GamesIndustry year in Review

2022 has been a busy year for GamesIndustry.biz (and continues to be so. Could the news slow down please? It's nearly Christmas). Brendan has already taken an in-depth look at the biggest stories of the past twelve months in This Year In Business, but it's time to look at good ol' statistics.

Yes, it's our annual Year In Numbers infographic in which we condense everything you need to know about where the global games industry stands into a single (but very long) JPG. In the graphs and tables below you'll find:

  • The global games market value (courtesy of Newzoo)
  • Total boxed vs digital revenues (also via Newzoo)
  • The biggest mobile games, publishers and countries, both by revenue and downloads (thank you, Sensor Tower)
  • The best-selling games in the UK (from GfK), US (from The NPD Group) and Japan (from Famitsu)
  • The most covered games and companies (provided by ICO)
  • The biggest influencers, most watched trailers, most tweeted/retweeted games, and the titles with the most retail placements (courtesy of Fancensus)
  • Plus, our own tallies of the highest and lowest rated games of the year, and the number of new releases vs new IP from the biggest publishers
So, without any further ado, GamesIndustry.biz presents… The Year In Numbers 2022
$184.4 bn (-4.3% YoY)

Total Market Revenue: 5.8% Boxed vs 94.2% Digital

PC Boxed: 2% vs 98% digital

Not sure why gameindustry decided to do this without including the huge month of December...

Man, Apex mobile was a giant bomba, wasn't it?

I wonder what went wrong, when the console version was so successful right out of the gate?

I think the US chart is physical+digital (with the usual exceptions) so it's wrongly labeled in OP.

1670596502571

Also the japanese chart is suspect.
Currently, speaking of physical sales, Elden Ring for PS4 is at 10th spot however as is presented without SKUs or warning that it is SKU based it should be considered combined with the PS5 version and thus it should be placed higher (probably 7th or 8th).
The publisher for Elden Ring is also wrong (Bamco doesn't publish the game in Japan!).

Cross-posting from the UK thread:

1. FIFA 23
2. Call of Duty Modern Warfare II - 395.000
3. Pokemon Legends Arceus
4. Horizon Forbidden West
5. Pokemon Scarlet/Violet - 352.000+
6. LEGO Star Wars The Skywalker Saga
7. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
8. God of War Ragnarok - 254.000+
9. Nintendo Switch Sports
10. Elden Ring

These Horizon PS5 bundles are really helping Forbidden West.

Must be close to 10M because of that.

Sorry for the double post but it seems like they are only using Famitsu as their source so perhaps that’s it.
