I think that we aren't mentioning one of the most surprising news from this Direct... The new Sword Art Online game is actually releasing on every platform at the same time, so no more "years later Switch port" for that franchise.
What happened to Last Recollection though? This new one is coming out very shortly after that.

Not sure wether you're calling me troll or not. Rewatched the trailer and still looks totally smooth to me.

Nippon Ichi Software missed, in any capacity, yet another Nintendo Direct. Bar Stella Abyss is coming on February 29, it was perfect for a "Coming Soon Software Lineup". If they really want to get close to have a game that sells 200k domestically, live previously stated, they should start trying harder to be part of relevant presentations. Letting the newest game of one of their most talented directors go to waste like this sure doesn't look good.

Also, first time hearing of Crafts & Meister and they seem to be an ex-Capcom joint. Damn, Arika with Endless Ocean and C&M with GB4...ex-Capcom devs doin' good things.

I'm surprised by Gundam and SAO. It won't improve Bandai Namco's sales in Japan, but it was still surprising to see those randomly show up in a Direct.

I'm guessing the other SAO game will be a late port like the others.

So some unlucky employee at Bethesda Latin America accidentually uploaded a trailer for Hi-Fi Rush's PS5 release, and now we know it's coming on March 18th.

Curious to see how this'll do in Japan.

So, I've played the Unicorn Overlord demo. I am thoroughly impressed. Vanillaware have made a game that has good gameplay, great tutorialization, effective UI and amazing graphics. One question remains...... who the hell still cares about Ogre Battle in the year of our goddess 2024?? I appreciate that they're getting some advertising this time around, and the game IS good... but I don't see this doing that much better than 13S did at launch, right?

Bar Stella Abyss was in at least one previous Direct, though? (Or at least I think it was?) I'm guessing you mean it should've been in another one?

Is this

hatsune miku fitness boxing or dlc or another boxing series?

Brand new game with different coat of paint.

Like Fitness Boxing Fist of North Star that just released.

Surprised to not see that Goemon like game localized. Such miss opportunities.T_T

Bar Stella Abyss was announced in November 2023, last direct happened in September 2023. NIS 3 months announcement-release marketing strategy gives very little room for Direct spots, unfortunately.

Surprised at the SAO game being day 1 multiplatform on Switch and also being an online one. You would think, given how stubborn they were with past SAO games, that an online SAO with multiple people would be a no no on Switch.

Pretty sure it's a Dimps game this time around so they are doing it to maximize the playerbase like Dragon Ball Breakers. A more traditional SAO game would hold off until the Switch 2.

Ah, OK. I remembered seeing its premiere and my memory thought it was in a Direct. Given that, you're right that it's a bit weird they didn't include it here, as they usually show up in Directs. Maybe they just decided to save the cash this time around and see how their own marketing does?

Biggest hit of the Direct for me honestly was Epic Mickey lol. I've been wanting this game to get remastered/rereleased for years since I never played the original Wii game. I did play the DS?3DS? second game that played entirely different from the other versions if I remember right.

Fantasy Life having a date, albeit later than expected is good too as that was one of my favorite 3DS games and I had over 100 hours in it. I was surprised the Inzauma Eleven beta wasn't in at least the Japanese direct even though it's supposed to be worldwide.

Epic mickey 3ds was more a kind to the sega era games of Castle of illusion, 2D plataformer.

Last time they showed up in a Japanese Direct was with GrimGrimoire OnceMore in June 2022. Before that it was Disgaea 6 announcement in September 2020, for really obvious reasons.

065./000. [NSW] Tactics Ogre : Reborn <SLG> (Square Enix) {2022.11.11} (¥4.982) - 67.713 / NEW (45.258 <80,83%>)
144./000. [PS4] Tactics Ogre : Reborn <SLG> (Square Enix) {2022.11.11} (¥4.982) - 20.734 / NEW (14.241 <68,46%>)

Considering the graphics do not merit a separate PS5 SKU, I see no issue in selling it on a single SKU that will play on both PS4 and PS5 consoles. That seems like an actual smart decision.

Surely not for the brand awereness nor for the physical presence on the shelves

Now, looking at the PS5 retail software performance so far...it makes sense to not bother with

As for the sales potential, it is pretty remarkable for Nintendo to invest in those niche series.

Endless Ocean 1 & 2 sold below 1m on Wii and did low numbers in Japan:

[WII] Endless Ocean - 17.567 / 47.227
[WII] Endless Ocean 2 - 17.502 / 41.363

It is pretty great all these really niche dead Nintendo series getting new games.

