I didn't followed it. What did they say?
Thanks @askatmat for the translations
  1. Japan love F2P, they play more than any other region-data for the month of June ‘22 only: 1st in F2P spending
  2. Japan has the highest Physical Sales (PS4+PS5), 3rd for digital full games (digital sales still higher than physical sales). That chart labels them as Physical only & digital only omitting anything in between.
  3. PS5 user spend more in PS Store than PS4 user: 2nd in overall, 2nd in Add-On (spend per active device > than any region)
  4. Japan played the least average number of titles than any other region. US Played the most average number of titles.
  5. Average Playtime per title in japan is more than double than any other region (include F2P).
  6. JP plays the most per region on game catalogue
The data is very incomplete because obviously & Sony’s charts are not entirely labeled to provide in depth information

I understand that, but Nintendo should work to have more content available day 1. Mario Golf came out with with fewer modes than its predecessors. I haven't played Strikers, but the sentiment was similar.
Games like Mario Golf need to utilize their resources well & probably need a slight increase in resource allocated

Pikmin is now kirby level in japan... Maybe we can have more figures of characters, a line with all the pikmin like the puttito brand and a Oatchi amiibo in the future

I guess this is going to happen every time.

Some poster says “wow, ps5 still selling really good this year in Japan!”

Someone else goes “does it really matter if no one is going to buy games for it and engage with it?”

And then posters fight with each other about digital sales and export theories. Can’t wait till next week!

You are both missing the forest for the tree, Nintendo won't and can't extend support for most of these games after a year because, contrary to other GaaS games, they don't monetize those games.

After a point, it is way more interesting to put these ressources into another project.

Personally, I am glad they are going that way rather than having MTX-filled games that hogs all their internal ressources.
Thanks for the replies all around. I understand why they do it, and also get that they can't endlessly support these games, but it seems this generation more than before, these are features that used to be in base versions of some of these games (the sports in particular) that are now dribbled over a financial period. It all feels a bit artificial.

I don't want all these games to go hard GAAS either, but I wouldn't mind if they monetized some of these "super evergreens", like new horizons, and kept it going.

Nintendo doesn’t really have the resources to support their long term titles like some would hope. The increase in workforce along with some personnel shuffle could hopefully help games like the Mario Sports series achieve better content saturation both base & post. I doubt Nintendo ever really goes full MTX in non-mobile titles, but something like xpacs or passes are more in their wheel house.

It seems certain

It is not certain.

This is a data driven discussion board, I have no issue with people trying to interpret the data as they will (and PS5 being exported is one of the likelier explanations, for what it's worth), but we shouldn't take or state it as unquestioned fact or orthodoxy either. PS5 may be exported out of the country en masse, which explains the poor software sales. Or it may actually have poor software sales, which F2P games, digital games, and used games would somewhat account for. Or it could be something else entirely.

We don't know, we should stop pretending like our guesses are anything more than that. Even if they are educated guesses, they re not fact.
Exporting didn’t explain the low software sales. It’s the other way around. The low software sales and tie ratio comparisons to other recent systems tell us what the maximum (or minimum) could be. From there we can extrapolate that at least half of an any given week’s hardware isn’t actually being used or hardcore PS gamers suddenly stopped buying games.

The end destination or use case doesn’t ultimately matter, even to this forum. Because unless Sony decides to invest in Japan again, these mismatching numbers won’t improve or approach normalcy. Especially with the weak yen.

Edit: this was dumb

Again, I don't want to be banned for this post, so I'll edit it if the mods demand it.

Pikmin vs Kirby
2023-08-10-21-29-13.jpg
Is this the last time we see the DS with over 10k weekly sales? Basically all sales from the switch from here on are going to chip away the DS record..

I wonder if Nintendo would still go for a new Switch in 2024 if they knew the sort of operating income and software sales they still can get out of the Switch in 2023, if they knew this 2-3 years ago.

If they focused their dev teams on the Switch and built a new Animal Crossing, 3D Mario, and Mario Kart, the Switch could have a considerably higher goal than 15 million during this year.

I guess this is going to happen every time.

Some poster says “wow, ps5 still selling really good this year in Japan!”

Someone else goes “does it really matter if no one is going to buy games for it and engage with it?”

And then posters fight with each other about digital sales and export theories. Can’t wait till next week!
yeah pretty much this lol. I think we should move on and focus on the data we can see. Switch is selling well both hardware and sw. PS5 is doing decently with HW but not software.

A couple of thoughts.

It makes sense importing a product from a market where such product is available to a market where supply is much more constrained. So, a few months ago, people/resellers buying PS5s from Japan to sell them in other countries were supply was non-existent could explain high hardware sales and low software sales in Japan. However, it seems a much less convincing explanation when products are much more readily available in virtually all countries and the exchange rate would allow to save only a few bucks (a saving which would vanish as you then need to cover transportation costs).

