It is probably far easier for Sony to have presence in smaller markets as they sell a lot more than just videogame related products. That is likely the main reason why Sony broke through in the smaller markets almost immediately with PS1 and PS2 but Nintendo needed far more time to become a bigger player in smaller markets (pretty much on NSW generation, I believe)
