Mobile (Gacha) Market Tracking

September Sensor Tower is here. aside from HSR and L&DS, everything either had a small increase or a big drop. WuWa dipped below 7M

I really hate how this guy pushes this out the first day of the next month because some games aren't even updated yet and still have the previous month's (i.e. August) numbers. (and yes, this extends to last month's numbers so sometimes it's a July vs August comparison when it's labeled August vs September)

I wonder how much of this is L&D undercutting their female demographics. L&D has really spiked these past few months and it would be normal to expect it to impact the broader market given how fast and big it became, and it's growth is localized mostly to CN where we see the other movements.
Certainly a possibility, after how Fontaine shaped up after Wriothesley and with Kinich being the only possible male character (Il Capitano too, but we don't know when) for almost a year, that might be a source of bleed.
In addition to Love & Deepspace, with the rise of games like Light & Night and launch of Beyond The World, people interested in male characters definitely have more options than the nothing of before.
I imagine if Infinity Nikki has a successful launch, that could be the biggest hit for Hoyo for female players as well (though not the gooners, they already leaving).

Btw based on what people are saying, WuWa seems to have started facing development issues. New story is very short, new area is small and doesn't have alot to do and the patches are now 7 weeks long.

Patches have not had consistent schedules since release. It was 5/8/6/7.

As for the content, it's as large as 1.1 (it's two maps + decent bit of verticality) and story is around as long. So nothing really out of the ordinary going on dev wise. I'd sooner say 1.3 has the most general stuff added since release.

Edit many hours later: I checked, based on the BP, the patch is actually a bit of an odd 6.5ish weeks. Not even a rounded 7. @War Inquisitor So this seems to me like they are kind of... just making it up as they go along for patch lengths.

To this point, the numbers have already changed significantly. WuWa went up by >4M, HSR gained on CN iOS, and so on.

Zenless Zone Zero passed $157.5 million now three months in, according to AppMagic but, much slower than the other Hoyoverse titles.
Meanwhile Genshin Impact has surpassed $6.3 billion for its 4th anniversary, according to AppMagic, but this is the first time it has dipped below $1 billion in a year
Sensor Tower article highlighting Fate/Grand Order's performance for its 9th anniversary. It's still in Japan's top 10 annual games but, it has been steadily declining.

infinity Nikki has surpassed 20M pre-registrations

I've been dead busy to pay much attention but is this just... an open world dress up/Barbie doll gachagame?
Nikki is a series where fashion is the solution to every conflict. If I remember correctly, the trailer had different outfits give her different powers for some puzzle elements. There also seems to be a creature collecting element. Beyond that, the plot of Nikki gets insane from what I understand

Edit:
Arknights passed $500 million in August

I only very briefly played Shining Nikki, but like Astrogamer said, you pretty much "fight" opponents with fashion battles. The crux of the game is collecting clothes and accessories, then creating outfits. Kind of like Style Savvy, in a sense, without the shop management part.

But with Infinity Nikki, we're pretty much transitioning from a FGO-like old-style mobage to a Genshin-era modern game. If the open world design is good, I think it has potential attracting a different audience than Genshin/WW, especially within the female one.

Re: Bang Dream, I'm getting honestly worried about the future of the global/EN server. The current event has you playing in teams of 5 players, except the netcode is even more terrible than usual and some players have received temp bans because the game thinks they are purposely disconnecting to grief others.

The technical state of the game (on global), especially the netcode, has always been mediocre, but ever since their mega-update some months ago, it's been plummeting. Players might be tempted to leave, and then there won't be enough activity/revenue from the server to justify its existence.

One of the people that worked on it is Kentaro Tominaga, a former designer on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and director of its Expansion Pass.

Xilonen seems to have done very well almost everywhere. Yesterday Genshin was #1 in JP and Top 3 in CN iirc

also IGN made a preview of Infinity Nikki

Doesn't look like it got past DNF on CN, and JP hit #1 but looks like it immediately dropped sharply (and under LINE within the same day). Better than recent banners but still seems rather lukewarm for Genshin's past standard.

phones are like PCs, rather than consoles. most phones in the world aren't the top of the line iphones or samsung galaxies, they're phones with half the cpu and gpu performance, at best
the point is that I did not know that you even have to tinker with settings in mobile phone games. I played some games but trying to change anything on mobile screen feels too much.

Like PC games, mobile games (should) have some form of auto-settings to scale games to playable states out the box.

As far as changing settings, it's a lot more rudimentary than pc. Frame rate caps, effect settings, aa, and "resolution" and that's about it

ZZZ is currently 7th in Japan and 27th in CN app rankings due to Burnice banner. How is it compared to previous banners

Seems like a very weak result in CN specifically. Not great in JP either.

Topped off at 3rd and 24th.

And I still get nonstop ads about this game. Grrr! 😖

It performed poorly on the IOS download charts in CN, so they may have given up on marketing here.

it seems they're really trying to push it in america now.

i don't think that will work.

they had everything going for them, and then they decided to make it a generic fan-service gacha game.
nice job.

i still think astaweave will hit almost as large as genshin since thats something new for the genre still and there will hopefully be no copius fanserive so it'll have some mass appeal.
given the massive budgets of these games im suprised at how freely they spent it on zzz.

Wouldn't call it generic gacha (with lot's of fanservice? sure, look at Jane's trailer), but it's clear they had too much faith in tv mode to help diversify the content. Now they temporarely removed it almost completely, and TV mode was a good 30% of the game at launch. 30% of the game is gone and while the combat is great and both story and characters are fun, they're not on the same level as Genshin and HSR so not enough to carry the whole game. It will still do good, just not Genshin/HSR good

regarding astaweave, I wonder if they're smart enough to release it on Switch 2, since like half the audience for that type of game is on nintendo systems. releasing it only on Ps5 would be a huge mistake imo

imo a delay of the switch 2 probably changed their schedule a bit.

getting astaweave and genshin there fast is important.

I feel like MHY's golden child is HSR now. If they port anything it will be that first and foremost.

ZZZ stalled out pretty fast out of the gate, and Genshin is older and losing steam in terms of it's footprint on the market. HSR is their new big cashcow.

more likely that we get both GI and HSR at the same time. GI is still massive and it had that switch port they've been sitting on. could be that it was ready but performance was too awful to release so they've waited until a morepowerful version came out.

Speaking of, Genshin surpassed $5B on mobile in CN alone and is about to surpass $10B globally by 2025 according to niko Partners

Also Blue archive showed player numbers ranked by country. which also made CN players mad because of Taiwan and Hong kong being mentioned as countries. they apologized.

I mean, they specifically ported Genshin Impact to X-Box.
Star Rail is considerably weaker on console (we have data for this) and I imagine the same for PC (this is assumption).

GI’s brand recognition is so much higher.

It losing steam is still more than double whatever star rail is doing.
It’s not just a gacha games.

It’s more like Pokémon and Minecraft now, the merchandising is a monster moneymaker.

Revenue may be close, awareness isn’t, not at all.

Nikke mainland chinese ver soon i guess possibly gonna get announced officially on the 2nd anniversary stream tomorrow

I support this trend (?) of releasing complete versions of GaaS games when they hit their EoL. :)

Now give us "Genshin Impact: Teyvat Chapter" in 3 years miHoYo !