Famicom Detective Club
Advance Wars
Endless Ocean
Another Code
F-Zero 99(bit of a monkey paw curl but still)

ATLUS fully embracing PS/XBOX/PC on all series now. I’m curious about the next mainline EO game platforms (when/if it enters production)

Yeah any direct auto loses 2 points if no Etrian Odyssey VI.

Its been almost 6 years since you teased it Atlus.

Ogre Battle is quite a bit different from Tactics Ogre in terms of gameplay.

I just realized that Fantasy Life i says "other platforms undecided" on its website and they specifically call this version the "Nintendo Switch Version." Seems like it's going to be multiplatform down the line. Was this always on the site and I just missed it until now?

I feel like mobile is probably more likely than anything tbh.

My expectations were low but holy fuck.

Still shocked we actually got a Switch-exclusive Samba de Amigo and Super Monkey Ball game... but somehow not Sonic.

The latter thankfully feels like a long time wrong finally corrected; we never got a Wii U-exclusive Super Monkey Ball game (let alone at launch) which GC, Wii, and 3DS got, with DS and GBA getting their own mid-life. Somehow they made a VITA-exclusive instead, ironically around the time Wii U launched. I remember folks speculating the Banana Splitz rating was for a Wii U game.

But seriously, WHY not Sonic at this point?
There’s no reason to make Sonic exclusive.

The games sell everywhere in good numbers

Ogre Battle is quite a bit different from Tactics Ogre in terms of gameplay.

Very different, look guys:

armies move in real time on a map and movement is free in ogre battle, dragon force and unicorn overlord, on the contrary, armies movements in tactics ogre are limited to the squares of the checkerboard/chessboard and round by round

There are still a lot of differences between these two styles of games but I hope it's more understandable now...or not :p

Damn, now i want play dragon force :p

Thanks, not as versed in mobile game companies. Yeah surprised with Sony here too. Guess they are relatively cash poor.
A few others I noticed:

71. Mixi
92. CyberAgent (Cygames)
153. DeNA
159. Colopl
241. Tomy

I'm a little surprised Sony's not in the top 300 though?

Found this:

"This new data ranks Japanese companies on wealth and subtracts out debt."

"Sony is not featured due to its significant amount of debt."

"It also reported that the company (Nintendo) has maintained zero debt, a policy it has followed since a major downturn in 1965 nearly led to its bankruptcy."

Apparently they're still working on the global Inazuma beta now. So it might still make March.

Also.. did we know that Inazuma had a separate RPG system outside of the soccer rpg stuff in it??? L5 and adding multiple game genres inside of games no longer surprises me but I don't think they've ever shown anything like this??

And the Unicorn Overlord demo will come to other platforms in about 27 hours.

202./000. [PS5] Tactics Ogre : Reborn <SLG> (Square Enix) {2022.11.11} (¥4.982) - 13.608 / NEW (10.112 <63,76%>)
Tactics Ogre is very, very significantly NOT Ogre Battle. TO is a grid based, turn based SRPG with menu command based combat. Ogre Battle, on the other hand is a real time strategy game (with pause) where you create groups of units that autobattle when they bump into enemies on the field.

Tactics Ogre was so popular it spawned an entire genre. Ogre Battle was so unpopular you didn't even know it existed possibly

Ogre Battle (SFC) still did 400k in Japan, which wasn't too far off from Tactics Ogre (SFC) at ~550k iirc.

You know, perception can be a funny thing, I was about to write a post about how Ogre Battle gets less shots at the apple in general but TO is only a remaster of a remake ahead of it.

OB has a sequel in OB 64. Tactics ogre has a prequel in Knights of Lodis. Both got ports to the PSX/Saturn. OB has a spinoff on the Neo Geo Pocket Color, the only game never to make it out of Japan in some form. Tactics ogre got a remake on the PSP, and a remaster of that remake this gen.

Another bit of research just made me angry at how much better the 3DS and Wii U VC's are in Japan. Mrrgrrgrr. Tactics Ogre had its US localization canceled back in the day with Enix's first pullout of the US market, apparently it was pretty far along. Fun fact is they also thought about bringing over DQ VI as DW 5.

Surprised at the SAO game being day 1 multiplatform on Switch and also being an online one. You would think, given how stubborn they were with past SAO games, that an online SAO with multiple people would be a no no on Switch.

I think it is easier to understand. if you remember previous SAO sales performance with no switch.

Both Gundam Breaker and SAO last sales was abysmal that can easily lead to the end of the IP. Thats why the devs went out of the way to add Switch to ensure there is chance the game can survive this time.

Which is really strange in the case of NIS there considering how much they benefit during first 3 years of switch with synergy with ninty and multiple push from direct or even my nintendo. Disgaea 7 for example got my nintendo sweepstakes collab.

Feel like their release date is not well hitting direct release date nicely.
