A $500 Switch 2 would be DOA. That's the same price as the disc PS5 and Xbox Series X and significantly more than the Series S. Even worse in other regions. We just saw recently how PS5 sales nosedived in Japan when it went up to 80,000 Yen.

If that's the plan Nintendo have lost the plot.

EDIT: Forgot to add that would be significantly higher than the Steam Deck when performance is meant to be in the same ballpark.
Its not really the same market. Xbox doesnt matter anyway. SteamDeck even less so.

Do you think the PS6 will cost 500 or less with the way Sony janks up the prices with only the US having the best deal with 700 Pro without disc drive?

And yes setting higher price points in the midst of an generation without reason will lead to failure.

There's a reason Nintendo aims at price stability, introduces new products for cheaper and higher prices. Its a lesson Sony never understood.

Edit: Something to clear up: i dont believe Nintendo will give up the 400 range. I just believe it wont be the SKU we are seeing at launch, as Switch is still on the market for at least 1-2 years and Nintendo aims at price stability.

PS6 might not cost $500 or less but the PS5 does and that's what the new Nintendo console will be getting compared to for at least the first four years of its life.

Even if you say those other consoles don't matter it's about the value proposition and a $500/£500/€500/80000Y Switch 2 is a terrible value proposition.

One of the only times Furukawa has talked about pricing in the last few years was to express the importance of not pricing the audience out of the console. I'd be surprised if they went with a price that has proven to be a massive barrier to their most direct competitor who was already pricing stuff higher than Nintendo ever has.

$400 feels like the upper limit for a mass market portable with maybe a $450 mid-gen refresh. This is also kind of betting on the idea that the PS5 and Series X won’t get permanent price cuts down to 350-400 soon.

Better holidays than last year could be coming.

Even if it would have many reasons behind, a 450+ console would struggle outside Japan imho

Something like the 3DS price positioning mistake that lead the decrease from 150mil to 75mil

Let's see how they will manage all aspects
3DS decrease from NDS was not just price.

After the price drop, 3DS recovery from it's bad launch was fast.
As December 2011 they were 15M 3DS shipped, same as Switch as December 2017.

However it's better for Nintendo to build Switch for a Price of $400 than for for $500 and then being forced to cut the price by 1/3 in order for it to take off.

After all the 3DS price issue was the main behind the loss from FY 2011/12 to FY 2013/14.

Without the 3DS price issue, loss from that period would have been way lower.

As edited i dont believe they will give up that price range entirely. Just cashing in on the initital pricepoint setting higher than Switch OLED and setting the new bar for SKUs. I could very well see 450 as a reasonable starting point.

With N20XX Lite replacing Switch OLED down the line for the 300+ range.

Im not sure we can really judge value propositions for an non existing product yet. Especially when the market has an 120k yen PS5 without disc drive. The value proposition will be the Switch first which still costs 300+ and for all we know the N20XX will provide an better value than that till it phases out.

Bit off topic but has anyone noticed that Game Data Library has listed the PS5 version of Romancing Saga 2 at 5,437,324 copies sold? That must be some sort of error

The form factor is like the one thing we have semi-reliable leaks on. It's a Switch but slightly bigger by all accounts.

PS5 is the high water mark at that price point and it's undeniably had price as a big barrier, as we've with it slowing once the shortages were solved post-Covid.

The 120k yen PS5 is doing numbers that would be considered an unmitigated disaster for Nintendo.

Going super high because Switch will still be on the market is kind of what happened with the PS3 and PS2 and that was an absolute low point for Sony.

When price for Switch was revealed it was considered from many DOA comparing it to the price of PS4 and XB1 and how 3DS struggled at even lower price.

Software and what Nintendo can provide will be again the biggest factor though I don't believe they'll put themselves out of younger ages going at massive increase over Switch.

I think we can't look at PS for Nintendo pricing, PS does have a larger core of people that will buy any console Sony releases, they don't have the same fluctuation in console sales as Nintendo, which shows that Nintendo really can't take Switch user base size for granted by any means when it comes to a new console.

I think both Nintendo and Sony did the transitions from NDS -> 3DS and PS2 -> PS3 dirty.

Both didnt seem to offer enough with bad launch lineups. Or introducing expensive gimmicks that dont really attract like 3D or bluray (at least for the beginning, Sony was too early there to invoke the same cheap DVD player vibes at launch at that price point).

