Nintendo France : Switch becomes the best-selling home console ever in France, top software sales and more

As the tradition, Philippe Lavoué (Nintendo France President) has shared several tidbits about the Switch performance in 2022:
  • 987.000 Switch units sold in 2022, 50% of consoles sold were Switch in 2022
  • That puts the Switch total at 7.09m units since launch, above the record held by the Wii (6.3m) and above the PS4 (6.0m)
  • The Nintendo DS remains untouchable (10.6m units)
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe attach-rate is above 50% in France, which would translate to 3.55m+ units to date.
  • Pokémon had a record-breaking year for a franchise in France.
  • Three Pokemon games (Arceus, Violet and Scarlet) are in the overall best-selling top 10 in France in 2022, a first.
  • Pokémon Legends: Arceus is the best-selling individual SKU of the year, above FIFA on PS4 at #2.
  • They are also planning marketing activity around the Mario movie.
In terms of software sales, we got the following updates (retail only):
  1. Pokémon Scarlet & Violet - 701.000 units
  2. Pokémon Legends: Arceus - 575.000 units
  3. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - 445.000 units
  4. Nintendo Switch Sports - 425.000 units
  5. Mario Strikers - 264.000 units
  6. Splatoon 3 - 254.000 units
  7. Animal Crossing: New Horizons - 253.000 units
  8. Kirby and the Forgotten Land - 214.000 units

I was about to say above the DS is huge, but
  • That puts the Switch total at 7.09m units since launch
  • The Nintendo DS remains untouchable (12.0m units)
wow, way behind, it's a lot closer than that worldwide! DS looks within reach worldwide and in Japan.

Curious to see if those software retail figures are from GfK or GSD.

Here are some YTD GSD retail figures for some previous Pokemon titles:
- Pokemon Sun/Moon (2016): 805,390
- Pokemon Ultra Sun/Moon (2017): 359,273
- Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee (2018): <386,702
- Pokemon Sword/Shield (2019): 628,453*
- Pokemon Brillant Diamond/Shining Pearl (2021): 597,250*

*Not sure if these numbers include sales of the Double Pack

Like in the UK, Scarlet/Violet is the 2nd fastest-selling entry in the series at retail.

Crazy how much the DS was still selling even after the 3DS launch. If it were not for the price cut, it could have continued to sell for a long time.

crazy numbers all round, 12m DSs in a country of 67m is wild
very surprised/impressed by mario strikers numbers

@Astral_lion02 : are the LTD figures you listed taken after six years in the market or are they final tallies?
The DS figure at 10.56M is below the one given in the OP.
A typo from me, the last number I had for the DS is 10.6m units

Thanks for the precision. I am looking forward to reading more about the French market from Oscar.
I have only one thing to say about those figures...PARBLEU!
Dude, nobody says 'parbleu' anymore. Lmao.

DS is around 10.6M

Title and content doesn't match.

Switch becomes the best-selling console ever in France Vs The Nintendo DS remains untouchable (10.6m units)

The numbers are impressive, 1/10 of France population have a Switch.

Consoles ≠ handheld

And Yeah, that's what's wonderful about switch, it is what suits you best when you want to present figures.

Félicitations !
This is crazy I didn’t expect that, but I should have, there’s plenty of Switch games ads on TV channels.

Kinda surprised how low those PS2 numbers are.

Mario Strikers ahead Splatoon 3 is interesting. Nintendo should keep the game alive with more content this year.

Oh la la, c'est magnifique!!

As expected, Strikers is performing well in Europe, where football is more popular. Perhaps it did less than expected in Japan but as a Mario sport game it performed quite well overall.
Strikers in France is an outlier, even among the European countries. Its performance has been spectacular here, helped with a strong and continuous marketing campaign all year long.

It's only performing that well in France.

Apparently France being a very strong Nintendo territory isn't as widely known as I thought it was.
Yeah. If we were talking some other disproportionately strong sales regions for Nintendo (like Canada), I'd get it, but France having disproportionately strong Nintendo sales should be no shocker.

It's a handheld... what?

Okay thanks.

Interestingly it doesn't actually change my point much, Switch being at 67% of DS sales total in France at this point is well below the ratio worldwide, which is 74% if using September Switch figures and realistically well over 80% as of today.

I'm glad Pokemon Legends is getting the recognition it deserves. SV couldn't take on its lessons due to the development timeliness, but I really hope the next game learns from it

If only the other presidents were like that.

About Splatoon 3 is that good sales or bad?
It is a small growth at retail over S2 (230 826) with 1.5 months less in the market.

However most of the growth is expected digitally and we don't have an insight on this.

Still, it is one of the biggest games of 2022.

Title should clarify “home console,” since a “handheld console” is still a “console.”
Done

I think it's releted to the Gamecube over performance.

Gamecube sold 1,5M in France same as SNES.

France is probably the only place in the world where Wii beat PS2.

___

Mario Strickers is the #10 best selling game of 2022 (retail) if you combine the 2 pokemon games.
oh. That is very high percentage of overall Gamecube sales in Europe. Interesting. Also funnily enough France is probably also like only place in the world where PS4 matched PS2.

That is probably true for whole european market. It also way behind DS in Spain and UK. for example in Spain it's not even at 50% of the total DS sales (2.5 million vs 5.7 million (as of early 2012) ).

Thank you so much for this post. Seeing it this morning once I logged in was something that I did not expect but it is definitely one of the best post I’ve seen in a long time as a Nintendo fan. I’m so happy for the company right now.

I think that Pokémon SV are the best ones ever released in the mainline series, and while Arceus did some things better, SV is the much better game thanks to the deeper mechanics.
I also prefere the full open world of SV over the various open zones of Arceus.

That being said, impressive sales for the Switch and it's software. I'm very surprised with Mario footbal, I knew it was performing well in france but this is on another level!

they're a mix of things one did better than the other. a gen 10 taking from both (catching and pokedex in Legends, everything else in SV) on top of new stuff (bigger online focus?) would be the next step

I don't think Pokemon Legend's catching mechanic was ever meant to be in the mainline games. The sneaking and stunning changes alot. Maybe this is how the Pokemon games will be different? Pokemon Legends will be the brand that tells the past.
