On Nintendo 3DS Nintendo let a very interesting option that let you see the most downloads tittles on the digital store.

To see this ranking you need to follow that:

3DS eShop > Sereach icon > "Search according to these criteria" > "filter/classify" > "popularity"

IMG-20240803-182424.jpg

The list that you will get is order by lifetime number of downloads.

The list if different depending on the 3DS region.

Note that you can change search options to include only virtual console game instead of all software for exemple.

From the moment it's rank by "popularity" the list will be order by lifetime downloads.

How do we know it's lifetime and not recent like on Switch?
Because the recent best selling games list is different:

We can acces to it this way:

3DS eShop > "rankings" > "most popular titles currently"

IMG-20240803-231405.jpg

IMG-20240803-231435.jpg

When you do this, the console show an error message due to 3DS eShop being closed.

Note that if you select "most popular titles" instead of "most popular titles currently" you will get the exact same listing as what I got in the OP but without demos and updates.
The list will also be limited to a top 20.

The most interesting list to get is the one from the Japanese eShop as it's likely where digital sales were the most signifiant in units and thanks to Nintendo and Media Create numbers we should be able to put estimates figures on the ranking.

Nintendo also shared some retail+digital data in the US so USA list could be interesting.

For fun fact on the FR list Super Mario 3D Land is #1 when you count only paid items but when you include Demo/F2P it drop to #24.
And if you include updates items in addition to Demo/F2P it drop even more to #59

ehhh I'm not so sure of this a bunch of games in the US managed 20%+ digital on launch month

but yes it would be easier to extrapolate from

Compiled the rankings from my 3DS.
For the paid contents charts, this is just the Top 100 but I can go as far as a top 1000.
For exemple Yo Kai Watch 3 is #118 in the paid contents chart.
On the free content charts, all games are above Super Mario 3D Land in number of download.

So was that when NPD was still providing actual numbers? And where do the digital numbers come from then? Did Nintendo ever provide digital numbers like that for the launch month of a single country?

Nintendo used to do PRs timed with NPD, often giving their overall sales figures (so with digital). I'd guess these come from those?