Also, I find it funny when used games are thrown in the bunch of explanations for low software sales. If retail sales are low there are less used games to begin with. Games are not selling at retail, period.

Yes, thank you. This was literally all I was saying initially. Not sure how it got to where we are now.

I still disagree that despite not having hard numbers, the export shouldn't be discarded from the discussion (which is what you were pushing for before Chris acknowledged we don't know the extent of the exports). We already have photographic evidence that persons are purchasing PS5s en mass and was said to be exporting them. We know it happens and you can use other numbers to determine its influence.

The whole point of data analysis is that not only are you able to look into the future and make predictions but you can explain the past and deduce points that aren't explicitly made clear.

If tourists are buying Switches and games with those Switches I don't think it really even matters where the person buying them is from at that point? So why see those sales as unnatural?

I agree that that scenario and a machine being exported is different since clearly no games are being bought with those PS5s in Japan.

With last week's financial report from Nintendo the Switch is only 2.2 million shipments behind Nintendo DS.

Top 25 best selling platforms in Japan

AyIkcb6.png

People laughed at my 40mil prediction years ago 😭

It's incredible having the PS5 over 50k for another week. A baseline around 40k would be impressive by itself. Wonder when stock will dry out before the slim.

"They're all playing Genshin"

But seriously. Not a single million seller in their software library. Historic lows for popular 3rd party franchises like Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, etc.

At least NSW has the software sales to back up the hardware records(about to topple the DS in Japan). The best selling game in Japanese history is a Switch game(took down gameboy Pokemon from it's throne)and by the time the NSW is done, the top three will all be Switch titles.

Try top 5 of all time will be on nsw in Japan. Possibly top 6

Yes, NDS won’t be selling over 10k ever again.

Wow

Now, even taking into account a.sudden drop of the Switch by both Nintendo and the market, it would indeed weird for the Switch not surpassing the DS, looking at

Actual hardware sales
Software support already announced
Switch 2 possible reveal and release pipeline

Switch OLED currently costs about $260 (-90) in Japan right now, $207 (-83) for standard, lite about $140 (-60), so I do think there is some merit to the export theory (though nowhere near as much as PS5).

For reference a disc PS5 in Japan is currently about $380 (-120) and a digital is about $311 (-89). So even with overseas shipping, you can sell a bit under MSRP and still make a decent profit.

And again, this has all been going on for at least a year, so it makes sense why we’ve still never seen “normal” PS5 hardware sales and NSW seem a tad “too good” at this stage in its life (also why only Japan was up close to %67 quarter over quarter).

Too bad this year I had to skip my trip to Japan!
If the Yen stays the same, and if the sale of Drake is authorized in Japan to the non-Japanese... then it would make sense to time a trip there with the console release, assuming you buy accessories/games/goodies there as well to further amortize your plane ticket.

Pikmin 4 is doing even better than Kirby ATFL. Amazing.

Well, the following is purely speculative since, as discussed in detail here, we don't have any definitive answers about exports. But if exports are a relevant factor due to the weak yen, it only makes sense that the higher the price of the item, the larger the benefit of reselling it abroad. Thus, the proportion of exported PS5 (out of the total number of PS5 sold in Japan) would be higher than the equivalent for Switch. It would be more or less analogous to the situation with digital ratios for Switch voucher games, where the higher the price, the higher the savings (and consequently, the digital ratio too).
You seem to be saying that most of the extra Switches sold during this week and other 80k+ weeks are staying in Japan. This makes sense, except there is the other puzzling thing which is that the hardware sales boost for Switch doesn't seem linked to major software releases. There were plenty of 80k+ hardware weeks long after TOTK was selling anywhere near that in weekly software. Also, this latest week's NSW sales are better than the previous two weeks which were the first two weeks of Pikmin 4's release.

I know there is a holiday approaching. That is something this time. But for the past several months NSW hardware sales haven't correlated with major releases. Instead hardware sales correlate more with the sales of evergreen titles.

I can. Guarantee you this wont be the case next week at all

I used to trip to Tokyo for business 1 time a year since 2017 (apart from a couple of years of pause due to COVID) and I’ve always bought videogame related hardware and software (even if Hong Kong was way more convenient)

You know, I just thought of something concerning PS5 hardware VS software. We have access to tons of data, and its archived here. Why not use that to our advantage?

Thanks to the wonderful charts, and companion charts posted here each week(thanks again to all those who produce them, they are amazing), we have data from every single week, for PS5 hardware sales.

