There's retelling the past, and there's promoting it. While one cannot be sure without seeing the content which way it falls, him saying this guy (who was a dyed-in-the-wool imperialist that advocated for invasion/colonization of Korea and is venerated by the right wing of Japan) was a major inspiration draw for the entire game is making the odds super-high for the latter being true, which... yeah, NO to all that.

Also, there's more to the Meiji era that this one dude's line of thinking, but you wouldn't know it if we take what we're being told at face value, so its faithfulness to the history is already in question to begin with.
My understanding is that Yoshida Shoin is venerated pretty unilaterally within Japan, not just the right wing. His influence is integral to bringing about modernization in Japan and his thoughts encompass a lot of what the Meiji Restoration was about, such as studying abroad and promoting enrichment, with a primary goal of wanting to prevent something like the Opium war in China occurring to Japan. He embodies a lot of the resentment against the shogunate which was seen as corrupt and stuck in the past which causes the Boshin war (which is from my understanding, the conflict presented in RotR). His disciples go on to be key players of the Meiji Restoration including Japan's first prime minister.

To me, this seems like a culture clash. Japan still sees the conquest of Korea and China as a means to an end to defend itself from being subjugated by western powers. It was and still is considered the logical conclusion to make to ensure Japan would be able to sustain itself as a global power at the time. Those outside of Japan see it as what brought about the brutal Japanese Imperialism and the suffering that it caused as well as one of the antagonists to WWII. Japanese people tend to focus on his teachings outside of imperialism, while non Japanese like to denounce him for his imperialistic views.

It's extremely easy to just say "and X view from him was unfortunately really bad" this is a pretty terrible argument.

George Washington is pretty revered in the US and for good reason. Him not running for a third term is probably the basis of America's success as a nation and this is after he defeated the British to even establish the country in the first place. Yet, it's very easy for liberals to say "despite all the good he did, George Washington was extremely racist and held slaves that he tortured like other slave owners."

Thinking the conquering of Korea or China was necessary is also just......... Extremely right-wing. It's a stupid idea that lead to millions of deaths for no reason. You're just arguing that Japan is very right wing and people think it was right to value being a global power over Korean lives.

I think a better defense is just laziness from Team Ninja. Most creatives barely research the subject they're making art on. The Last Temptation of Christ is made by one of the five most acclaimed directors in film history and basically has 0 understanding of any of its subject matter. Kubrick barely skimmed through books he adapted. The recent Napoleon film had Ridley Scott implying that he didn't bother to do research because historians weren't actually there.

Good for Spike Chunsoft being able to resupply quickly it also maintains a high position on the eShop,

No doubt we can start to wonder if The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island will end up over 500K lifetime on the Switch and early signs are pointing to yes.

Physical could surpass 200K by end of the year easily and due to shortages and high digital sales 350K+ is entirely possible this year alone before they even start to seriously discount it.

Considering their top selling physical title in Japan is an Attack on Titan 3DS game with around 400K lifetime sales, we are talking about a major hit here.

There is also Ark: Survival Evolved which is likely to continue to sell well this year, and should easily clear 200K across physical and digital on the Switch by 2025.

RAIN CODE which didn't quite manage 100K+ sales physically so far but with digital is likely to end up more successful than any single SKU of the Danganronpa franchise. Natsumon! also is another decent performance for them in Japan.

No doubt with Kadokawa focusing on growing their gaming business in the coming years. So I expect strong support from Spike Chunsoft on the Successor and Elden Ring would be a great candidate for a million seller on the successor as there is still a huge audience that doesn't own PC/PS and a lot of people who would double dip.

Could be that overtime they overtake some of the other big third parties that have decided to totally forsake their home markets in terms of major investments.

GEO also shows big second week drop for Persona and Granblue.
__

Looking at Like a Dragon (basically not) charting at US and European PS Store January charts and Granblue having very big share at (Asian) steam store it turns steam has turned into far bigger threat for PlayStation than steam deck which would take away sales from Switch. With recent results for From Software games this must be true even for Japan and the continually declining share Sony has there.

