Where does the remaining 92% goes??
If the local publisher pays for license then shouldn't the get the whole profit after paying author??
Checking more things, I think I misunderstood Guilbert's tweet.
An old average split for books was:
-retailer revenue : ~36%
-local publisher revenue : 21%
-manufacturing costs : 15%
-shipping costs (and stuff like that): 12%
-"diffusion" cost (everything linked to what the publisher does to make retailers know of the product/to make them want to order the products) : 8%
-Author profit : 8%

This last category I think is what is split 50-50, but not between the local publisher and the author, but between the JP publisher and the author.
It all depends on the specificities of the contract obviously, as these are market average from like 10 years ago, but you could suppose that Oda gets 4% of every OP vols sold in France, and Shueisha gets 4% too. Glénat would get ~20-ish %.

Obviously Japanese authors cut won't be much from overseas sales. They only get 10% from Japan sales. So it makes sense for it to be lower when you add in other factors such as foreign publishers.

But I wonder if VIZ is the same as other publishers. Considering the company ownership.

VAT is also somewhere in there if one wants to know exactly what the full price he pays for his manga entails, for France that's 5.5%, Germany 7%, Netherlands 9%, 0% in UK, 4% in Spain and Italy etc.

It might be obvious for many but not necessary for everyone

'Kaguya-sama: Love is War' has reached 19 million copies in circulation(I don't know if it is official?)

It's from an official twitter account. To know whether the japanese twitter account is an official one, the tweeter's name and/or profile will have 公式 in it.

It is from the official Kaguay account so yes.

Also Aka Akasaka's other series, Oshi no Ko was confirmed to have sold 3.8 million copies across its 8 volumes.

*9 volumes
This is a circulation update, meaning it's about printed copies of the series, not sold copies. And so, it includes the first print of volume 9.

To compare, Kaguya reached 2.1 million copies in circulation with its 9th volume. Act-age, another acting focused series, reached 2 million copies in circulation with its 9th volume.
Though obviously the comparison is actually not that good since Oshi no Ko benefitted from the popularity of Akasaka and the Kaguya IP. These two series didn't have that back then.

Also just Oshi no Ko's reception in general played a role I imagine. The series has won multiple awards and been heavily praised by idols like Lisa and former members of AKB48. Simliar to how recently in Jump, Akane-Banashi got a nice boost right out of the gate due to it being praised by people like Oda and Hideaki Anno.

Thank you for making the thread! Reading and Collecting manga is the reason I started taking Japanese classes. I hope to be taking the N5 test January.

Currently reading way too many manga, but My Dress-Up Darling is my current darling, (hehe) I am glad is doing well.

Ruri Dragon Volume 1 has the best debut for a Weekly Shonen Jump manga since the release of My Hero Academia Volume 1 in 2014

SpyxFamily new volume performance is disappointing. It should have gotten over 1 million with the days it had.
It's a pretty good increase compared to the last volume, almost 200k above it. Sure with the LTDs it has it could have gone even higher, but that's far from disappointed.

MHA recovered the drop really well, Ruri had an INCREDIBLE debut, and that's while it's harmed by stock issues. Second week drop will unfortunately be pretty heavy.

Now, the big disappointment is Chainsawman. The anime boost kicking in will make the numbers look better after a few weeks, but it's considerably below 11 first week numbers, while having more days on sale. I was expecting the hiatus plus being a "part 2" harming the sales potential somewhat, but I really though the big momentum it had after ending would make it actually go up, not drop. I really wasn't the most bullish in CSM and even I am very underwhelmed.

based on LTD and anime boost it should have gotten over 1m in 6 days. Its not bad on its own but it is certainly a disappointment. This also locks it out of higher initial prints. Compare it with JJK's. Which didn't have LTD as good at the time.

MHA is pretty consistent as always.

Yeah Chainsaw man performance is absolutely horrible. lets see what the anime can do.

Getting 1 million sales is not an as easy fate as you may think. Many famous series didn't even reached to 1 million point even in their peak. JJK and one piece are the only ongoing mangas who get 1 million plus sales in first week of the release ( though new volume 20 of JJK fail to reach 1 million point). other than one piece and JJK only demon salyer and AOT in recent mangas reach 1 million point sales in first week.

One Piece and Kimetsu are way above the bar. I'm comparing Jujutsu and Spyxfamily. Jujutsu did that easily with fewer days IIRC. Spy has better backlog total sales and 6 days for its volume + season 2 first ep boost. It absolutely should have broken 1m. 773k is disappointing.

Spy sales are historic and better than JJK's. It had over 1.4m (IIRC) for its first volume before the anime. And now it has 2m for nearly every volume. So it isn't a normal manga at all.

Yeah spy family didn't sold as much as we were expecting but spy family has one of the best lags in manga industry.
Which meak it's LTD sales make look incredible.

Spy x Family has a history of losing many readers between each volumes. The anime didn't fix that.

Going in with the expectations of it selling over 1M in 6 days was setting yourself up for disappointment.

Sure, that is definitely not a "good" first week in theory, but it was more or less the expected one.

Most of the manga have very front loaded sales but spy family is one of the very few mangas which are not as much front loaded.

