*Notes:
1. Total Software sales are from 2012, that means one year of sales is missing for 3DS. That’s except United Kingdom, Spain and Nordic Europe, which 2011 sales of 3DS are included.
2. Hardware 2011 for 3DS are included in all graphs.
3. Wii Total sales are estimated using last known public numbers, and adding data from 2012.
4. Japan hardware and software sales from 2011 and 2012 are shipments, no sell through.
5. A few mistakes from year 2014 were manually fixed.

Thanks for data :

Comparaison between CESA and Ludostrie numbers for France :

Hardware (France - CESA)

Switch - 1.350.000 / 4.620.000
PS4 - 310.000 / 6.320.000
PS5 - 170.000 / 170.000
3DS - 110.000 / 5.570.000
XB1 - 80.000 / 1.830.000

XB1 - 78.000 / 1.794.000
3DS - 29.000 / 5.632.000

The big difference is 3DS for 2021 sales and PS4 for LTD.
(PS4 will probably never beat Wii LTD)

LTD for 360/PS3/Wii/PSV/WiiU are very close to what was share by Nintendo France and Gameblog.fr as December 2016.

So which is more likely to be more accurate?

Thank you very much for the info! Such a good thread to bookmark.

I wish we could get some Latam info as well.

Latam, Africa, China, India, eastern EU, middle east, south east Asia --> All those territories need more visibility as well.

Great data. Thank you very much.
Can't wait to compare this with Switch (2), PS5 and Xbox Series going forward.

Any chance we can expect 2021 added soon?

Do these software sales include digital? Is the source IDG Consulting again?

IDG consulting again. They base their numbers in NPD and GSD but with some slight differences as already reported, and sometimes incongruities like Italy 2019, that was corrected this year, lowering Switch numbers.

If NPD includes digital software sales in their totals, here should be the same. Of course companies that don’t share digital (like Nintendo) aren’t included.

PS4 sw numbers for 2020 (crashing almost everywhere) don't make any sense if these include digital sales too. It was peak year for PS4 sw shipments going by sonys financials (thanks to Covid)

It's only partial digital; the DPP companies which also vary year to year. Even for PS4 that would exclude the vast majority of digital releases.

I'm trying to figure out why there is such a discrepancy in the data for UK GSD:

Thanks! Do you know if the presentation is still accessible on the web? Can't see to find it anymore.
Sadly, the video was made private, but here is the Gamesindustry.biz article that covers the relevant info:

Actually got another question:
  • The ERA 2021 report has PS4 at 7.3M and PS5 at 0.5M for 2020, physical only. Its GFK Entertainment data.
Seems unlikely this includes digital for the UK at least. For instance the PS/XB software split is 70% which is what the physical range usually is. After digital its usually 55-60%, 70% is way too high to be including digital

Great thread, thanks for the job OP.

We need this data every year more than ever since that even NPD leaks are gone.

I wish I would of saw this before I posted a certain comment lol, but looking at the Taiwan and Korea console market growth is absolutely mind blowing to me right now lol.

How did that happen?

It's absolutely great to have all this data covering the period from 2012 and having it so well presented too. Thank you so much @Hiska-kun. Personally I think it would be nice to update the top of the first post to include there the info about where the data comes from, what does it cover, etc.

Thanks for the great thread @Hiska-kun !

By now Switch's South Korea, Taiwan & China official sales are well over 5M,

For South Korea & Taiwan I know very little about the history of console sales before the Switch launched,
But from what I'm seeing I wouldn't be surprised for it to be the best selling hardware in these two countries of all time.
Same is the case for China where even official Chinese Switch sales are likely to end up over 4M when the gen is over

I believe Nico Partners also estimated Switch to have surpassed 4M

The total number of console gamers in China hit 11 million in 2019 per Nico Partners and they projected it to grow to 19.1 million in 2024. If Switch official and gray-market sales make up 60% of the console sales during this period it means that 10M would be hit in China by 2024. Overall lifetime sales of the system in China could very well be over 5%(although the vast majority of these would be units resold on the gray market from other regions).

Nintendo never had such a footprint there, and honestly Switch compliments mobile and PC gaming so well and aligns to the culture while it's games dont have huge problems with censorship and there is not much of a crackdown on the gray market. I believe the last year that no new games were certified benefited Nintendo as it scaled up the demand for the Switch on the game market, especially with New Horizon being banned and a bunch of games with Chinese language localization that never launched officially in the country both from Nintendo and third parties.

Now that they are approving games again, Switch's Chinese version might also become a hot item, there has been a bunch of games that could be brought over especially Switch Sports and Splatoon 3, most Nintendo games shouldn't have much problem launching and there is a ton of third party games that would also benefit from such a launch. No doubt the lack of games on the Chinese Switch is one of the main problems for Tencent's who are Nintendo's local partner.

In terms of SEA, places like Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines, etc it seems they are focusing on relying on Lazada and other similar partners but official support has so far been provided to Thailand & Singapore but this is another market that Nintendo is likely to continue to see growth from in the coming years.

Overall for 2022 & 2023 I expect that markets in South East Asia to be key to Switch maintaining over 20M sales if no successor is launched.

