• Akira Toriyama passed away

Let's all commemorate together his legendary work and his impact here

JAPAN: Nintendo software and hardware sales data from 1983 to present

It's sold over 3 million physical copies in Japan (and 600k in Spain), so it has to be over 20 million worldwide or something
I think that is fairly obvious. Probably over 30M WW. But this is just about Japan. So the question is: how high is it's digital share?

I feel like Minecraft is the kind of game that has a high digital share ratio. It feels like one of those games you are bored on a Friday and you get the itch to play it, and it just happens to be discounted on the eShop so you buy it, play it for 3 hours and never touch it again lol

Minecraft does not ever go on sale.

Guys, I'm talking about Japan only, in reference to Tbone's estimate. Why would I be talking WW in the Japanese sales thread?

Shipement for these 3 games are not in the OP:

[GMB] The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening <ADV> (Nintendo) {1993.06.06} (¥3.900) - 540.000

[NDS] Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team <RPG> (Pokemon Co.) {2005.11.17} (¥4.571) - 760.000
[GBA] Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team <RPG> (Pokemon Co.) {2005.11.17} (¥4.571) - 670.000
Pokemon games are update as of March 2007.
However I don't known when was share the Zelda LA game boy number.

Next update will also have to update 2 Wii games: Zelda Twilight princess from 570k as of March 2008 to 640k as of September 2023 and Kirby's Return to Dream Land from 670k as of March 2012 to 850k as of September 2023 in addition to Switch games.

As well as this, Minecraft launched digital-only on Switch to begin with, and only got a physical release a year later - which is going to have a marked effect on its digital ratio.

It is also a game that is gifted a lot by adults to kids, though.

There is no doubt. The Nintendo Switch will become soon the best selling console in Japan and the console with the most software sold.
But, the tie ratio from the NES/SNES is still a awesome record.

I've updated OP with data as December 2023.

NSW has broken the record for highest selling hardware sales and highest selling software sales in Japan.
NSW has become the first console with first-party million-sellers totalling over 100M units sold.

It’s true. Only one game surpass 1 million copies sold in Japan.
If the list includes some other games that sold well, but not 1 million, the ratio is gonna be bigger.

I had no idea Pokemon SV was so close to overtaking Red/Green in Japan, that's bonkers. Wonder if gen 10 will also grow from 9.

It’s so crazy how relatively huge video games are in japan, 1/10th the population has a copy of animal crossing, 1/4th a switch.

I wish we got the number total for United States nowadays

Yes, Pokemon S/V will soon become the best selling RPG of all time in Japan, record held by Pokemon R/G for decades (launched February 1996).

I didn't totally love S/V but overall I enjoyed it and it was a vast improvement from SWSH.

I'm hoping we have a four year cycle for gen 10. 2026 would be good for celebrating the franchise's 30th anniversary too.

We need gen 10 to be Legends Scarlet/violet and we have the perfect pokemon game

I just realised, when switch has stopped selling, Pokémon R/G could be pushed back to 4th on the list 🤯
4th place is the minimum, SV and MK8D are definitely selling another 200K and 300k respectively.

In CY2023, Smash sold 0.63M and Splatoon 3 sold 0.67M. The former, which is only 0.76M behind, is very likely to do it too and the later, which is 1.23M behind, isn't out of question.

So, Pokemon R/G, which was number 1 for 20~25 years, is likely going to be pushed from 1st to 5th/6th in a span of just 5 years (ACNH became first in the Jul-Sep 2022 quarter).