We dont really know what the Switch -> N20XX transition will look like. But we can at least expect a better launch lineup given how long its cooking with no release date on the horizon and the Switch majorly outselling the NDS in its 8th year.

We know that Switch Pro/2 is ready to launch according to reliable sources and leaks every year since 2020.

A $500 Switch 2 would be DOA. That's the same price as the disc PS5 and Xbox Series X and significantly more than the Series S. Even worse in other regions. We just saw recently how PS5 sales nosedived in Japan when it went up to 80,000 Yen.
To be fair, that was exactly the same argument for the Switch: DOA since it was the same price as the PS4 and the One S.

Wellll, that prediction didn't really pan out 😜

Edit: damn, ninja'd by Chris.

Same price as the record breaking PS4 that had seen a massive price drop from its original pricepoint a few months before Switch was releasing

vs

Same price as the PS5 which has massively slowed down outside of the US due to the high price, a price which has only gone up since launch

They're actually not the same scenario.

Yeah its ridiculous. And the best thing about this is Nintendo could still troll once again everybody. By just doing a press release officially regarding the N20XX in march to launch within FY2025/26. They technically only promised that. No fancy teaser or really reveal anything so we could still end up clueless about it in april even if they wanted to and care only to stall impatient investors.

You could say that competition was fiercer back then and Switch had 0 library and almost no support until 2019.

The point is moot, Switch 2 won't be 500$. Nintendo needs to be in a position to offer a 300$ (max) SKU in a few years, for AC and/or Pokémon. 200$ worth of savings is too hard to reach.

They know their market and won't outprice it, especially it they go the expect next-gen only route for EDP games.

Nintendo is not Sony and they won't become Sony.
While thats true. They are still in the same industry. Thats why the 70 price pont for games settles in. Even BotW and Smash costed 70 on europe since the beginning. Despite 3DS games being 40ish.

If Sony doesnt want to compete neither does Nintendo. So both raise the prices. Competition is what lowers prices. And thats currently lacking a bit to say the least, especially in Japan.

Games' prices have fluctuated so many times in the past, there's not really a set number.

Plus, we are in a Japanese thread. Take a look at the top 30 and the prices shown in the chart. There's no consensus and each game can have a different optimal price.
Thats true and i kinda like that better even if its sometimes more expensive than the general 60/70 mark. Not counting the weak yen currently.

I do wonder on that note, but wasnt ScaVi more expensive than SwiSh in Japan or were they same priced?

Still the Switch also raised the price expectations we had from NDS and 3DS. Even if its a different ballpark as a hybrid, so we ended up comparing it to console prices. While the Lite is still on that NDS/3DS ballpark with Pkmn. We can still guess majority of Pkmn buyers still bought a Switch, Switch OLED rather than a Lite with an NSO sub. Adapting higher price expectations. And ScaVi still ended up as the best selling pkmn game ever.

Im not sure why people are so against the idea that Nintendo will also support the switch for a few more years as a low entry point into the eco system. With backwards compatbility being confirmed there’s no reason for them to throw an install base of 150m users in the trash

If I remember correctly Nintendo only said the the successor will be addressed and nothing more

Nintendo tweeted this:

We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year.

If we are being literal, the recent

At today's Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Switch Online will be available on the successor to Nintendo Switch as well.

Is already "an announcement".

They think they will follow Sony suit and stop immediatly the production like Sony tried to push the PS5 numbers while outright killing the PS4. Which one could say worked for the first years to reach same pace as PS4 but currently seems to flatter. Also i guess Sony was just forced due to the 2020 situation, even if thats a lowly excuse imo. But this is just an excepetion rather than the norm. And could have easily backfired if MS was smarter to launch in that dead PS4 timeframe rather than their follow the leader tactic which backfired as usual because they lacked compelling exclusives.

The thing is, Switch still outsells the PS4 in its last years. And Nintendo has very likely just the better exclusives to capture the audience to jump faster on the newer train. Even if some software like MP4 ends up crossplattform too.

So the Switch could be lite for the N20XX for its first year or two. Which helps keeping both prices stable (therefore N20XX more expensive) unless Nintendo somehow manages to flail so Switch canabilizes N20XX sales. So its kinda flawed even if legit concern. Its why some still think the 160mio wont be reached even if its given at this point. Depending on what Nintendo does and how they handle the transition in the end.

Is already "an announcement".