For this year Switch Sports & Splatoon 3 are the key games that will bring new audiences to the fold and catch the region by storm as I expect both to be major titles that will maintain momentum until Breath of the Wild Sequel hits. Scarlet / Violet will do huge sales WW but I don't think they are selling as much hardware as Switch Sports & Splatoon 3 in SEA region.
Two overlooked aspects of these games launching this year is that Wii was never that big in the region which limited how popular Wii Sports could become this is the case in Japan where it sold to about 1/3 of all Wii owners but this still puts it well below what Switch Sport's ceiling is.
While for Splatoon, the debut launched on the Wii U which even in Japan where it fared best was a total failure; and the sequel was very early on in the Switch life and had a late launch on many markets including South Korea. This time Splatoon 3 will be launching in all markets at the same time on a user base of around 30M+ devices across the Japan + SEA Region, I can see just the launch being above 5M and for updates to drive the top performance in December for the Switch in Japan.

Always neat to see further evidence that, when given desirable hardware, Canada is the official North American territory of Nintendoland. It's often forgotten how Canada tends to lean more (and more consistently) into Nintendo hardware than the rest of North America on a per capita basis, mostly because there's frequently little evidence to substantiate the claim (or at least not readily available to recall), but pretty sure those numbers make it clear and indisputable.
I wish I would of saw this before I posted a certain comment lol, but looking at the Taiwan and Korea console market growth is absolutely mind blowing to me right now lol.

How did that happen?
After moving things over to the Hong Kong subsidiary and everyone got their bearings, the situation on the ground wrt retail availability and translation might have improved, contrary to what one would think would happen.
And Nintendo very much wanted to be present in the South Korean market; setting up an official branch of the company there was no small investment, so it speaks to a certain commitment level they had, even if they had to scale back the workforce there by 80% in 2016 during Nintendo's lean years. I think Nintendo is likely to smartly re-invest there, if they haven't already.

One of the things that's changed is Nintendo has worked to ensure day-and-date releases in these regions alongside Japan with full localizations. And as @Nocturnal rightly points out, Switch's overall design is something that better compliments instead of competes with the existing popular gaming options like PC and mobile. At least one South Korean analyst suggests that younger South Koreans want fuller and richer experiences than what mobile offers on the go. The article also notes how the pandemic helped push this growth along substantially as PC cafes where many South Koreans enjoy richer PC game experiences were closed by quarantine orders and consoles offered something less expensive than a gaming PC.
Experts say renewed popularity in the Switch points to shifting tastes for local gamers that prefer games with high production value often found in consoles, compared with simple mobile offerings.
"Younger gamers prefer more polished games, leading to growing console users," said Wi Jong-hyun, a business professor at Chung-Ang University and president of the Korea Game Society. "The 'Animal Crossing' phenomenon showed that there is a significant number of local gamers out there who want console games."
The article also notes that a few South Korean game makers are starting to look at console releases for their traditionally PC-only games.

That all has cumulative growth effects, I'd think.
Well, and getting them up and running in SEA was one of Furukawa's first commitments when he took the presidency, so I don't expect them not to keep moving in that direction. They entered Thailand last year and seem to be beginning the process of officially entering the Philippines and Malaysia as of February. I'm betting that they'll eventually set up an official sales and translation subsidiary in Singapore some time in the future to manage their entire SEA operation.

They also just dipped their toes ever so slightly into the Middle East by partnering with Tor Gaming in Israel in 2019, which is an arrangement currently being run out of NoE, and the other region Furukawa stated he wanted Nintendo to be in.

NPD November + December 2020
PS4: ~180K
XB1: ~180K

LTD 2020
PS4: ~34.3M
XB1: ~29.0M

XB1 should end there, it wouldn't have enough to sell another 100K. PS4 probably ends at 34.5M.

NPD Lifetime Sales 2021

It would be a good idea to make a Thread with NPD Hardware data adding the monthly number (those who are public).

I’m

We have the chart above containing a lot of the market sell thru, 11mil there so it should be around 13mil-14.5mil shipped
10.681m to be precise. Given these sales I think nearly 4m more for other regions seems too a high bar.

edit: Using PS4 for the same regions we get 81.164m (on shipments of 114.190m). If we applied the same ratio to Vita we'd get 13.77m shipments, which seems reasonable but also doesn't take into account that PS4 had wider distribution than Vita. If we used Switch's ratio (63.174m on 79.87m) we'd get 13.093m for Vita.

**It seems Switch sales in Italy 2019 were greatly overestimated, and this year are giving lower numbers to compensate. In the following graph, I swapped 2019 and 2020 numbers, to make it look “normal”.

That makes sense. Literally no reason Switch should be down YOY, and yeah those 2019 sales were looking way too high for no reason.

I made a compararison between this Gen and previous :

Here is what it looks like :

USA :

PS4/XB1/WIU generation was a decline in those places compare to the previous generation even when we exclude Nintendo.
At West it was a return to PS2/XBX/GCN level.

Japan is the only place where PS3/360/WII did not see an explosion and PS4/XB1/WIU was a disaster.

3DS+PSV sold more than 30M in Japan, it's close to Swith expected lifetime sales.
3DS/PSV was a disater in US and UK.

If Switch becomes an ongoing system for many years, it will eventually outsell the DS. I still think it has a shot even if it doesn’t lol. We will see.

Switch replacing both Nintendo and Sony handheld line in Japan has been quite an interesting development when you consider is what Nintendo tried already to do with the 3DS.
