Tactics Ogre had its US localization canceled back in the day with Enix's first pullout of the US market, apparently it was pretty far along. Fun fact is they also thought about bringing over DQ VI as DW 5.
It's worse than that, Enix pulling out of the US market after their original King Arthur game megabombed also killed US releases for Tenchi Sozo/Terranigma (it was going to be called Genesis here, lol), Mystic Ark (to be retitled 7th Saga II, this one was actually announced iirc) and Torneko 1 (Taloon's Adventure). Nintendo was in talks about picking up some of them (and other later stuff like Star Ocean or Wonder Project J2 on N64) but in the end only did Terranigma in Europe (scrapping the US localization in favor of their own) and Mischief Makers on N64.

There was something of a US mini-crash in 94/95 on SNES/Genesis carts that actually saw a bunch of big Japanese studios close up shop overseas (Square, Enix, Hudson, Taito, Sunsoft, Technos, Data East, Sammy, Telenet, etc) and helped hasten the push to new 32bit CD-ROM options. Missed out on a lot of late SNES releases due to this too.

Seems SE finally remembered what advertising is. There is not a single advertising space on the Yamanote line that isn't dedicated to FF7, even the typical Nintendo CM and Pikmin quiz and news intermissions on the CCTV are back to back FF7 CM. Not sure why they didn't remember to do this with FF16, I guess they thought people would just telepathically know about it or something?

With FF16 I guess they were focusing on the Western Market instead?

Though I wonder if this marketing campaign would lead to higher domestic sales.

Yeah. They started the TV campaign quite early too. I saw the first ads around the 17th iirc.

im 100% sure after this there will never be another square ad in japan until part 3.

its like they are actively trying to kill their franchises there

Guess we know SE expectation regarding what FF can and can't sell in Japan at this point lol.

i noticed too late, sorry

I'm rarely surprised by a big campaign, i've been watching it for so long, but the pikmin 4 campaign really surprised me, there were pikmins everywhere "scary" lol

I wonder if Nintendo will do that big marketing as well for Peach. Feels like it can be surprise hit

The one for Pikmin 4 was big and long, that one had to help the game for sure.

Demo for Despera Drops was released today.

Oh, so Arika did come back as I had assumed. Good to have confirmation.
Arika loves their own developed franchises (see example: Fighting EX Layer), so them sitting out and someone else developing an Endless Ocean game that's not a remake wasn't in the cards.

Rebirth marketing aims at nostalgia even more than Remake. I wonder if that is working in favor of the game. Preorders seems pretty much in line with Final Fantasy XVI despite a larger installed base.

With such a dismemberment of the original, you can hardly expect the second part to stand out better than its predecessor, even if Square Enix probably sees it differently.

I'll admit, I did chuckle when I saw Level-5 managed to delay Fantasy Life i again.

Luigi Mansion 2 April?
It's slated for a Summer release (officially). So unless they pull a Side Order (scheduled for Spring but out this week), it should be a June or July release (August and September are definitely possible, but I'm expecting LM2 to be out earlier).
I think that we aren't mentioning one of the most surprising news from this Direct... The new Sword Art Online game is actually releasing on every platform at the same time, so no more "years later Switch port" for that franchise.
I thought it was that second Aquria game at first, and was confused because the game appeared to run somewhat ok :p
PS5 entered 4th year and the new Jikkyou game still releases only on PS4.
Well, at least it's getting a PS release unlike the more recent Spirits game.

I wonder how well demos for VNs/ADV actually do conversion wise. It strikes me as one of the least likely genres to have fence sitters.

Know the COMG is still a small sample in terms of stores

https://nichebarrier.com/game-comg/2376-final-fantasy-vii-rebirth (100 units with 9 days to go)
https://nichebarrier.com/game-comg/985-final-fantasy-xvi (97 units with 9 days to go)

Unfair comparison but i guess you can try and account for the increased digital ratio and console's.

I wonder what caused the FF brand to decline domestically, it literally used to be a cultural phenomenon.

I see it more as a way to increase visibility than anything else, really.

FF started to decline already on PS2 though. Of course platform choices are factor too but not the sole one. For example FFXV sold way less than XIII in Japan despite PS4 itself selling similarly to PS3
Of course, it also takes a studio and a publisher to mess up the series....and who better to do that than Square Enix.

Well, at least it's getting a PS release unlike the more recent Spirits game.

PS4 game : bought by PS4 owners + PS5 owners
PS5 game : bought by PS5 owners only

I don't have a degree in marketing but I can see the reason why Pawapuro is going to be released on PS4...
