Damn, already megatons announced via the app. Guess that's one way to make sure people realise this is the real deal and not just some random useless app recycling old content.

When Miyamoto said that news of the switch 2 will also be on the app after the direct, it might have been a sign that they will be announcing big things on it.

But I expect good numbers from Zelda
If the movie is as good as the Mario movie, it should do well, indeed. Still a bit unsure about the live-action bit, but still keeping an open mind.

First trailer will be key. Though with a 2027 release, it's safe to assume it'll be a while before we get one (don't think filming has even started anyway).

Also, 2027... 4 years after TOTK. Wonder if they'll have another game ready by then?

On average, a 3D Zelda game is five years. The last four year cycle was WW to TP.

Seems the app will be something.

Also a good thing if they begin to turn away from twitter

by the release of the movie, I'd expect Nintendo to have talked about or even show the next Zelda. and there will definitely be spinoffs prior to keep mindshare up

Honestly sooner than expected. I had pretty much pushed the initial announcement out of my mind since I figured it was nowhere near happening but apparently we're only two years away.

Looks like they're encountering technical issues because of so many people trying to access the app.

Edit: already fixed. Still, pretty funny how a mere release date caused the servers to melt. Good test ahead of Switch 2 extravaganza next week.

Wonder how long until we get casting news. Will they drop it in a Direct again?

What a coincidence that this gets announced exactly when Ghibli becomes a big talking point online (unfortunately it's for shitty reasons), considering how many people were dreaming of a Ghibli-styled Zelda movie.
Really curious with what frequency Nintendo plans on releasing movies - Mario 2 is in spring 2026 and Zelda is a year later, but I think if there was something in 2028 we'd have already gotten a small announcement through a press release or something.

Nintendo Today getting the scoop to big news will be hilarious.
I mean, it’s not really a news app per se, it is a PR app primarily, so it’s not getting any “scoops”. It’s entirely working as intended if it publishes information first.

It’s currently #2 in the Lifestyle category of the App Store here.

I dont know how they are going to adapt Zelda visuals to a live action, without not being really weird

Well they'll need more than just Mario and Zelda to accomplish that. DK spinoff? Splatoon? Pikmin? Kirby? Who knows.
Luigi's Mansion seems like a shoe-in at this point. Would be a great Haloween movie.

Otherwise, Smash at some point but it is not easy to find IPs that would translate well to the big screen. A lot of the Nintenfo franchises would work better as TV shows (slice of life for Splatoon/Animal Crossing, anime for Fire Emblem...). I am not counting Pokémon for now.

Well that's one hell of a way to justify your app. It seems to be working considering how a mere release date for the Zelda movie crashed the servers.

The fact that this announcement exclusively came from the Nintendo Today app really hammers home the point - Nintendo has begun seeing social media itself as a middleman that they wish to cut out when delivering information. I'm honestly not sure if this app exists without Elon's shenanigans, specifically with the Twitter API that cause all the console makers to pull direct to Twitter integration from their console.

Any information that would've been a tweet will probably be a Nintendo Today drop from now on.

"This is Miyamoto."

Guess they're making a big deal of that app, heh.

This is Miyamoto. Did you have a chance to check out the short video we posted on Nintendo Today! a few hours ago? We announced that the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda, which I am producing with Avi Arad-san, will be released in theaters worldwide on March 26, 2027. On the Nintendo Today! app, we will be delivering a variety of information such as this announcement "directly" to all of you. We hope you will try it out.[2/2]

We have new information:

Shooting will start in New Zealand from Nov 25 to April 26.
According to Production List, as tracking service run by the Film & Television Industry Alliance, Zelda will shoot in New Zealand from November 2025 to April 2026.

Synopsis
‘The Legend of Zelda’ follows Link, a young warrior destined to protect the magical kingdom of Hyrule from the forces of darkness. The land is under threat from Ganon, a ruthless warlord who seeks the Triforce—an ancient relic said to grant limitless power. To stop him, Link must embark on a perilous journey, battling monstrous creatures, exploring treacherous dungeons, and solving intricate puzzles to uncover sacred artifacts that can aid him in his quest.

A movie trilogy?

Furthermore, movie industry insider Daniel Richtman has claimed that Nintendo and Sony Pictures are planning a potential movie trilogy for Zelda. According to Richtman, all major acting roles will be signed for three films planned over six years.

that synopsis is so boilerplate, there's no value to it. the closer we get to shooting, the more we'll learn about the movie. Zelda can't not have a lot of screen time in this, for example

That gives the intended release schedule for these movies.

2027: Movie 1
2030: Movie 2
2033: Movie 3
That would make sense too, because we get Sonic movies after a little over 2 years, and we are getting Mario 2 after 3 years. Would hope Zelda followups would be no longer than 3 years apart. If a trilogy is true, I would not expect this to be confirmed by Nintendo until they see how the upcoming one plays out.

Shooting in New Zealand is cool.

Probably because it's not really a synopsis, and more a description of the Zelda series 😅

I'm guessing plot isn't fully fleshed out yet.

With "a new Super Mario Bros. movie" releasing April 2026 and the rumored Donky Kong movie (assuming they aren't the same) in 2028/9, Nintendo is going to have a strong presence in the film industry if all goes well. With the success of the first Mario movie there's no doubt a Luigi's Mansion and Princess Peach spin-off are at least being considered, too.

I agree. I'd definitely expect those to fill in the gaps between potential future Zelda movies, and also a Mario Movie 3 as well.

Seems Nintendo is aiming for their movies to become the equivalent of a big game release, in annual revenue terms.

apparently some work has already been done on soundstages. given it's Sony co-producing, expect lots of unreal engine backdrops

Nice to see Kyoto there

Zelda being a trilogy filmed in New Zealand gives me a lot of Lord of the Rings vibes, hopefully Nintendo/Sony can actually pull this off.

I feel like the lord of the rings comparison is superficial. NZ has a lot of landscapes that are used as reference points for fantasy (thanks to lotr, of course) and there are good financial incentives to shoot there.

With Nintendo caring so much about having a good, unique look, they'll touch up the backdrops enough to stand out from the Tolkien movies