I can't do it, but I'm sure someone here can;

Can we compare last years PS5 hardware sales VS software sales, directly against this years hardware sales VS software sales, and compare percentage of PS5's sold with software for each year?

15,000 PS5 sold in a week with 7,000 pieces of software previously, is now 50,000 PS5 sold in a week with 7,000 pieces of software. Percentages will be available for both.

We could then directly compare, and perhaps extrapolate software buying habits, and then presume how many consoles are going overseas now, VS then, due to percentages.

Just a thought!

With Switch version existing this time and splitting even more sales it becomes more difficult for any version of Neptunia to enter top 10. 3 more weeks of Switch sweep at software until Armored Core are most likely coming.

I think the idea that's being presented is that they're buying used PS4 games to play on their PS5

What you're referring to is the tie ratio of a system- basically the SW:HW ratio- and it's something I've gone and calculated for the PS5 and matched it up against both the PS4 & NSW for comparison. I've linked my post below that also contains some analysis and theorizing.

edit: I'm currently in the process of adding the PS Vita and intend to give monthly updates- so August 25th.

edit 2: TLDR- PS5's tie ratio is less than a third of both the PS4's and NSW's. So you'd need to eliminate about 2/3 of the HW sold in Japan to have it be comparable to the other recent systems (so a "true" install base of about 1.365 million, putting it about half the Vita's launch aligned). You might say that the PS5 isn't a healthy console, but neither was the PS4. The next best comp would be the Vita and I hope to have that done by the 25th. So we'll see how the Vita's TR compares to the PS5.

I wonder if the new Genshin version update will boost ps5 sales.

Other than Genshin and apex and star rail when that comes to PlayStation (is it out already?)what are some other popular f2p console titles in japan?

well, i mean, at least people cant say japanese have some inherent bias against stationary consoles, since the ps5 is selling really well :p

The Neptunia Switch ports are a tad rough

- Long load times into dungeons

- Battles now load into separate "arenas" (ala Tales of) instead of fighting relative in the area you were in (This is also on Sisters vs Sisters Switch which did not happen in the PS version)

Whatever works. If only more devs were willing to make changes like this, like they used to in the PSP days...Thankfully Switch 2 will be out next year, so comparable ports should be easier for them.

I appreciate your response, but I meant comparing it directly for each PS5 year, not against other consoles, so perhaps we compare how many game sold when it was selling 15,000 consoles, VS now, so perhaps we can extrapolate how many consoles are going overseas.

I guess the tie ratio for each PS5 year would also help.

Pikmin 4 is hanging in there with a respectably steady pace.

In fact, the week-to-week drop off becomes more impressive when considering the proportion of copies sold relative to the trend for the previous entry's Switch release. Pikmin 4 dropped off 11% more than Pikmin 3 Deluxe on week 2, but the greater volume means that it still sells a bit under double the amount of units. Week 3 features a notably smaller drop off of 32% for Pikmin 4 compared to Pikmin 3 Deluxe's 54% drop: that's a 22% better sales pace for Pikmin 4 over 3 Deluxe with over double the number of copies sold.

If digital sales are similar in proportion to how they were before, Pikmin 4 continues to look incredibly healthy and like a big step forward for the franchise in Japan. That alongside the game having had a 45% better launch period in the UK compared to its predecessor makes for a pretty positive picture despite the lack of broader data. I suppose the next big -albeit vague- global physical indicators we can hope for in the wait for the next quarterly report will be the Circana and GSD July charts to get a picture of the US and Europe respectively.

They said that in terms of gameplay and PSplus involvement, Japan is among the top regions in the world
I'm assuming you're referring to this, but this was a per person metric and cannot be used to determine the non-PS+ userbase engagement.
You’re all arguing about worthless things when I’m only focused on the real questions.

Who is selling over 50 brand new 3DSes?
I've recently started playing my 3DS and going through my old backlog, so probably people like me but whose 3DSs stopped working.

I was wondering what was going on. This is damn peculiar for the Switch to still be shooting up like this in the absence of other more immediately obvious factors. It was averaging around 54-55k in the 14-week period from mid-January to the week before the LE TOTK OLED, then there was the boost from that SKU (but no obvious addition bump from TOTK itself). Then OLED sales started trending down, but there was an anomalous multi-week growth in OG & Lite sales that offset those declines. Weeks 27 & 28 looked to be the start of a return to the previous baseline, because at this point the TOTK OLED has go to be hard to find (no LE SKU has driven sales increases for that long). Pikmin 4 was released in week 29 and appears to have caused a small bump (most of the growth that week was the OG model, though; it was up 48% compared to 14% for the Lite and 0.9% for the OLED), but that game, like every other game in the weeks after release, is now way down (-80.4% from release week), and there were no other notable releases since, so it's clearly not software driving the growth over the past two weeks, which was entirely from the OLED.