(For example Suika's 4M sales)
It was at 5M in mid December.
Maybe I'm out the loop here but what are these "and many more" titles you speak of? Putting aside Ronin and DD (will they actually sell well?) I've been under the impression that PS5's release slate post April is pretty much non existent at this point.
There's also Stellar Blade, but I can't think of any others.

In combination with Sony's upcoming multiplatform strategy, Playstation will become even less attractive.

Steam doesn't seem to be that much popular in Japan either, judging by Steam review language ratios at least.

Granblue for example only has 475 Japanese reviews out of a total of 20,000. Compare that to something like German which has over 5000 reviews.

I would say it’s difficult to say using review totals. Regardless, it is a problem as long as PS continues to struggle in JP. As more games come to the system day/date & SIE puts more games on there; Steam will continue siphoning off marketshare.

LoveR and LoveR Kiss have sold 70k copies according to a Automaton interview, they also mention expanding to new platforms.

──I see. To be honest, how well have "LoveR" and "LoveR Kiss" sold?
Yoshimi Yasuda (Executive Producer):Cumulative sales of ``LoveR'' have just exceeded 70,000 copies. This is about one-third of the previous record sales for works in the same genre. However, we believe that it is possible to continue to increase sales by making attractive updates and expanding to other platforms.

If we put aside the clickbait title of the news

Good God, that's disgusting. Into the bin with this game

I remember some year ago Ark was imported on market sites and all copies were sold, for comparison, there were a lot of games available (for example I sold NTSC-U Turrican and Ninja Warriors again for Switch) but the only one always sold out was Ark.
Seems like it's very popular here.

Even in the Meiji era, Japan was not a monolith, and they most certainly weren't at any point up to now.

The Taisho era is noted for people recording their worries about the fate of their society, as young people were being taken in by jingoism that had not been present at such a level prior to the Meiji era and identifying the works of Yoshida and those like him as a direct cause. And those worries carried forward into the Showa era via opposition to colonial actions of Japan and their alliance with Germany in WWII (which was suppressed through fear of sedition charges and the death penalty).

There’s plenty of art and literature preceding, during and after the Meiji era that did not promote the imperialist ambitions of folks like Yoshida, as well as modern historical fiction that doesn’t promote it either (some even specifically highlighting the negative after-effects and suffering that reinstalling the Emperor represented).

I know some Japanese folks personally who believe that the Meiji Restoration was a mistake and Japan would have been better off had the shogunate remained temporarily and that the country had modernized differently (probably by phasing the shogunate out without the return of the royals to power), developing into something like a Japanese republic.

Don’t go climb aboard that train of thought you're entertaining, it leads to a dead end.

Yeah, the day one release on Steam and the successes of Granblue, Yakuza and Persona 3 Reload are related. I don't see Cygames and Sega renounce to it in the future unless they are obliged to do so by contract.

There's a possibility that all mid to small-tiers Japanese studios will follow suit. That might also hurt Nintendo in Japan.

Direct might be dropped in a few hours. Will probably give a better idea of the Q2 line up.

Maybe it will be delayed to not clash with the Xbox thing. I'm not sure Nintendo works this way but we'll see.
If it's delayed, it will be by a week, suspense will be unbearable in a few hours 😬

On the contrary, due to optimizations for low/mid tier PC , more games may start to come to Switch/Switch 2.

I wonder if Steam will ever reach TVs. As it stands, I think having the convinience of TV and not having to fiddle with any settings gives consoles an audience thats different from PC even with the same games.
This is an excellent question. If that's indeed Gabe's strategy, then it will directly compete with Microsoft's vision for the future of Xbox/Microsoft Gaming.

That is not necessarily a metric for success. Why buy a Switch 2 to play the games that you can already play on your low-spec PC? Sure the libraries might overlap significantly but there is this one device that must be bought first.

