ELDEN RING Shadow of the Erdtree, the action-RPG by Bandai Namco Entertainment Inc. and FromSoftware, Inc., has already sold 5 million copies worldwide in just 3 days after release.

This milestone is the result of the incredible support of the fans, to whom we want to express our gratitude.

In this expansion, players will enter the Shadow Realm, a world full of mysteries, dangers and menacing bosses. Shadow of the Erdtree also adds many new spells, weapons and armor to allow players to create their favorite builds and overcome challenges. Guided by Miquella, follow in her footsteps and reveal the dark side of the ELDEN RING story.

ELDEN RING Shadow of the Erdtree is available for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC via Steam.

Stellar performance for a DLC at this price point with an entry point that's not all that accessible.

5mil is good, and shows the fanbase is there. What was Sunbreak first sales? Elden ring is double sales of MHR so could be a good comparsion

The trophies and achievements on some hard end-game stuff were completed by a lot of people on the original game, it was clear that a significant part of this player base wanted more Elden Ring. This is the validation, From Software is on top of the world.

Really impressive result, especially because the DLC has maybe not the most intuitive entry requirements and is made for players that stuck through and reached Elden Ring's endgame.

FromSoft has spent the last 15 years cultivating one of the most loyal fanbases in the industry right alongside devs like Nintendo.

that is absolutely true, simply undeniable (I this is coming from someone who can't stand the "souls-like" gameplay loop lol)

didnt even know this game was still on last gen consoles. kinda crazy.

like this is on xbox one? i think i'll go find some videos.

40 dollars

Ah ok, so same as MH Icebreak and Sunbreak?

I don’t play either of these franchises but $40 seems normal, not “surprising it sold 5 million given the price” kind of thing.

This thing released across 5 platforms, no? It seems like reasonable sales for a base game that sold as well as it did and on as many platforms as it is.

For comparison:

Monster Hunter: World - Iceborne
  • PR 09.13.19 over 2.5m
  • IR 09.30.19 2.8m
  • IR 12.31.19 3.2m
  • PR 01.13.20 over 4m (PC launch)
  • PR 03.13.20 over 5m

Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak
  • IR 06.30.22 2.5m
  • PR 07.26.22 over 3.5m
  • IR 09.30.22 4.4m
  • IR 12.31.22 4.95m
  • PR 01.18.23 over 5m

The price isn't at all meant with "entry point that's not all that accessible."
It's about the in game requirements to be able to play the DLC, those being that you have to beat an optional boss that is one of the hardest in the game.

Also it's called Iceborne.

Is it safe to say that this is the best selling expansion of all time, especially in terms of revenue?
Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is at over 12.6M sold. Sunbreak is at 7.7M. Revenue for this is of course already higher than for Sunbreak at least though.

Edit: Also I'm 100% sure that the Pokémon expansions for SwSh and SV sold more than 5M each.

Hilariously enough, running backcompat versions through the current gen consoles apparently gets you the best performance on consoles. Shadow of the Erdtree does not perform all that steadily with the PS5/Series versions.

For clarification, I meant launch-aligned.
Is it selling better than WoW expansions?
Shadowlands sold 3.7m in one day. It's probably neck and neck.

So well deserved, best DLC I’ve ever played, before this I would have said that the best DLC I ever played is Blood and Wine from Witcher 3.

The only non-MMO major DLCs ($30+) I suspect might be bigger would be the Pokémon expansions that have replaced 3rd versions.

Thinking on this more, its amazing to see how the Souls series has continued to climb from such a niche start into being such a mainstream blockbuster hit. The word of mouth and grass roots fan loyalty they built over time really bore fruit for them over the last 15 or so years.

I had such an incredible time playing through and finishing the DLC so the success is well earned. (Well, it was great other than that final boss. Seriously what were they thinking?)

This is hugely impressive and a massive success, even though i thought the DLC to be really disappointing, a bit uninspiring besides the incredible vistas (considering the reviews) and honestly just plain barren overall in terms of exploration, it's clearly a superb product in terms of production.

How many publishers would have cut their losses after Demon Souls slower start?

Really shows how time, passion, and a clear vision can be rewarded after years.

Congrats to From as this is no lightning in a bottle success, but the pinacle of a decade+ work.

The publisher of Demon's Souls literally did, even internationally on the game, only to their detriment imo. From Software staying the course and Bandai fully supporting Miyazaki's vision was itself a franchise rescue and both were handsomely rewarded for it.

Well to be fair their first publisher did cut their losses and lived to regret it lol
