Discontinuation of X (formerly Twitter) Integration and Social Media Integration for the Friend Suggestions Feature on Nintendo Switch

Applies to: Nintendo Switch Family, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, Nintendo Switch - OLED Model

On June 10, 2024, we will discontinue integration for X (formerly Twitter) as well as the ability to send friend requests to friends on social media (social media integration) from within the Nintendo Switch friend suggestions feature.

This impacts the following services:
  • The feature for posting screenshots and videos to X (formerly Twitter) from the Album in the Nintendo Switch HOME Menu will become unavailable.
    • While posting screenshots and videos to Facebook will continue to be available, this service may also be discontinued at a later date.
    • The ability to post Super Smash Bros. Ultimate screenshots from the Album in the Nintendo Switch HOME Menu to Smash World, in the Nintendo Switch Online smart device app, will also become unavailable.
  • Posting features in the Nintendo Switch title Splatoon 3 will be adjusted.
    • When posting from the mailbox in Splatsville, Inkopolis Plaza, or Inkopolis Square, you will no longer be able to post to X (formerly Twitter) or Facebook; the data will be sent directly to Nintendo servers. This change will allow users to make posts without one of these social media accounts, but images posted by players younger than 13 will not be visible to other players.
    • The image created for the post will be copied to the Album in the Nintendo Switch HOME Menu. Images in the Album can be transferred to a smart device wirelessly or to a PC via USB cable.
  • Posting features in the Nintendo Switch title Splatoon 2 will be adjusted.
    • You will no longer be able to post to X (formerly Twitter) from the mailbox in Inkopolis Square.
    • The characters that appear and posts that are displayed in the Square will be replaced by data already prepared within the game software.
  • The feature for sending friend requests to social media friends via the Friend Suggestions menu on My Page, in the Nintendo Switch HOME Menu, will no longer be available.
    • You can continue to use the friend suggestions feature from smart devices, Nintendo 3DS, and Wii U.
We sincerely thank players for using this feature over the years.

I was wondering about whether this was going to happen before the Switch successor considering the other consoles had dropped Twitter integration which I assume was due to changes in API costs.

This was expected considering Microsoft and Sony did the same thing, but I'm surprised they're dropping Facebook for Splatoon 3 too. What changed with them?

Saying your relationship remains strong when they're actively trying to take out any functionality with your site is amazing.

Honestly feels like an Onion article.

Glad to see X is going away. Elon really turned the platform into a dumpster fire.

This is a massive blow to Twitter given how popular it is in Japan. Hope Nintendo moves to Threads soon.
Nah, hopefully they stay away from all 3rd-party social media.

Bring back miiverse or nothing.

Hopefully this means they'll eventually decouple the Splatoon plaza from Twitter too.

I'd love if they did. Really felt like they threw the baby out with the bathwater when they canned it, having dedicated game communities exchanging messages was really fun.
Most likely didn’t wanna deal with the costs & headaches of moderating it.

probably, but cutting every kind of social sharing and interaction from the Switch now, and possibly from the Succ. onward, would hurt the perception/brand awereness of their consoles imho

a "closed" console would be the first mistake of the Switch 2 - let's see if this will or now will solved somehow

Was on its way down way before. All social media id crap these days due to algorithms. I just want to see the guys/girls posts. Following a talented team that makes homebrew for nes and the only way I can see their posts is to go into their account. Never gets any updates.

Facebook is just advertising at the moment. Have no idea how anyone wants to be there.

If Nintendo doesn't bring back miiverse, there are simpler alternatives for screenshots/video to whatever social media you use. Nintendo has already shown part of this with Splatoon 3 in the OP, what they could do is allow you to store your screenshots/video on the Cloud, you then download them from your smartphone via your Nintendo Account, and then you can go and upload the screenshot/video to whatever social media it is that you use.

This is one method that doesn't involve having to be tied to any social media platform if they don't bring back miiverse.

I'm suprised they haven't yet made an account when Playstation and Microsoft have one each and all 3 are on Instagram. Although it seems PS/Xbox don't have ways to directly send screenshots/videos to Threads. You have to use their respective apps, which they most likely prefer anyway.

Nintendo already has means to directly send Screenshots/Videos to your Smartphone/PC, but I can see them updating their online app or making a new one entirely as another method. I think only Splatoon is the series that placed high importance on the custom drawing feature of Miiverse. What they can do is just have the Splatoon 4 service of their NSO app have a section completely dedicated to drawings where users can Like/Report on them, like the Smash Ultimate section of the app has with videos.

I expect Switch 2 to use the NSO mobile app to more easily move screenshots and video from the console to other device.

Elon going crazy with Twitter probably heavily discourage Nintendo from leveraging a 3rd party solution in the future.

Big "please don't leave me mommy" energy right there. Downright embarassing.

Now, if only Nintendo (and all the other brands) could be courageous enough to stop giving that company thousands every month to keep their golden :poop:, that'd be great.

I don’t think it would hurt the perception/brand awareness that bad honestly. There are current ways to use social sharing & interaction even if you have to do a few more steps.

If I'm real, I don't think they even pay for those. Musk literally just gives them out for free to any account past 1 mil.

Blue checks yes, but gold ones requires you to spend a certain amount in ads to get it from what I remember. Or am I wrong?

Then again, everything has always been so muddy regarding blue checks, I'm probably misremembering things 🤷‍♂️

It looks like the tweet is deleted.

I went to look, and they reposted it but with some extra words and then I noticed the community note which points out that, "This is in direct response to X changing their API. Specifically, X is charging companies upwards of $40,000 or more per month to access its API. Sony's PlayStation and Microsoft's Xbox already removed integration with X last year." with sources added.

I then looked at the replies and people are pointing out that because they got community noted, they deleted the tweet and reposted to avoid the community note and then it appeared again.

It was interesting as an experiment, but I think, ultimately, Nintendo is not wanted arbators of the social network. It would basically boil down to how they manage the network itself and the things people say within it. They

I doubt think that they want that kind of smoke that would come with the moderation.

For someone who hates social media, this decisions doesn't bother me.
For people who use it, it's of course not so nice.

No that just means they get one by default if they already spent that much on ads ($1K USD/month)
