Media Create Sales: Week 5, 2024 (Jan 29 - Feb 04)

Alright sales for Hardware.

Software is a bit meh, though. Not unexpected, but still...

Back to Mario and Momotaro domination since there's no new major PS release this week.

Switch HW sales seem to have reached saturation point, PS5 doing okay all things considered.

Temporary formatting until Chris' PC gets out of prison for trying to hack the Media Create servers is fixed:

That's a pretty big drop for Persona 3 Reload even by JRPG standards. It will be interesting to see sellthrough later, if it' still 60-80% they might struggle to shift all the stock.

Just under 20% increase for Switch HW WoW. It keeps trucking, wonder how the Switch 2 announcement (when it happens) will affect the baseline.

Kinda surprised that persona leg is worse than Shiren. I thought despite the game being jrpg. The leg drop should not be this harsh because Persona IP power.

This really give little vibe like automata and replicant. The fans simply love Persona 5 and not the whole persona IP.

That was a really important bounce back for PS5 hitting 40k this week. If it can average 40k we're looking at another 2M+ year for it.

Why did PS5 sales grow WoW when the new games released the week before??? Such a puzzling device...

Anyway, decent hardware sales. Software is quite low however. But it is what it is, a quiet week.

Chris mentioned above but it might have been due to a holiday/three day weekend.

Given it's rankings, I was expecting more from HSR 2.0. Or maybe I was expecting too much but it's odd to see it below Genshin which is on week two of its CNY patch.

I'm starting to wonder what the final tally for the Switch in Japan is going to be. We already know that it's ahead of the DS (I cannot remember the number off the top of my head. 33,000,000+)but what is it going to end up at?

38,000,000?
39,000,000?
40,000,000?

Persona 5 Royal had a harsh 90% drop back then. It is overall a frontloaded series, which isn't surprising if you look at the genre and price.
Good legs. I wonder whether it will be able to reach 150k at retail when it's all said and done.
Shiren suffers from shortages, restocks have been happening this week so you will see the game climb at the next report.

16k retail (maybe 21-22k including digital) is not an impressive result. NSMBWii had more of the double weekly numbers in the same week in 2010 - just as a small reminder ;)

New Super Mario Bros. Wii had an explosive start but plateaud very early in its lifecycle. By August 2010 it was already selling below 5k. The same could happen with Wonder, of course, but previous Switch games showed that evergreens typically have much stronger legs.

Looks like Nintendo broke the usual pattern for the February Direct, no Direct at all last week or this week.

At this point I don't even think they need one anymore. Just reveal Switch 2 in March and then do a Direct where you show off stuff for both machines from that point on.

will it be a head-to-head for the whole year, between Switch and PS5?
With the main difference that PS5 seems suffering YoY way earlier than the Switch did/is doing

The lack of a Direct is really weird. Penny's Big Breakaway is finished and launching very soon and has no date so I was really certain it would be released today after the Direct.

There's been some "they're waiting on Xbox to do their announcement before doing a Direct" talk but that makes very little sense as

1. Pentiment is an incredibly niche title with no financial potential
2. Hi-Fi Rush cannot run to a satisfactory extent on the Switch 1 as heavily implied by... The devs directly stating that they could not accomplish this on Xbox One.

Not talking about Nintendo, it is way broader than that. JP publishers output beyond March is completely unknown.

Publishers could just do Ys X social media announcements as well.

It's not as if there's anything that urgently needs to come for the Switch.

The third-party manufacturers themselves are responsible for the lack of support.

Evergreen Mario never stop jumping the chart. Anyone underestimating Wonder legs is just ignorant at this point.

We don't need this back and forth every week/every thread. In general you don't need to respond to every post you disagree with, and you can express an opinion without trying to provoke other people.

"Mario Wonder is disappointing, NSMB Wii is better"
*Leaves thread*

BTW, recently saw this interview with the creator of El Shaddai, not really much of financial info, but there's interesting tidbits, including talk about the development and porting to Switch (which took 4 years!) and also about their newest game.

Listen it's clear that Super Mario Wonder is the most disappointing release in the history of video gaming and that millions of copies will be destroyed because of its immense over printing and complete lack of demand. We don't need to keep going over it.
