Thanks for doing this. Some thoughts:

Looks like Dreamlight Valley is doing well in all 3 regions.
Forza has cemented itself as one of the pillars of Xbox's 1st party titles.
Game Pass titles in each region: US - 15, UK - 17, Japan - 21.
Of the 3 Japanese tiles from TGS that were dropped into Game Pass, Ni No Kuni is the only one that's in these rankings.

It's curious that in Mexico Gears 5 is at 15th, Gears 4 at 29th and even Gears 3 is on top 50 at 49th.

Crazy how Gears of War has a huge relative popularity there compared to any other country.

Gears is like Fortnite levels of popular in Mexico.

Forza Horizon has established itself as one of the pillars of Xbox's 1st party titles.

I think this is more correct.

Forza motosport on the other hand does very low numbers

The last Forza Motorsport came out 5 years ago and was delisted a year ago. Before that, it maintained good numbers.

It does decent numbers for a sim racing game when it comes out - been 5 years since 7 and it's delisted even. I think the reboot next year will do solid numbers. Either way Motorsport is important in the sense that new engine technology and car models are done for it and then transferred to Horizon, but of course Horizon is the bigger game with wider reach

I updated the charts. Overwatch 2 debuts as the 6th most played game in the US and the UK. Game also has over 600k viewers on Twitch at the moment.

Twitch numbers are obviously inflated because of the drops but it is still a very impressive figure.

I have less context about the 6th place on both Xbox chart, what do you make of the launch ?

It's probably too early because the Most Played charts have some delay (I'm not sure if it's 4 or 5 days, I think today was the first time OW2 jumped from its previous OW position). So it could go up again in the next days (like it's usually the case when a game appears for the first time) or go lower. We also don't have Steam numbers obviously. But I think the game will perform well because Overwatch 1 was already doing well in the charts despite being old (almost 6.5 years).

I would expect Blizzard to communicate numbers at some point.

Kinda to be expected. Theres clearly a rush on new F2P games but retaining people is difficult. Your not just creating reasons to log in each day but need to compete with other games for that users time.
Its also just not a good enough game imo. Its janky and wierd to control, and its lacking in its stage and mode variety. Its IP power carried it to an explosive opening but its not enough to keep people playing

Multiversus is now at #49 and will most likely be out of the top 50 completely next week.
Being out of top 50 so soon is a bad signal for a f2p of this caliber and in UK is already out of top 50.

Maybe is doing relatively better on Playstation, PS base of players seems more eclectic than Xbox's.

Totally, but it's done especially poorly compared to other recent F2P games like Halo Infinite and Fall Guys. I would argue this is a particularly poor performance from a F2P game on Xbox.

Gears 5, for instance, had much better player numbers 2 years after launch and it was not F2P. Same for Forza Motorsport 7 and that one wasn't even on Game Pass. It was on the top 50 until 2020 if I recall correctly.

Brawlhalla, which was a very similar game but without any big IPs attached to it also did much better, so it can't be simply because Multiversus is a fighting game. It seems that people don't like the game much or find it mediocre.

I agree with your analysis, that seems to be what's going on.

Yes, Overwatch jumped from #21 (just behind Halo) to #6, but it had been gaining players for like an entire month in anticipation of Overwatch 2, because the game was usually in the #30-40 range before September. Overwatch was never "dead" at all, or at least not on Xbox.

And speaking of Halo: Infinite's performance on Xbox and PC couldn't be more different. The last content update the game got was in May (5 months ago) and still the game has always been at around #15 on Xbox. Goes to show how massive the IP still is amongst Xbox players and how PC players really don't care much about it.

More PC-centric games like Rust got banished from the Xbox top 50 in two weeks but remain insanely popular on Steam. Very interesting stuff. Counter Strike on the 360 also did poorly.

It could be, yes.

It could be, yes.

On Halo, there are two big reasons for that besides brand:

The first one being that the actual gameplay for Infinite is almost universally considered great with many calling it the best Halo has ever been from that angle. What is killing the game that it's a Live Service Game with no service outside of charging you for the color blue. Not to mention the many, many bugs that haven't been fixed even closed to a year later. You know things are bad when the Halo community envy Splatoon 3's roadmap.

The second, PC simply has more choices than Xbox. You not only have your CODs, but also TF2, Counter-Strike, and many more shooters that I can't remember off the top of my head. So there is no reason to play Infinite (an incomplete, bug-ridden, horrible GAAS that charges for simple things) over almost anything else.

There are games for everyone, looking for that top I don't play 99% of those games. Free games are a pass for me, AC,COD,Sports idem , but that is the beauty of gamepass there are games for everyone, I am playing Fuga memories of steel , the game isn't at any top but there a few players that are enjoying the game.