To put all of that in graph form:

Something was clearly driving this increase over the past two weeks, so it being due to unusual outside factors definitely helps this data make more sense. The Switch has to return to a level where it was before the TOTK OLED, and it was heading in that direction until recently, but now the timing of that is up in the air. Regardless of the factors at play, it's been a hell of a spring+summer period for the Switch in Japan.
The trend shift may be some slow-burn demand that's being met with increased stock or a slow organic follow-through on current promotional campaigns/word of mouth regarding software like Pikmin 4. As for the offset with the standard Switch and Lite, that might have been more coincidental to a larger volume of customers pursuing the lower grade options post-TotK's launch to get in on the game. I imagine there might be a chance of the numbers staying relatively high due to the recent Pokemon Direct keeping various aspects of that series on the Switch circulating through the consumer base.

Regardless, I think that -despite the occasionally less clear trends- the fact that the Switch is overwhelmingly the primary software delivery platform makes it hard to chalk up as anything generally odd or out of place. Not to discount the impressive overall pace this far into the lifespan and through that time as well.

this is more of a sign of bad porting than insufficient hardware
The longer loading times could be, but probably if they left the battles happen anywhere they couldn't get their desired performance, so they making it to sent you to a specific arena sounds like a decent solution. Of course they could've try to optimize it better, but probably the other real option was just let them run poorly. And just going from the footage shared here, it runs way better than the port of Neptunia VII.

do we know what tool set they're running on? because that smells more like either a rush job or ineffective tools, not ready for multiplatform

Another consideration, in keeping with Pokemon, is the Ash Ketchum comparison: 10 year olds when the switch came out are wrapping up secondary school now, and children too young for switch at its launch, but not too young for pokemon media, are the next generation of players now. This is a complete cycle Nintendo has built in conjunction with the pokemon company that can onboard kids as soon as they begin engaging pokemon media that never lets up. Here I am 25 years later, buying Pokemon games with my kids on Nintendo devices, just like I enjoyed when I was 11. Nintendo's other offerings serve to fill one's young adulthood until they too are purchasing Pokemon games for their kids.

Well that was what I wanted to know too. You would think that the tie ratio would increase over time and at least have an average of 1, but if it’s gotten worse if anything over the years. Theoretically, as stock improved I hoped that the baseline would approach its actual Japanese sales, but the yen actually weakened quite a bit as far back as a year ago. So even when stock improved late last year, it was still quite profitable to ship & sell overseas at a discount and make a profit.

As a result the tie ratio continues to look wonky and of anything, the tie ratio has continued to fall and reach new lows. If you want a year over year comparison, just compare the graph every 52 weeks. Since this week's top 30 isn't in yet, we'll compare last week vs the same week a year ago (week 30). The PS5 disc tie ratio for week 30 in 2022 was...0. This year's week 30 TR was 0.16.

So an improvement of about 0.16 games/system...Over 2.5 years and and with the shortages over, the tie ratio should be over 1 minimum. Even a baseline of 0.5 would be good! But of course, the weak yen makes the TR a little tough to directly compare. Which is a good thing the software always tells the truth! I shouldn't be able to quickly add up the total software in the top 30 in my head in a matter of seconds in a week where 48k disc PS5s were sold! This is Vita levels of performance.

It's true. While not necessarily explanatory of the trends Shadow of the Void was referencing, Pokemon has a brilliant set of on-boarding mechanisms that double as other profit centers for the brand. Merchandising with toys, stationary, and foods; the associated licensing that expands the market visibility in even more industries; and secondary multimedia efforts through mobile games, trading cards, film, the anime, shorts, and other series all come together to let Pokemon maintain cultural relevance through its appeal and very broad permeation in day to day life.

As you say, the old, loyal fans stick around, but those who fall off or are only around for one entry are replaced each generation by a new intake of youth that has an interest in the series. This interest makes the current Nintendo console all the more attractive as the principle avenue of getting the primary Pokemon experience- which in and of itself acts as a promotional and on-boarding mechanism due to the social elements and the current DLC model.

The prevalence of free-to-play offerings like Unite, Cafe, and Quest as well as the conventional titles mean that there's a slew of options that can easily draw in Switch buyers that will contribute to the long tails of the entries in the series. Families and users who come in for Pokemon can familiarize themselves with the rest of the first-party library, which is valuable in helping build a customer base that supports the ecosystem instead of just a single IP. This gateway draw is applicable to the other big Nintendo titles that pull large amounts people in as well.

Pokemon and similarly attractive titles really are invaluable backbones to the exceptional health of Nintendo's hardware.