In the same Six Months Financial Results Briefing / Corporate Management Policy Briefing, we have the slide stating the following (page 48)

We have communicated that we plan on making an announcement regarding the successor to Nintendo Switch during this fiscal year. We believe that it is important for Nintendo's future to make use of Nintendo Account and carry over the good relationship that we have built with the over 100 million annual playing users on Nintendo Switch to its successor.
• Thus, we will make Nintendo Switch Online, a service based on Nintendo Account, available on the successor to Nintendo Switch.

The fact that, in the same slide, they say "we have communicated that we plan on making an announcement" alongside revealing the availability of the NSO on the successor implies that this isn't the "announcement" they were referring to back in May. Neither is the Nintendo Switch Online. The same goes for the Switch 1 games compatibility information in page 49.

Furthermore, Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch.
• In addition to being able to play Nintendo Switch software they currently own, consumers will be able to choose their next purchase from a broad selection of titles released for Nintendo Switch.
• Further information about the successor to Nintendo Switch, including its compatibility with Nintendo Switch I explained today, will be announced at a later date.

If that weren't the case, they would've used an expression such as "we communicated that we planned on making an announcement, and that announcement is that..." or something along those lines.

This is so disengious, PS5 would have kicked PS4's teeth in if it wasn't for a pandemic hampering it but you completely through that out because it didn't fit your agenda. The point stands, Switch 2 at $500 isn't DOA. That was way too dramatic, sale far less than Switch yes but WiiU level failure ain't happening as long as Nintendo delivers on the software. The software is why Switch at $300 wasn't DOA and instead is preparing to snatch the crown. You genuinely believe millions of consumers wouldn't still bite at a $500 platform that exclusively plays Nintendo's entire arsenal of games? Come on now, DOA was too much.

Yeah but also they wouldnt have done that eitherway. They want to keep investors happy for rest of an weaker FY. So its still just stalling tactics that could still end up with an paper in march saying "The N20XX will release in the following FY2025/26 with more information to come.".

That announcement wasnt even technically new regarding the compatibility. Just an official following breadcrumb to their 2022 announcement how NSO will build up value for the N20XX on what they offered on Switch over its lifetime to raise up subs.

It's not a perfect 1:1 comparison since it also had a very weak launch lineup (an issue that I expect Nintendo to avoid for the Switch successor), but the 3DS's price was a big issue at launch and it had to be lowered immediately.

A $500 Switch 2 won't be DOA but it would sell significantly fewer than the original Switch, which would still be really bad.

In other news, D3 finally announced a 4th entry in the "SIMPLE Series for Nintendo Switch" line of games; a new 4-in-1 Escape Room collection by Intense!

(also it's getting a Steam release a couple months later, huh)

The one we got on Switch already were the two Wii U ones combined into one (called Escape Trick instead), so I think these are the first all-new Escape Room game(s) since?

Shame they took a whole year and a half since the 3rd one; THE Bass Fishing which was by Reel Fishing dev Tachyon. IMO they legit cooked (on a stick by a campfire) with this one. It's not a super big deal, but it does a good job filling in that Sega Bass Fishing hole left in my poor heart that not even SIMS' Legendary Fishing with Ubisoft even attempted to fill (seriously, the fuck did they do to the reeling gameplay in that?!).

What I want to see is D3 go back to Tamsoft and have them pump out some ports/remakes/original SIMPLE Series games for Switch as Tamsoft did like dozens on PS2 alone. A number of which they themselves brought over to the 3DS, like that Crazy Taxi clone IIRC. None ever made it outside Japan on 3DS sadly. :'(

Or at least go to Cosmo Machia and have them port that 2-in-1 Shenryu shmup collection they did on PS2. I mean the 3D one ran at 30fps for Pete sake! :P A proper remaster of both ala like Triggerheart Excelica or something would be a dandy addition to Switch's fantastic shmup library.

...Or at least fucking do a remaster of Dragon Blade Wrath of Fire from Wii for Switch (with refined motion controls as an option), that was a surprisingly decent game by Panzer Dragoon vets-formed Land Ho!

In other news as well; I was right! Nippon Columbia's Bang Bang Bandits for Switch IS by sAs, the dev behind Spooky Spirit Shooting Gallery. I knew it looked like it was built on the same engine and such.

Oh if I didn't mention it; D3's new Debut Project: Cooking Cafe for Switch is by GrooveBoxJapan.

And that concludes my Switch JP gaming updates for now. :P

Why giving the game in bundles would damage the franchise?

