Furukawa. On 2 April, we announced the details of the Nintendo Switch 2 and launched the lottery on the My Nintendo Store, which resulted in a huge number of applicants - approximately 2.2 million in Japan alone. However, this is far more than we had previously anticipated, and the number of Nintendo Switch 2 consoles that My Nintendo Store will be able to deliver on 5 June has been exceeded by a large margin. It is therefore very unfortunate that a significant number of customers will not be able to win when we announce the winners tomorrow, 24 April.
In order to avoid the hassle of re-entering the lottery for those who did not win in the first lottery sale, the My Nintendo Store will automatically carry over those who did not win in the first lottery sale to the second lottery sale. However, we will not be able to respond to all the applications received, even if we include the quantity from the second lottery sale. We sincerely apologise for not being able to meet your expectations despite our advance preparations.
We are currently taking steps to meet this demand, including further strengthening our production system. As for product shipments, from tomorrow, 24 April onwards, game shops and online shops nationwide will sequentially begin accepting reservations or lottery sales of the Nintendo Switch 2 console (for details, please check the information provided by each retailer). The My Nintendo Store will also continue to sell the console after the launch date (details will be provided at a later date). With the cooperation of our retailers, we will continue to ship the Nintendo Switch 2 and make every effort to deliver as many Nintendo Switch 2 units as possible to everyone.
We are planning to produce and ship a considerable number of Nintendo Switch 2 in the future. We are very sorry that it will take us some time to meet your expectations.

This is a huge number when we take in account the requirement of NSO subscriber and 50h+ game time on a game.

Assuming they cant send more than 30-40% that is a launch day of at least 600k no? I am assuming the best honestly the true number would be 10-15% so max 300k.

Also this news will probably push people into preparing a side preorder now.

That number is wild. But yeah there was no way they could meet demand at launch no matter how much they prepared.

All the japanese artists I follow on X started posting stuff like "I'm never going to win", the level of demand for this thing is unprecedented.

I mean, there is a (likely heavy subsidized) japan-only model that's cheaper than the internationa model. So price issues might not be too important in the japanese market.
True, but you have to remember that the yen being weak against the dollar doesn't mean that 50k yen is cheap by Japanese standards, its still a hefty sum because they get their salaries in yen.

The 6m sales in the first month doesn’t seem that outlandish now 😭

We might genuinely be gearing up for a massive launch

It's still extremely expensive in Japan based on Japanese purchasing power.

Mind you, i didn't say it was cheap, just cheaper. ^^

If they only had the international model available at the current price, i'm sure there wouldn't be that many lottery applications.

Wii U shipped 3.34m LTD in Japan, so i think any fears of a Wii U level disaster for NSW2 can be laid to rest upon hearing this news.

Switch 2 is 50% more expensive than Switch 1 in Japan, just like in the US. To give you an idea, it is launching at the same price as the PS5 with disc-drive did.

This an impressive number, but also a testament to how much Nintendo has strengthen the connection to its customers over the last couple years. My Nintendo, NSO, Vouchers, Nintendo World etc.

There are so many benefits for people who really are invested in the eco system nowadays. So yeah this kind of demand is unprecedented.

This could be the first major sign that Nintendo has finally gotten their own Playstation style brand. Where they can continue to work with an established console brand and no longer have to do any changes to their console branding. The Switch has become a major brand in itself with staying power over several generations, just like Playstation was for Sony.

Of course subscribe to a lottery doesnt equal an actual purchase and it coukd be that the My Nintendo Store has seen the highest volume of "preorders" but still...I cant wrap my head around this number :|

Japan market is a Nintendo monopoly since years ago adn their software (sales-wise) is a tier above everyone else besides Dragon Quest or Monster Hunter.

Switch 2 is a huge upgrade from Switch 1 in everything

So its normal there is a huge demand for this console.

Something something "gonna be the 3DS all over again"
People often gloss over how the 3DS had zero worthwhile software, same for Wii U

Also software output and lacklustre marketing, meanwhile NS2 is doing well at all fronts

Nintendo could literally sell 2-3 million Switch 2 units day 1 in Japan if they had inventory.

Not since the PS2 have I seen such fervor for a piece of hardware.

Completely well earned.

This also tells us that there's at least 2.2 million accounts in Japan with 50+ hours played and 1+ year of currently active Nintendo Online-subs, since those were the conditions to enter the lottery.

It launched with Mario Brothers U, and you can't say it wasn't worthwhile when the Switch version sold over 16 million.

There’s nuance to this, it’s undeniable that it wasn’t a very exciting game to launch your console with, especially since it came relatively soon after 3 other similar entries in the series

Not just Mario, there was also a little game called Monster Hunter there on launch-day, even had it's own bundle.

Does the subscription need to be active? I read it was 1+ year overall, even if it was not currently active.
Yes, needs to be active, all the way throughout the pre-order process as well.

That is some insane level of demand. Yeah a PS1 to PS2 situation is unfolding. I don't think this level of demand will slow down anytime soon.

Unless i remember wrong, the EU/German My Nintendo Store required an active sub on the day of preordering.

Though i guess requirements may be slightly different for each region, because the EU/German store also required at least 2 years of uninterrupted sub time.

And the Japanese lifetime sales of Wii U is 3.3 millions. Switch is not going to do a Wii U situation for people thinking about that.
I am surprised to see those comments, was it even in question? Switch 2 success in Japan is like the safest bet you can ever make on a console.

I personally never saw a failure as being on the cards, but yes, there have been plenty of doom mongering all over the internet, maybe not specifically about Japan though.

That is only compared to the 3DS game that came out in July 28, 2012. The Wii version released in November 15, 2009.

Definitely. If they actually had the supply it would probably pass the launch number handily if these preorders were true.
This is just their own Online store, the regular major retailers (Yodobashi, Bic, Amazon, Rakuten) will all get their own separate allotment.

That tweet putting up numbers as well, the demand is real. People thirsty to spent money on the Switch 2 and be there Day 1.

Cant blame them, when its launching with the first new MK Title in over a decade.

If Nintendo had the stock, I feel like they could easily do 7m+ for Switch 2 on launch day alone (if we go with a 3:2:2 split for America|Europe|Japan). Too bad about the stock situation. It'll likely still break records for biggest console launch.

2.2 million? WTF!

For context (launch aligned sales of 3DS, PSV, WIU, PS4 and NSW in Japan; source: Media Create):

Same as above but with Famitsu data:

Like I keep saying, the Switch 2 will sell more in Japan alone than the Wii U did in it's entire life. Further proof that Nintendo absolutely fucking nailed the Switch 2 reveal in Japan.

2.2 million people entered the lottery for a Switch 2 on the MyNintendo Store alone. This doesn't even count the usual Japanese retailers, which is what Famitsu actually tracks.

It's safe to say Switch 2 will 100% outsell Game Gear (1.78m) and Xbox 360 (1.615m) in Japan.

Probably Dreamcast as well (2.49m).
