Across those markets, PS5 sales are up by five times in March 2023 compared with the year before. In 2022 there had been severe stock shortages for Sony's console.

The surge in PlayStation sales offset declines elsewhere, Switch sales are down 19% across the markets compared with March 2022, while Xbox Series S and X sales are down 13%.

For the first quarter of the year, 1.5m consoles have been sold across the selected countries, which is a rise of 41% over the first quarter of last year. PS5 leads the market with a 369% year-on-year sales rise, followed by Switch (down 18%) and then Xbox Series S and X (down 10%).

For reference UK Q1:
- PS5 (+180%)
- NSW (-25%)
- XBS (-18%)

JP Q1:
- PS5 (+182%)
- NSW (-34%)
- XBS (-10%)

US Feb:
- PS5 (+300%)

Across the whole of Europe, console and PC games sales were down 11% for the first quarter of the year. But console sales were up 41%. Console success was down to PS5, with sales up 369% year-on-year. Offsetting declines from Switch (-18%) ad Xbox Series S and X (-10%)

For March, game sales were down 4%. Resident Evil 4 Remake was the best-selling game of the month. Console sales were up 67% to 570,000 units sold across selected European countries, again because of PS5.

Large software decline for Europe YOY, that has to be worrying in the face of hardware sales. Wish Dring gave figures on the overall market so we could gauge how healthy it really is.

Crazy to think where the PlayStation 5 can go if the Slim model is really real.

How much would it cost?

A PlayStation 5 Slim without a disc drive for $300 would be insanely popular.

There weren’t many high profile software releases though outside of HL and RE4R

Last year had Elden Ring, Pokemon, GT7, Horizon, Warhammer Total War 3, WWE2k22, Triangle Strategy and Kirby

By my calculations, PS5 should need around (+200%) (2M last Q4) to meet the record breaking 6M shipment. Looks within reach.

I think they leave it at $399. It's the $499 option that's always been most available.

With current sales levels Sony has no reasons to introduce a $300 model. They’ll keep any savings to themselves or to counter Nintendo’s next system.

If there's a price drop I think it will be for $350 / $450 first like the PS4

Dying Light 2 came out as well and sold 5 million in its first month. It was lowkey a pretty
goated stretch of games.

Extremely strong quarter for PS5 which definitely had ripple effects on Xbox. Declining that early in the generation is definitely not good.

Expected drop for the Switch, between the mature phase of its lifecycle and the lack of a huge seller like Legends last year. Expecting Q2 to be up YoY.

Since you are talking about price, a reminder that PS5 cost 549€/449€. Sony still have margin to go back to launch price, in order to push sales.

More likely they'll be focused on countering Microsoft. Nintendo just had their most profitable generation ever right in between what will end up being Sony's two most profitable generations. The two coexist nicely.

Microsoft on the other hand buying up entire publisher's is of far more concern despite their continued anemic hardware sales.

And the fact most PS5's have been sold for bundles around the 600/650 mark with extra controller/headset/game combos thrown in so there's still quite a large buffer to drop before they need an actual price drop. Alternatively they could drop the base price but continue with the inflated bundle's.

If demand keeps up Sony will happily hold out another 2 year's at full price. And didn't they even raise the price by 50 last year? I can see a situation where demand is almost waning to the point where a price drop would be needed then a huge title like GTA VI comes along and boosts it for another year.

It'll be this. Plus the $99 Disc add-on.

I'm more curious if Microsoft adjusts their prices in response ($399 Series X?).
I hope they are planning for a $399 Series X digital edition. But not some crap like the One SAD and PS5 where it's the same case. I want a slimmer X in a similar form factor to the S.

Maybe they name it the XS lmao. Power of the X, digital form factor of the S.

I hope but, I suspect not. It's boring but the easiest thing to do is pull out the drive and keep the form factor. Like the Xbox One S digital. That way they dont have to spend money validating a new mother board, making two production lines with different cases, etc.

A 10% decline isn’t too bad considering the cost of living crisis in Europe. Especially as it seems like the XBS did pretty well last year.

This would be VERY difficult to do I think.

Niggas really do be forgetting about Lego Star Wars... smh

It is when you're competition is seeing growth obviously exaggerated by major constraint in 2022.
However there's clearly I high demand for console yet Xbox is down even with Series S which one would think would be advantage with the cost of living crisis.
It can only be described as poor when sales are already on the decline in a console third year.

Well, i guess the hard economic times don’t effect PS5 consoles, which are the most expensive ones, just the other two.

Xbox is not particularly strong in Europe but (correct me if I’m wrong),XBS is pulling ahead of Xbox One, which means they’re heading in the right direction.

Xbox Series is lagging behind in the UK in its 1st "EU" market.

Xbox One - 2.47m
Xbox Series ~1.85m

Statista and EraLTD data at the end of 2015/2022.

XS is lagging behind X1 in US and UK since launch basically , that's for sure. I dunno is XS now ahead of X1 globally anymore because very awful holidays last year