I don't thik we can call it losing readers.
Every older volume has around 100k more in sales than the later volume and i think it's due to the 5-6 months time between the release of volumes so after 5-6 month the new volume may reached to it's precedent point but in the same time period the sales of precedent also increases. It's numbers are like
Volume 1: 2.56 million
Volume 2: 2.43
Volume 3: 2.34
Volume 4: 2.2
Volume 5: 2.13
Volume 6: 2.05
Volume 7: 1.93
Volume 8: 1.81
Volume 9: 1.70

Why blue box drop after volume 3?
and Mashle after 8?

Why blue box drop after volume 3?
and Mashle after 8?
Blue Box is not dropping (at least not any meaningful amount), I don't see what you're seeing there?

Mashle just... reached it's peak and then stopped being able to bring a substantial amount of new readers while previous readers slowly went away. It's a normal sales trajectory, Mashle just ended up reaching it's peak sooner (imo) than it would be desirable. The anime will probably do something, but the series might very well be over by then.

I am talking about volume 3 vs 4,5 first week.
it's my fault

Oh. It's just the number of days it was on sale for the first week (6 for volume 3 and 3 for volume 4 and 5) that made it start higher, it normalizes afterwards, as you can see.

CSM also has a strong start, next week we should see the first effects of the anime

Dandadan volumes sold about 4% of their first print in one week in France.
That's bad.
Kaiju No. 8 #1 last year did 9%.
Solo Leveling #7 earlier last month did 15%.
One Piece #100 did 53% (!)

It's about the same as Shangri-la Frontier #1 (about 4k units sold for a 100k first print), and that one was universally recognised as a bomb.

My Hero Academia #34 fares better, with about 30k units combined. But that's still down from previous volumes.
#33 did 24,504 units in its first week, but without a Limited Edition.
#32 did 44,750 units in its first week, with a Limited Edition.
And, as you may know, Limited Editions greatly increase first week sales due to FOMO (and scalpers).

I did not see the source. Do you have a sales chart so far?
What do you mean?

With Ace of Diamond Act II ending in 2 chps & Tokyo Revengers ending in 5 chps, Weekly Shonen Magazine is in a tight pinch within the near future. They are banking on Blue Lock & only Shangri-la Frontier as their non-romcom series. Ippo will continue on till whenever Morikawa wants to. Edens Zero & Rangers are not doing much in terms of sales, Four Knights stagnated and still needs to wait for the anime to broadcast & Gachiakuta is still too early.

This is leaked. An official source will come on Oct 19th JST. As for a sales chart of Toman, someone probably has it.

Unless TR gets a boost if it is really ending in 5 chapters, SxF should be able to surpass it in time and get #2 spot.
Volume 30 of Toman releases on the last week of 2022.
It's not going to be easy for SxF to beat it.

Not sure why toman ending in 5 chapters would have any relevance to SxF's chances against it, which are pretty low honestly. Its backlog simply isn't strong enough.

Seems like Ruri's debut is the biggest debut week we've had in WSJ since Assassination Classroom.
3rd biggest since Oricon started. Assclass, Bakuman and then Ruri.

This does not include sequels and spinoffs like Boruto and Burn The Witch.

I've noticed a lot of One Piece early volumes ranked pretty high on shoseki. Is there a huge reprint or is shoseki low enough for OP vol 1 to be ranked in the low 200's?

Second is most likely, happened a few times lately that we got a big spike in terms of volumes ranked on a couple dailies but it didn't really reflect on the weeklies which have been going down fairly steadily after the early OPRed spike. The number of volumes ranked on the daily after that already went down big time which further corroborates it being one of those flukes. Thresholds past few weeks have been terribly low.

One Piece recent volumes have been selling not that much anymore, far from the 3.3M-3.5M that the volumes 58-63 did, Marine Ford really boosted the sales.

I would love to know how much the first volume sold by now tho

My best guess would be somewhere around 5M, give or take a bit.

It's not exactly an easy guess for a series this old, though One Piece having such a detailed history of first prints and circulation does help somewhat. By volume 48, the series had a ~2.9M average, with even recent volumes still receiving a first print 2.45M and it hitting 2.63M by volume 27. Since the first prints were already so close to the average (which isn't too surprising, since Shueisha still prints much more than necessary for One Piece), there isn't really that much wiggle room for the highest volumes to be way higher with their prints, and actual sales are probably a fair bit below those prints, too. Even optimistically, I'd be surprised if OP1 exceeded 3.5M sold by 2007 by much, if at all, even.

And from 2008 onwards, we know the volume had sold ~1.3M by the end of 2012, and likely sits somewhere around 1.6-1.7M total now. Add them up, and you get a number in the low 5M, with some potential to be lower because I do think this is a generous estimation rather than a conservative one. Consider it an upper bound of sorts.

I don't know where you get this data of yours but i think you should check you're data. According to oricon the estimations of one piece manga sales before 2008 average is 3.99791 million to be exact. And first volume had sold 5.244 million. Upto volume 80 all the volumes had sold out their first prints. Volume 80's sales numbers are 3.1501 million which is the lowest sales numbers in first 80 volumes. And these are oricon numbers, not before 2008. All the volumes above 26 had sold more than 4 million copies. All the volumes above 42 have sold more than 3.5 million copies. All the volumes above 81 had sold more than 3 million copies. All the volumes above 92 had sold more than 2.5 million copies. All the volumes upto 100th volume had sold more than 2 million copies and other three volumes will eventually reach 2 million point (latest volume 103 had sold more than 1.9 million copies and all the three volumes will reach 2 million in 3-4 months). Again this is oricon data and these are sold copies not in circulation. And if you Google one piece with oricon you will get this data.
