil (maybe 6.5mil Q3/2mil Q4?) To hit their goal.

They probably don't feel any particular need to do that, they're reaching the end of what will be an incredibly successful 8 year generation without bringing in permanent price cuts on launch titles or even starting a Selects line. Assuming they are serious about backwards compatibility they might be more wary about permanent significant price reductions on Switch 1 software if they expect to keep selling Mario Odyssey/BOTW etc to Switch 2 customers. I agree they could probably be a bit more aggressive and drive good holiday sales if they permanently cut at least $10 off launch Switch 1 games ahead of Switch 2.

I think either reduced price/bundled OLEDs or special edition OLED models could drive some additional hardware sales (these would appeal to both new users and potentially existing users finally upgrading to OLED) without bringing down the price of standalone software.

We are nearing a time when "Calcio" (Switch TV-only model) is a viable option.
The aim for it wouldn't be to become the main SKU going on because that's the role of the Oled model instead it is to target the more price conscious consumers and make them enter the Nintendo digital ecosystem with the long term goal to try to shift them to NSW2 down the road several years from now.
As a impact it would be more akin to the Game Boy Micro which total sales amounted to around 5 million units if memory serves me well but with the added benefit of the Nintendo Account system (it's not a "one and done" deal like GBM because it might have future positive ramifications if consumers decide to continue their stay in the Nintendo ecosystem).
The reason why "Calcio" would work well within the transition period, maybe even better than a straight price cut, is that, while cheaper, it is also markedly inferior (hybrid is the main attraction) therefore its cheaper MSRP won't impact the perception of the successor.
Of course "Calcio" wouldn't invalidate a price cut strategy to the existsting NSW models but it might delay it to a latter time when NSW2 is already running and at the center of people attention.

With these kind of drops, I doubt it'll catch the PS2.

I wonder whether a Calcio model woulf effectively be cheaper than a Lite to produce.

You make savings on the screen but you will need to ship a controller with Calcio.

Where that "Calcio" name come from ?

From what I rember Playstation TV was cheaper to produce than Vita.

PS TV price was ~100€ but without controlers compared to ~200€ for PS Vita Slim.

A bundle PS TV + Dualshock 3/4 would have been ~150€ back then.

Price for a TV only Switch should be ~150€ at launch.

Nintendo could simply deliver Joycons + Grid in this Version. I think removing stuff like display and akku will overcompensate the costs of Joycons. The biggest issue should be the form factor for a TV Only Switch

NVidia shrunk the Shield down to a stick using TX1+, that'd make a good formfactor for a "plug n play" tv only Switch if the thermals could work.

I'd also suggest bundling a Pro Controller instead of joy-cons as it'd be cheaper.

Usb-tv-stick + JoyCons would be neat (at a low price point)

That seems a little strange? PS4 and PS5 can't have that big of a difference?
What are you talking about? The PS5 is at almost exactly the same point the PS4 was at launch aligned. Are you mixing it up with the PS3?

I don't see it being in the form factor of a stick because I imagine Nintendo wants this to support physical and Nintendo is the type to be very worried about thermals. It'll likely be a small box that takes Switch carts bundled with Joycons (because there are games that don't support Pro), has good cooling, and retails the same as lite.

Maybe? By doing a TV only Switch, you're setting up a whole new supply chain though. Lite can be made chepaer because it's sharing a lot of components with Switch.

I'm also not sure if a TV only Switch would have much draw. Unless it was very cheap.
The Switch OS through datamining. All forms of Switch eventually made it in there
Before anyone gets excited though, Calcio isn't meant to be a consumer facing device. It was a screenless devkit or cartridge slot for internal usage. And any reference to it are stub out at the bootloader. So safe to say Nintendo has no intention of doing a TV only model (so far).

Gamecard and microSD card slots could both fit on a stick, they're super tiny. The real question is getting the fan/tube/thermals to work for sustained clocks, something the Shield stick didn't really have to worry about as it could throttle. Though a theoretical miniconsole could have other advantages, like using cheap HDDs or SDDs for expanded external storage.

The Pro Controller is compatible for 90%+ of Switch games, it's really just games or modes that force single or split joy-con use that don't work in terms if docked compatible games. Some of those are very popular too (Switch Sports, Ring Fit, Super Mario Party, Pokémon Let's Go, Just Dance series, Fit Boxing series, some motion or multiplayer modes in games, etc) but I think the cost benefit and core focus could make more sense to go with a cheaper Pro bundle instead. People can always buy joy-cons too for other games, it's not that different from Switch Lite being incompatible with most of the same Switch games.