If all the games are released on both PC and Switch, it is likely that not only the PC but also the Switch will steal that share from the PS.
And exclusives sell Nintendo consoles. But right now, if you only have a Switch console, you cannot play some games like Yakuza/FF16.
But when all the games are released on both PC and Switch, the choice is easy if you also want to play Nintendo games.
And also even though hardware sales decrease, increasing software sales with more third parties can balance this.
Note: Also I didn't realize we were only talking about mid to small tier games. If it's just mid tier and small tier, it almost doesn't bring anything to Nintendo, you're right.

Apparently the recent Sonic adventure releases on Japanese Steam are selling well.

This is funny! PlayStation dying is now giving rise to PC, which, if it grows enough in popularity, could be a counterattack against Nintendo's Japan-domination. Which in turn might lead to a, further away, future where Nintendo embraces the PC for their games, too. Which, if we're being realistic, is the long-term direction of any entertainment anyway. In the future, hw will become obsole, both because it'll be so small and powerful and cheap, but also because wireless streaming technology will become available worldwide. At that point, having your own hw makes no sense.

This is really long-term, though, but it is funny how we're seeing a rise in PC-popularity in Japan right about as Sony has been opening up to it, too.

I disagree, Nintendo doesn't really have the luxury of going multiplatform, with mobile being an exception. Their entire business model revolves around having basically a complete lockdown over how their games can be played. They develop software almost exclusively* for their hardware, much like how Apple develops its operating systems exclusively for its devices.

I do agree though that the Japanese PC gaming renaissance has been beautiful to see. Hopefully this also means we'll be seeing more doujin/indie games being produced and localized.

Quite a drop from the series high 200k of Photo Kano:

But iirc Reco Love absolutely cratered, don't think we ever got an update for it (I've got it at ~27k from Media Create data). Which, even Amagami port did better (~46k from Media Create).

So I suppose a positive is that at least the IP 'bounced back' a bit.

I guess that must be the record they're referring to.

On a somewhat related note it's still funny that the Photokano artist joined Monolithsoft and is basically the reason they have good character models starting with Xenoblade 2...

I'm surprised the old Sonic games (especially Adventure 1&2 and Heroes) never made their way on Switch. Then again, Sega support on the Nintendo console has been rather lackluster.

If all the games are released on both PC and Switch, it is likely that not only the PC but also the Switch will steal that share from the PS.

There is the hybrid form factor to take account too. Sure, the Steam Deck can somewhat emulate that feature but it certainly cannot in the middle of a game (I can speak from personal experience) and it remains an expensive gadget (especially on the JP side from what I've seen although retail stores, such as Edion, do stock them by comparison) specifically built around the Steam storefront.

Japanese third-parties being more and more multi-platform definitely hurt more the Playstation's market.
Not to mention I've seen recent releases even skipping PS altogether, such as ADV games (Amakano, Akai Ito, Aoi Shiro, Fate/Stay Night and Prototype-published titles), Touhou fangames and Goblin Slayer. All of this which would have been unthinkable half a decade ago.

But iirc Reco Love absolutely cratered,
I remember it was divided into two separate cartridges with their own heroine and contents (in a Pokemon-style way) alongside of a massive amount of DLCs (we're talking about a total expense of over 400 dollars/euros) so the sales weren't too surprising on that context.

1. You can't resell the games you buy for the low-spec PC anymore (this is true of all consoles right now)
2. You can't comfortably take out a low-spec PC on a commuter train to play a game

It's not necessarily going to drive sales of hardware, but if someone's already got one, it's a "yes, and" proposition. Example: "Yes, I bought a Switch 2 for the newest Nintendo software... AND now I can buy these other games for the device that lets me play them in more places."

To be fair, sony situation is more about correcting i guess (and ok, a share dose of "profits are bad"). They probably got a decent surge when they announced 25m, so now they are just correcting to what it should have been if they said 19-20m from the start.

One plus for Nintendo if they don't fumble too much again is that Switch 2 won't be hacked and emulated year 1, that means that this time around the only real way to play Nintendo exclusives for years to come will be to buy a Switch 2, which of course will be the real driver of Switch 2 sales, not the third party games that will be totally multiplatform.