I dont get T-Bone lol

I was mostly joking, meant as a sour joke that FF sells only if bundled but there are only a few instances where a game only sells thru bundling and it’s total number Is nothing big.

Nintendo is the third most sought after employer in Japan, n1 in entertainment

Automaton link (for english)

The work and care for their homeland pays dividends... build it and they shall come
There are a few interesting companies in the list.

Numerical order:

Nintendo moved up from 4 to 3
Bandai moved up from 15 to 12
Konami moved up from 41 to 26
BNE moved down from 33 to 34
Sega moved up from 39 to 38
Capcom moved up from 70 to 47

Sony Group is listed too but under electrical and precision equipment, which would be Sony proper who does stuff like cameras, audio devices and equipment, TVs, stuff like that. They moved down from 16 to 30.

Sony Music is at 14 too. Seems like SIE didn't make top 50 or else maybe it's only Japan based/headquarted companies.

I think this goes both ways. We saw that post-pandemic when shortages cleared up the momentum took a pretty substantial dive. It's still selling very well but it's not anywhere close to the pace people expected when shortages were ongoing. The pandemic wasn't a purely negative effect on the PS5's sales.

Nintendo can't rely on other publishers to make a case for their new platform for them. Nintendo software is the biggest driver for Nintendo hardware and their biggest games release once a generation and sell throughout the entirety of it. The Nintendo audience is also quite obviously less bothered about performance/graphics.

Switch will be kept around but Nintendo are not going to have their major games be cross-gen for 2-3 years like Sony/Microsoft did. It would be sacrificing the health of their new platform for short term gain.

Nintendo also can afford to jump ship faster because they make evergreens. They are not really "missing sales" by releasing a Switch 2 exclusive, they are "delaying sales".

I don't think it really matters what Nintendo wants, PS4 continued to live because third parties continued to release games for it. That won't happen to the same extent for the Switch, i mean a lot of companies like Atlus have already stopped releasing their games on Switch, and that is when the Switch is still the primary Nintendo console. So i don't see a reality where these companies would port games to Switch in 4 years time like they do to PS4 now.

Switch is still supported plentifully by Japanese third-parties, just not on the largest projects from the big publishers that (may) require a higher hardware power.
Like I still expect the other Yakuza games (minus the ones running on Dragon Engine such as 6 or Kiwami 2) to be ported next year on Switch 1 for instance, and maybe Vanillaware porting their older titles too. For studios like Aquaplus, Nihon Falcom and Ryu ga Gotoku which were fairly late into the party, releasing games on Switch 1 in the next few years is also a good opportunity to continue growing an userbase on both consoles. Two birds in one rock.

Visual novels, Japanese indies and games from smaller publishers (on lower graphic fidelity) also don't exactly need to focus exclusively on Switch 2 either.

I think what Nintendo wants really matter because their first party games are what drive their hardware, and in that sense it remains to be seen what their crossgen plans are.

The third party situation is certaintly more dicey, but theres no reason for old remasters/ports that are technically feasible to stop coming to the switch, plus 2d hd games and whatnot. Nintendo might also help fund some exclusive minor stuff like they are doing with western publishers, with the mysims games and other "forgotten" games

Atlus is the best example you could have come up if their lousy Soul Hackers 2 already skipped Switch? They were never supporting it in first place rather than stopping.

And how did the PS4 actually live on if Sony killed it early in 2020 already way ahead of the PS5. The support lived on and continues to live on in 2026 if Level 5 doesnt cancel their games for it, but the platform was and is dead due to Sony killing it. Im not even sure if they are that happy about it, even if they are still making money out of it and they can still be played on the PS5.

Nintendo would actually be really happy if the Switch 2 gets that support likely better support besides the usual ones faster so the 150+mio is more likely to migrate to its newer system while evergreens and smaller titles still carry some Switch sales.

Games should cost only 60. So will Pokemon Gen 10 be priced at 60?

That ship has sailed with TOTK costing $70. I expect all Switch 2 first party games to cost $70, except for the rare budget release.

That post doesn't make any sense, Sony themselves continued supporting and releasing games for PS4 until very recently. The hardware situation was mostly due to a severe semiconductor shortage from 2020 to 2023, so Sony made what was possible to make at that time.

I expect that too, which was the point of the post about prices we are used to. BotW and Smash already costed 70 on release in europe.

Does it really matter if the hardware was killed due to the shortages? The point is the system was sacrificed by Sony so the PS5 wouldnt be negatively impacted.

True about Sony's own support for the system though.