Overwatch 2 stopped at 3rd place, I thought would reach number 1.
The only games that have reached number 1 in the last 4 years are Fortnite, Gears 5, Warzone, Modern Warfare, Elden Ring and Halo Infinite. Overwatch 2 did very well but reaching number 1 is very hard.

Considering the game hit 25 million players mark overall it was kinda a given for me that would be number one. I'm negatively surprised.

Overwatch 2 still the 3rd most played game after Fornite and Warzone. It seems it's perfoming extremely well so far. Still often the top game on Twitch too.

Early Access (pre-order) Campaign of Modern Warfare II Campaign enters at:
#4 (US)
#7 (UK)
#6 (JP)

Overwatch 2 still at:
#3 (US)
#5 (UK)
#4 (JP)

Persona 5 Royal enters at:
#27 (US)
#24 (UK)
#2 (JP)

Gotham Knights enters at:
#23 (US)
#28 (UK)
#32 (JP)

A Plague Tale Requiem at:
#22 (US)
#15 (UK)
#13 (JP)

The charts just updated again. Persona 5 Royal is now at #18 in the US.

Indeed. Seems it's doing extremely well for a JPRG.

Charts haven been updated again:

Persona 5 Royal:
#16 (US)
#18 (UK)
#2 (JP)

Early Access (pre-order) Campaign of Modern Warfare II:
#3 (US)

#5 (JP)

Overwatch 2:

#5 (UK)
#4 (JP)

Gotham Knights:
#15 (US)
#20 (UK)

It seems that charts will now be updated more frequently? Good news if so.

Also Overwatch 2 has already dropped two places.

Modern Warfare II takes the crown in the US.

Elden Ring about to leave the top 50 in the UK.

Overwatch 2 still perfoming extremely well (#4/#5/#5)

skyrim is never leaving the top 50 until the next Elder Scrolls, impressive how popular that game is.

CoD is definitely on another level. OW 2 being f2p wasn't able to claim first place, CoD being a paid game was.
I suspect a considerable percentage (possibly even a majority) of OW2 players are on PC, whereas the vast majority of COD players are on console.

Not to mention that MWII was a huge launch even by COD standards.

Charts updated.

High on Life very high:
(US) #4
(UK) #6
(JP) #20

Overwatch 2 still doing great:
(US) #7
(UK) #10
(JP) #6

High on life is also 7th in the top paid games, 4th most played is really impressive though, only the big mainstream games normally open that high, like Elden Ring did back in February for example.

High on Life doing really great. Lot's of people saying good things about it, after the update.

High on Life is one of those games where the Metacritic scores don't really align with user reviews/sales.

Current Xbox Metacritic (17 reviews) = 61
Current Xbox User Metacritic (278 reviews) = 8.2

Current PC Metacritic (17 reviews) = 67
Current PC User Metacritic (218 reviews) = 7.7

Steam (2,236 reviews) = 89% positive user rating

High on Life is the Venom (2018) of video games.

My theory is that the discrepancy in user score (extremely high) and metacritic score (quite low) is basically caused by there being a strong self selection pressure going on. People aren't buying or playing the game if they're significantly turned off by it's humour in the trailers/marketing, while critics at various outlets play the game regardless of whether they hate that stuff. And quite a few reviews complained about that aspect of it. Not that there aren't other flaws too, certainly, but that does seem to be a sticking point for many.

Conversely, this is piggybacking off a very popular TV show so obviously there are a lot of people for whom that side of things is a significant benefit. I've seen quite a few people who really like the jokes and there were several clips that went viral before the launch. The game has some fun despite being pretty unpolished and technically underwhelming. Ofc lack of polish has always been a big barrier to critic review scores too.

High on Life performance is truly remarkable. Looks like the idea of a game from the Rick and Morty guy is way more appealing than I thought.

One thing I’ve been noticing for years is that huge single player titles come and go but Bethesda games are always in that top 30-20 spot, Cyberpunk came and went, same as Valhalla, Odyssey and Origins, Witcher 3, Hogwarts and Elden Ring. They were and still are extremely popular but they haven’t had the lasting power of Bethesda’s big games like Skyrim and Fallout 4.

Also really impressed by Forza Horizon 5, I remember 4 being in that top 10-15 spot for over 2 years and it seems like 5 will do the same, Forza Horizon is definitely a bigger franchise than Halo by now.

Yep and hope nobody tries top make this a console war but also interesting to watch how over the years they've arguably kind of eclipsed Gran Turismo franchise. They've done it with just relentless execution, and releasing on a much more frequent cadence than PD. Playground is really good.

Updated.

Looks like a good result for Exoprimal.

It's 2023 and Black Ops 2 (2012) and Modern Warfare 2 (2009) are back.

Will not last, but more people playing Exoprimal than Overwatch 2 and Destiny 2 on Xbox this week is at some level an achievement for Capcom.