Just shipped cheap pro con and be done with it lol. Joycon is more expensive than pro con anyway.

I think a standalone Switch 1 only really makes sense in the context of "driving up some more hardware sales in the final year to chase the PS2/DS" rather than as an actual quality product.

I think a screenless Switch is a great idea (and should have been offered earlier this generation) but they'd have a far more compelling product if it was 1) derived from Switch 2 hardware and therefore 4K compatible, 2) around the size of e.g. a slightly bigger AppleTV (with a card slot and ethernet/HDMI/USBC), and 3) actually had a decent suite of TV apps, which the Switch 1 lacks (on top of its lack of 4K output). I personally think this would catch a lot of people who have skipped the current gen but were using e.g. PS4/XB1 for both gaming and media apps.

What kind of Switch software sales LTD number do you expect at the end? Could it come close to 2 billion units?
If it included digital only games like Sony does then yes. However, with Nintendo's method it'll be around 1.5 billion.

I’m really surprised at the total lack of « Nintendo Select » line this late in the generation.

It would incentivize both hardware and software sales and have 7 years old games reach a new audience.

Digital discount more or less is the same as select for nintendo probably.

If they want to do deeper select discount, i can see the doing those only after switch 2 release.

It’s really not enough. It’s been proven time and again that a « prestige » line up at lower price points drives hardware and software sales.

This is the first generation from Nintendo without such discounted games that pish people towards the newer titles at full prices

Yes, and the same can be said of the Nintendo DS and more, as its games continued to sell until 2021. A Good longevity.
This is going to be even more true for the Switch I feel like. More incentives to maintain digital stores and dev times going up.

It might happen, but only when the Switch 2 is already out.

The question remains, will they really go lower than 40$/€ they do digitally?

If Nintendo would indeed provide a price reduction for Switch this holiday quarter, which kind of price drop do you expect? In Europe, the current price points are about:

OLED Switch: 329 Euro
OG Switch: 277 Euro
Switch Lite: 208 Euro

(just a quick check on current amazon prices)

So how strong would Nintendo reduce them?

It’s really not enough. It’s been proven time and again that a « prestige » line up at lower price points drives hardware and software sales.

This is the first generation from Nintendo without such discounted games that pish people towards the newer titles at full prices

Considering how Ninty is heavily focused on maintaining their game value, and how next gen game value is going to rise to 70 for their AAA push. I think, ninty is more careful in doing select.

If they do select after Switch 2 hit with more budget Switch 1 model. They will have 0 fear that it can hurt their new software pricing image.

If Nintendo would indeed provide a price reduction for Switch this holiday quarter, which kind of price drop do you expect? In Europe, the current price points are about:

OLED Switch: 329 Euro
OG Switch: 277 Euro
Switch Lite: 208 Euro

So how strong would Nintendo reduce them?

U$249,90
U$199,90
U$149,90

Go for 160 million!

This kind of reduction would be veeeery aggressive, I highly doubt that Nintendo will do it this way. I also think that OLED Switch for 249 USD would lead to a net margin lost for them per unit and Nintendo does not want to use this strategy.

I think they will rather do a small price reduction (or maybe none at all), but will start bundeling games by default.

So each Switch Lite could have an Animal Crossing Download Code packed in for free and the other Switch modles could have a Mario Kart Code as counter part. Something like this

A dream would be a bundle with some smaller games. Maybe the next Fire Emblem, Pikmin or Metroid would sell better, if they made one bundle with three of them included and consumers would have a more easy access to them.

Keep OLED price the same
Reduce OG to around 250 Euros
Reduce Lite to 150 Euros.

IMO Nintendo should release a new Lite SKU without the charger (Because Lite basically accepts any USB-C charger) for $129. Could even reduce the packaging/box to make it smaller and fit more units per shipment.

I can't speak to the European prices because I am American, but here are the current American prices:

Switch OLED: $350
OG Switch: $300
Switch Lite: $200

I feel like they will make it something like this ahead of the upcoming holiday season:

Switch OLED: $300
OG Switch: $250
Switch Lite: $150

I could also see them being bundled with a game. I would pick SSBU, MK8DX and ACNH respectively. And I can see Switch 2 being $400.

That's also what the standard European prices are except for the Switch Lite being typically 220€. The standard Switch was 330€ until it was lowered to 300€ a couple years ago because of inflation. These prices in the other post are just Amazon.
